Letter: A return to gas rations would lower fuel costs

Editor, To prevent the gasoline crisis from causing serious financial problems to most of us, some of the following measures, used during World War II, may need to be enacted - a national system of gasoline rationing and national control of gas prices. These measures worked well for the four years in the 1940s when public access to gasoline was a severe problem.

Lobo newcomer can't wait to hear fans howling

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Backup quarterback Chris Nelson said he is excited about his opportunity to step on to the field as a Lobo, and he is focused on helping the team continue its recent success. Nelson, who transferred to UNM in January from Garden City Community College in Kansas, is thrilled about the difference in competition he will be seeing this fall.

Golf team scores 3rd best GPA

Staff Report The UNM women's golf team had the third-best GPA in the nation in the 2004-2005 school year with a cumulative total of 3.628. The Lobos placed five athletes - Giselle Claux, Kailin Downs, Alexandra Phelps, Christina Spence and Ashley Rollins - on the National Golf Coaches Association Scholar Team.

Lobos' biggest playmakers ready to lead offense

Editor, The biggest complaint of the anti-recruitment activists is that recruiters make promises they cannot keep. No one knows for sure what was said during oral communications, which is why we have written contracts for just about everything we do. They should be read before signing.

University bonds in high demand

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Andrew Cullen, UNM budget administrator, said he is thrilled with the outcome of the recent $125 million bond sale. "We hit a couple of good days in the market," he said. UNM will pay 4.5 percent interest on the bonds. Cullen expected the University to pay about 4.

May 13 UNM President Louis Caldera is revising a change in admissions standards at the University that he proposed in May. The policy required students who needed Introductory Studies courses to make up their deficiency in one area before gaining admittance to UNM.

Band brings healing energy to audience

by Maria DeBlassie Daily Lobo Think of Kan'Nal as world music meets Pearl Jam. That's what Tierro, lead guitarist of the band, said. Lead singer Tzol said their show is a unique blend of music, dancing and images of sacred places around the world. In past performances, the dancers roamed the audience while feeding people grapes, passing out wine or filling the room with incense, depending on the occasion.

High school track champs join Lobos

Staff Report After a season that saw three Lobos compete at the NCAA Championships, UNM's track and field team just got 29 reasons to expect better things in the future. A recruiting class made up of 16 women and 13 men made the final cut for head coach Matt Henry.

Parents buy UNM area homes

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Sophomore Ben Chwerka lived in Hokona Hall for a year before he decided to move off campus. "I lived the experience and wanted to see what is was like to own a house," he said. Ben cosigned on a loan with his parents to purchase a house near the University.

Moore back on field after injury

Staff Report UNM running back DonTrell Moore was cleared to begin practice Aug. 8. The All-Mountain West Conference player was recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the Lobos' last game of the 2004 season. He sat out all of spring practice. Moore went down in the first quarter of the Lobos' bowl game against Navy on Dec.
