Gliders On The Storm

Planes without engines soar under the cerulean expanse and o’er the rocky desert of Moriarty. It’s not magic, or so says Rick Kohler, a glider pilot with over 7,500 hours in the cockpit.

by Chris Quintana Daily Lobo Mike Mares sings and plays acoustic guitar for local group The Noms. The eight-month-old band is recording an album and plays a self-described “acoustic pop” that led to victory in UNM’s last Battle of the Bands. Daily Lobo: So what are you doing today? Mike Mares: Today we just had a little writing retreat and practice and hanging out and eating burritos.

The Rosie Ledet Review

Zydeco princess Rosie Ledet is the saucy sassy Screamin’ Jay Hawkins of swamp dancing. The rural Louisiana native played with her backing band The Zydeco Playboys at the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s Pub and Grill on Wednesday, a minute’s drive from the Rail Runner’s #599 first stop in Santa Fe.

Eco-Reps to lead campus in sustainability

Eco-Representatives unite! Last spring, the Research Service Learning Program collaborated with the Office of Sustainability to create a set of classes that will keep the environmental needs of the campus in mind. In the fall, graduate teaching assistant Andrew Marcum, from the Research Service Learning Program, taught a course that involved the Office of Sustainability.

Singled-out Valentine's activities for couples

Something showy Give your sweetheart a hip-hopping, heart-stopping good time at the Launchpad on Monday for the comeback tour of Eyedea and Abilities. The hip-hop group is part of the Rhymesayers Entertainment label and released its latest album, “By the Throat,” in July. Micheal Larsen, vocalist for the band, said crowds haven’t always been supportive of his music and performing. “I’ve had people throwing food at me, throwing golf balls at me,” Larsen said.

“Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens” doesn’t just summarize the innovative efforts of early twentiethcentury photographers to popularize African culture — it recreates them.



	Tommy Archuleta is a graduate student in the creative writing program. Archuleta said on Friday that he went from reading the backs of cereal boxes to reading and writing short stories and poems.

If you’ve ever wondered what Bigfoot feels like running awkwardly through the snow, you might want to check out the full-moon snowshoe hike on Saturday. UNM Recreational Services lets students rent snowshoes ($20/day) to explore the Valles Caldera National Preserve.


	On Monday Roman Wagner ponders the crisis in Haiti, and how he can help. Wagner plays guitar for the local band Radio Fig Jungle. They have a show on Saturday at El Rey Theatre to benefit Haiti’s earthquake victims.

Radio Fig Jungle throws charity bash for Haiti

Radio Fig Jungle to Albuquerque: Don’t be Haitin’. You’ll find reggae, rock, grunge and funk if you go to the benefit concert for Haiti earthquake victims at El Rey Theatre on Saturday. Four bands — the Ground Beneath, Good Old Hiroshima, Stain Glass and Radio Fig Jungle — are giving all of the proceeds to the Red Cross and Food for the Poor.
