Prof writes of a Mexico unseen by most

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo In the '70s, when UNM Professor of Anthropology David Stuart was a grad student, he wandered into a Mexican fishing village named Guaymas. There, without enough money for a hotel room or much of a desire to be part of the masses of tourists, he did something that the other American visitors didn't do.

Editor, It took George Bush two full days into the raging hurricane crisis to come out of the safe haven of his Texas ranch in Crawford, where he had been holed up for weeks vacationing while stubbornly avoiding the questions mothers of fallen soldiers were asking him in public, waiting in vain for an intelligible response.

Editorial: Lobo invites discussion of racism, class in U.S.

Hurricane Katrina, in the devastation it has wrought on thousands of Americans - many of them the poorest and most vulnerable - has forced this nation to examine issues from which it has turned away, including and especially those of racism and class. Race in particular has come to the attention of the Daily Lobo because of an editorial cartoon in Friday's paper that sparked concerns among the African-American community at UNM and in Albuquerque.

Editorial: Incompetence revealed in Katrina's aftermath

Last Wednesday, I felt horrible for those on the Gulf Coast killed by the water and winds of Hurricane Katrina, but was also hopeful that the worst was over. I didn't realize then I would spend the rest of the week and the weekend and the beginning of the next week watching babies unable to wake up, on the verge of death from dehydration.

Player's first goal a winner

Students affected by hurricane get free ride at UNM

Staff Report UNM President Louis Caldera announced Saturday the University will pay tuition costs for students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. "These are extraordinary circumstances," Caldera said in a news release. "And as a university, we are reaching out to support these students.

Gay men not allowed to give blood

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Student Marshall Martinez decided to do his part to help victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating blood. However, a United Blood Services worker told Martinez, who is gay, that he had a permanent deferral on his name, which means he can never donate blood.

Club collects donations at tailgate party

by Sunnie Redhouse Daily Lobo Students and community members took time out of tailgating to make donations for Hurricane Katrina victims and survivors. UNM's Red Cross Club had a booth at South Lot to collect donations before Monday's football game. "It's a chance to help out people in need," student Matt Andrews said.

Cornerback turns tide against Rebels

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Gabriel Fulbright's interception against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter was more than just the play that sealed UNM's victory. To the senior cornerback, it was a dream come true. "I sunk back, and I saw the ball coming, and my eyes just lit up because I knew it was game over if I caught it," Fulbright said.

Column: Future unclear after hurricane

by Jenny McKay Daily Lobo guest columnist I graduated from UNM in the spring of 2002 and moved to New Orleans in 2003. I was part of Teach for America, an organization that recruits college graduates to teach for two years in under-resourced areas. I taught 10th-grade English in the Jefferson Parish Public School System and lived in Uptown, a neighborhood in New Orleans near the Tulane and Loyola universities.
