From Redondo to Records

Royalty Life Records has come a long way from the Redondo dorms. "As far as 2006 goes, we've done a lot of incredible things," said student Lameck "Humble" Lukanga, CEO of Royalty Life Records. "We've done shows with Fat Joe, DMX, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire - any big artist you could possibly imagine. Now, people are kind of understanding there is talent in New Mexico. There is talent in the Southwest, and we're just trying to open up the doors for everyone else."

Decadent French cuisine two minutes from campus

by Shandea Williams Daily Lobo My infatuation with French food grows every time I discover a place that offers it. When I saw La Provence take over Stella Blue, I was thrilled to find out it was a French country-style restaurant that was affordable, delicious and two minutes from campus.

A dark future from a serious sci-fi flick

by Rhian Hibner Daily Lobo In a perfect world, Clive Owen would be practicing his Oscar speech. Unfortunately for him, it's not a perfect world. Instead, the academy will ignore "Children of Men," much as they ignore most science-fiction films. It's a shame, because if the academy was willing to see past the end of its nose, it would be clear that it doesn't need to look any further for best picture.

A few years ago, Unit 7 Drain came out of the woodwork. "We were basically living in makeshift homeless camps in the woods, practicing on generators from people's tool sheds," guitarist and vocalist Harry Redus said. "We lived in places in central New Mexico like La Joya, which is really, really nowhere. Veguita, Corrales - all these places that are rural farming communities."

10,000 memories for music, movie fans

Louie Torres doesn't just sell movie posters. He sells memories. "Some people buy movie posters not because they really like the movie, but because certain movies bring back certain memories for them," he said. "Maybe at the time they saw the movie, they were going through a divorce. Or maybe they had just fallen in love with somebody and had gone to see the movie with them and that was their first movie together."

The Lobo threesome

Joanna Newsom Ys Available Now Sometimes harpists should just stick to the strings. Joanna Newsom and her five-track, hour-long album Ys are, well, interesting. While the harp music itself is graceful and airy, the lyrics and vocals leave a lot to be desired. The obscenely long songs meander their ...

Selling childhoods back to gamers a slimy situation

There's an odd trend afoot in the console world. Apparently, it's become the order of the day to take Flash games off of the Internet, where they can be played for free, and then charge people several dollars to play them on a $600 console. Case in point is the primordial game "Flow." It's a fairly simple game. In it, the player controls a small primordial being that must swim around and eat other primordial beings in order to evolve. It's not complicated. It is addictive.
