Album takes different road

Jonny Lang has still got the blues. Lang said his new record is more rock than his previous efforts, but no doubt about it, he's still the same crooning singer/songwriter/guitar playing fool. He just finished writing and co-producing an album that he said he couldn't be happier with.

Once cracked open, Found Magazine is hard to put down. The annual publication is a collection of notes, photos and drawings people find lying around public places. Davy Rothbart, creator of the magazine, said it all came together one cold night in Chicago.

Techno album misses target

Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman, thinks he has gotten "closer" to something with his latest album of digital-techno soup. Who knows what to make of this assertion and for that matter, the entire album. It's not clear about what the album Closer brings a person nearer to, but it sure isn't the dance floor.

by Mar°a B. Del R°o Daily Lobo According to Albuquerque's Rape Crisis Center, a woman has about a one-in-three chance of becoming a sexual assault victim sometime in her lifetime. In the film "Rape Is," victims tell their stories. The documentary takes a comprehensive look at the rape issue, exploring its meanings and consequences.

Artwork a 'sensual' experience

UNM art graduate student Tracy Stuckey is very concerned with the human body, formally and conceptually. In his show opening this Friday, "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy," Stuckey will show just how interested he is in the body with his oil paintings of skin, and what lies beneath it - raw meat.

Labels just words for 'lesbian' artist

During those 10-plus years, she has been associated with several different labels - record labels and social labels. Panelists dance to ethnic beat

Couple learns life lessons in 'Holy Land'

by Pamela Herrington Daily Lobo "The Holy Land," is an unlikely love story between an orthodox Jew and a Russian prostitute. The film is making its American debut Friday at Madstone Theaters. It was written and directed by Eitan Gorlin and made in Jerusalem during a four-year period when the area was relatively peaceful.

Balloonist tie-dyes the sky

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo The sky is literally the limit for Jonathan Wolfe, an artist who makes his own hot air balloons. Wolfe's art is on display at Winning Coffee for the rest of October. The show includes a fascinating collection of photographs of one of his balloons, framed silk tapestries and vibrant fractal patterns.

Moore's genius on display at film center

Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore is making his way to Popejoy Hall Tuesday. In honor of his visit, "Bowling For Columbine," "Roger and Me" and "The Big One" will be showing at the Southwest Film Center this week. Moore's creative genius won him an Oscar in 2002 for "Bowling for Columbine.

Guitarist exhibits 'extreme' ability

'Bill' mixes style with action

by Michael Sanchez Daily Lobo "Kill Bill: Volume One" is Quentin Tarantino's hyper-kinetic, ultra-aware return to directing that accomplishes what it sets out to do - generate bloody mayhem. The plot is a loose one about a former assassin (Uma Thurman) who was attacked on her wedding day by fellow assassins and left for dead along with nine members of her wedding party.

Knife slices into Duke City

Shonen Knife is possibly the biggest and baddest Japanese punk-pop band of all time. The all-girl ensemble will be at the Launchpad tonight with The Mindy Set and the Roxiehearts. Shonen Knife is promoting the release of the English version of Heavy Songs - an album that is already a favorite overseas.

Teatro's 'Sue§o' seen in play's production

See also: Something that can happen to anyone. "Stop Kiss," is a play about two average, heterosexual women who meet, form a friendship and eventually fall in love.

Magn°fico embraces hip-hop

Representations of hip-hop culture have made their way into the Magn°fico Artspace gallery in the show "Hip Hop: Portraits of an Urban Hymn." The show includes photographs taken by David Scheinbaum at a variety of hip-hop shows in the Sunshine Theatre and "Rain," a theatrical production by Prophet Productions.
