A behind-the-screens look

by Nathan Williams Daily Lobo The cover of The Google Story matches the Web-based search engine to a tee with a plain white background, the multicolored Google logo and sparse text luring readers into familiar territory. A surprising amount of work goes on behind that simple background, and the book peels back the mystery.

Letter: Holidays show gratitude to those who've sacrificed

Editor, In regard to Cali Garcia's letter in Monday's newspaper about politically incorrect holidays: I think this is one of the most foolish, insensitive letters I've ever read in the Daily Lobo. He must hate freedom because of his strong opposition to celebrating Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Beating costs of heating

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Students are taking different approaches to dealing with cold weather and high natural gas prices. Student Raquel Otero bought a programmable thermostat that turns on and off at preset times during the day, she said. "I really like it," she said.

Letter: Calling holy petroglyphs mere drawings is ignorant

Editor, I'm a utility plant tech for Ford Utilities on campus. I'm also onequarter American Indian - specifi cally, Isleta Pueblo. I read the Daily Lobo almost every day, and while fl ipping through the Nov. 23 issue, I came across the section where the Daily Lobo asks people a question, then records their responses with a picture of them next to it.

Letter: Rep. Wilson continues to support unjustified war

Editor, For New Mexico's District 1 Representative, Republican Heather Wilson, to continue to defend the case for the invasion of Iraq tells one where her priorities and loyalties lie - with the Republican Party. As we all know, we were specifi cally told that the justifi cation for unilaterally invading Iraq was that Iraq had massive amounts of weapons of mass destruction and Saddam Hussein had direct ties to the al Qaeda terrorist organization.

Letter: Defense statistics on Iraq may exaggerate progress

Editor, This is in response to Ben Mills' letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, "Mass media not covering positive changes in Iraq." Although I applaud his efforts to share some positive changes in Iraq, I might question the validity of some of the statistics found on the Department of Defense Web site as examples of progressive United States policy and influence.

Sell-out MC past his prime

by Debra Au Daily Lobo Maybe I'm not that into rap music anymore, but listening to Canibus' new Hip-Hop For Sale didn't exactly persuade me to start listening again. I guess I'm just a little nostalgic for those things that were back in the day. Like when Diddy was Puff Daddy, when Snoop Dogg didn't own a youth football league, and when Canibus was one of the rawest MCs with clever wordplay.

SUB plaque honors top students

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Some people demean UNM as just a state school, but the education students receive is comparable to top universities, said Louis Metzger, UNM alumnus and Duke University graduate student. Metzger, a 2003 Goldwater Scholar, was invited to speak Tuesday at the unveiling of a plaque commending UNM students who have received national Fulbright, Truman, Rhodes, Marshall and Goldwater scholarships since 1955.

Letter: Parking services should encourage motorcycle use

Editor, Christina Conticelli is correct about UNM's parking problems in her letter in Monday's Daily Lobo. We all know it would take cars off campus if the use of motorcycles was encouraged. But what does parking services do? It charges us $49, at my last inquiry, to register to park a motorcycle on campus to avoid a ticket.

Letter: Don't let urban sprawl take over Albuquerque

Editor, I am somewhat safe here in the University area, pretty well impervious to the shoddy construction of subdivisions. The houses here are old and beautiful, each one unique. What are we doing here in Albuquerque, turning this place into another Phoenix? Have you seen the sprawl there? The East Coast is pretty much paved over.

Letter: It's politically incorrect to keep religious holidays

Editor, Following the rash of recent news reports about zealous actions to completely separate Christmas from anything funded with tax dollars, I think the time has come for us to insist that the people who advocate radically secular positions have the courage of their convictions, and follow them to their logical conclusion.

Letter: CIRT promised to lift ban; still no access to Facebook

Editor, I was just wondering when CIRT was planning on unblocking the Facebook Web site from UNM computers. Facebook connects people through social networks at schools and is a great communication device for college students. When CIRT initially blocked Facebook a few months ago, they said it was temporary.

Letter: Petroglyph article left out important details, people

Editor, In last Monday's article in the Daily Lobo about the march for the petroglyphs, my opinion was placed in half of the article, and it sounded as if I was leading the show. I would just like to note that it was 10 people, including myself, from the native student organizations such as the Kiva Club, Native American Studies Indigenous Research Group and American Indian Business Association.

It pays to see 'Rent' on film

by Jessica Del Curto Daily Lobo The stresses of life are so much better set to the backdrop of song and dance. Perhaps this is why the musical "Rent" became the longest-running Broadway show after its premiere in 1996. For much cheaper tickets, fans can now see the movie adaptation, which is as close to the real thing as you can get.
