Letter: Civilized forum needed to discuss religion at UNM

Editor, A strange dynamic seems to surround religion on our University campus today. I took a walk around the Duck Pond during Welcome Back days, and found the student club scene to be dominated by faith-based organizations. On any given day as I walk around campus, I might suddenly be confronted by large placards threatening hell to heathens.

Letter: Mascots are racist if they offend American Indians

Editor, Regarding the letters to the Daily Lobo about American-Indian mascots, I will relate an incident that a friend related to me. It illustrates how insidious such portrayals of the American Indian can be. She said one Halloween night she dressed up her daughter in an Aunt Jemima costume and went trick-or-treating.

Tourney puts brains to the test

by Matt Gomez Daily Lobo Twelve teams tested their buzzer-hand reflexes, pressure-handling abilities and knowledge Saturday in UNM's College Bowl campus tournament. The tournament was the second one at UNM. Jessica Cheatwood-Alvarez, student activities specialist, said the tournament had taken a 40-year hiatus before last year.

Team greases up to win after rusty beginning

Unidentified woman found dead at UNM

Staff Report A woman was found dead behind University Stadium at South Lot on Sunday afternoon, said Lt. Pat Davis of the UNM Police Department. The Albuquerque Police Department received a call at 1:15 p.m. about a woman who was unconscious at the corner of Kathryn Drive and Buena Vista Street, Davis said.

Lobos finish third in home meet

She did just that, winning two of her three events Friday and Saturday at the Lobo Invitational. "I feel like I have to live up to - not a standard - but people expect a performance from me," she said.

Men's soccer tie feels like a loss

Today would be a good day for me to quit some unhealthy habits, like drinking and smoking. I don't have health insurance, and I'm relying on continuing to have a healthy body. I'm far from alone in being uninsured - the number of Americans with no health coverage is projected to pass 50 million this coming year.

Letter: UNM should still play teams with ethnic mascots

Editor, I disagree with the stance taken by Stephen Kaufman in his letter arguing that UNM should not compete against colleges and universities that use American-Indian imagery in their mascots. According to people like Kaufman, the use of American-Indian imagery in athletic mascots should be banned because such imagery is racist.
