People need to be educated about Islamic beliefs, goals

Editor, Two recent letters discussing Islam reflect contrasting opinions about Muslim religious belief and culture. The other letter published Tuesday says, "Islam is a religion that makes itself very distinct from culture." Our opinions, judgments and beliefs are based on education and personal experience - education including examination, analysis and scrutiny.

Question of the Week

Do you think President David Schmidly is doing a good job representing the student population? Becky Benage Sophomore Environmental science and biology I have no idea who that is. I don't deal with politics - not even for school. Nick Scholz Senior Exercise science I think Schmidly is a great president for UNM.

Council chairman shouldn't enter office with an agenda

Editor, I am running for GPSA council chairman, because I believe the deliberative body needs a neutral facilitator, an officer who does the council's bidding rather than pushes the council in pursuit of a particular political agenda. We have witnessed the damage done by recent council chairpersons who advocate their personal preferences and concertedly steer meetings in certain directions.

U.S. ignores achievements of working class, activists

Editor, How sad was my first May Day here five years ago when I learned that the day was not, as in most places around the world, the celebration of Workers Day. It was explained to me that the U.S. celebrates something called Labor Day the first Monday of September.

Wheelchair basketball team could be an asset to UNM

Editor, UNM cannot afford to have the Albuquerque Kings wheelchair basketball team forced off the main campus in Albuquerque. Rigid mind-sets plague potential and possibility at UNM. We all must work together to build an inclusive campus that will attract all students to attend UNM and build a diverse learning community.

The Lobo Threesome

Dirt City Radio Old Country Blues Available Now 3/5 This album is exactly what its title claims to be. It is country - the style is downright archaic - and it cannot be denied that it is blues. The problem here is it's underproduced. Yeah, a raw sound is usually a good thing, and yeah, no one will deny that too much production will murder an album - but someone really needs to take away Dirt City Radio's echo pedal.

Prison system should focus on rehabilitating criminals

Editor, The U.S. approach to criminal justice has fluctuated throughout its history. Presidential administrations experimented with alternative programs during the '60s and '70s. In spite of this, today's prisons are overcrowded with nonviolent offenders. This is due to a retributive approach to crime and punishment.

Old reels make for New films

Basement Films does things a little differently. "We exhibit a lot of films in a mobile, makeshift manner," said Keif Henley, group member and owner of the Guild Cinema. "We don't make films in a traditional sense. We've done things in parking lots. We've done a show inside a used car lot.

Consuming more will not help save the environment

Editor, Green has become the color of choice as of late, but who is reaping the profits? Crayola or mother Earth? I am going to be a pessimist and complain about what our society values as important. I find it sad that the green revolution has been around for decades but could not find a voice until being exploited by politicians, celebrities and big corporations.

Twin sisters deliver disappointing show

Tegan and Sara are on tour promoting their latest album, The Con, which is fitting since they basically conned me into thinking they might be good. I had never heard their music before and was excited to see their show, since I'm always in the mood for new, live music.

'Crazy liberal media' can't be trusted as free press

Editor, Here we go again. Thanks to a recent New York Times expose, verifiable and documented proof that the American people were lied to and manipulated into supporting the illegal war in Iraq has come to light. Instead of congressional hearings and condemnation, this revelation has been greeted with a great big yawn by most Americans.
