Corrupt cops not held accountable in court

The Albuquerque Police Department is corrupt. When I say corrupt, I mean corrupt to the very fiber and bone marrow. What do I mean by corrupt? APD fails to fulfill the very purpose of its existence, which is to secure the rights of every person while enforcing the laws of the city and state. The roots of this corruption are varied, but two sources are their extreme partiality in dealing with people and a great disregard for people’s civil rights. You see APD’s corruption at full scale when they cover for each other to prevent each other from being charged with crimes.

Colorado's personhood amendment misunderstood

Colorado is on the move to define an unborn human being as a “person” via Amendment 67 “Protection of Pregnant Mothers and Unborn Children,” which will be up for vote on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Other campus activities more shameful than sex

Editor,I strongly support “Sex Week” at UNM, and thank and compliment Summer Little, Omar Torres, Addie Gillespie, Hunter Riley and many more. Why are campus vending machines and restaurants selling health-destroying crap more acceptable than celebrating sex?

Sex education first step to healthy relationships

Editor,In the past few days, I have noticed the strong backlash against the UNM Women’s Resource Center for their recent implementation of “Sex Week,” a week of sexual health events on campus and at Self Serve.

WRC hosts Sex Week to promote campus safety

Editor,Since entering this University over four years ago, I have witnessed many events hosted and resources provided for sex education. As a resident advisor, I helped host events and programs to provide this information to on-campus residents. The Residence Hall Association hosts at least one event per semester to provide residents with important information and best practices for safer sex, especially to freshmen who have no idea what to expect in college and living on campus. Some of these events have themes such as “Sex in the Dark” and “Sex and Vampires.”

ISIL terror group is the cancer of Islam

Editor,According to the urban dictionary a frenemy is “an enemy disguised as a friend.” Muslims all over the world should familiarize themselves with this definition, because there are groups and organizations pretending to be the friends of Muslims and of Islam when in fact they are like a cancer.

Sex education helps us make informed choices

Editor,I feel the need to write in because I think that some people’s understanding of “Sex Week” is not only incorrect, but misleading. These workshops teach young people how to navigate around all aspects of sex.Yes, they may “promote” sex, but many of us on campus are sexually active and need advice on certain aspects of our sexuality (since most of us haven’t had much of a sexual education in the first place).

Homosexuality sufferer withdraws from society

Editor,Due to the recent letter by Benjamin Sanchez, I have recently learned I suffer from the debilitating disorder known as “homosexuality.”I have lived with it for all my life, but never knew my feelings were the horrible affliction that was described. I have since looked into treatments for such a disorder, but have found that the treatments are much more harmful that the disorder itself, so there will be no help for it. As such, I have decided that I can no longer be in the face of the public.

The student voice and your student fees

Editor, Student fees are always a topical issue on campus. What we fund and how we fund it are questions we are often asked. The current controversy surrounding student fee support to the inaugural “Sex Week” has started an important conversation at perhaps the best possible time. For those in disagreement with the choice to use student fees to facilitate student services like risqué sexual health seminars, this is the perfect opportunity to let your voice be heard. For those in support, this is also the opportunity to advocate.

UNM's broken system needs to be fixed and fully system

Editor, The freshman experience is usually shared amongst a majority of high school graduates as they come together in the fall. A select few are forced to enter into the Early Start Program during the summer to complete six credit hours prior to the fall semester.

Correia showed bravery for standing against violence

Editor, I am writing as a colleague of Dr. David Correia, the UNM Professor whose job at UNM is being unnecessarily threatened due to his involvement in peaceful activism. Of course, like Dr. Correia, I do not speak on behalf of the University of New Mexico.

Raising minimum wage would disrupt economic balance

Editor, Regarding the governor candidates’ positions on the minimum wage, I just read today that Seattle plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 over several years. Anyone looking for employment in New Mexico and many other states knows that the prevailing wage is $8 – $18.

Citizens giving away their rights are enemy, not cops

Editor, The other day, on our way home from Red River, my family passed an open-pit mine. The three young girls in my car — aged 7, 8 and 4 — were genuinely horrified by the destruction. Why are they allowed to do that, they wondered. A conversation about democracy, protest and politics followed.
