UNM celebrates Smith Plaza re-opening

After nine months of construction that made one of the most heavily trafficked areas on campus inaccessible, the newly remodeled Smith Plaza was officially opened on Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The plaza was originally constructed in 1972 and hadn’t undergone any major changes since. One major factor motivating the remodel was safety. Among the new additions are wider ramps to make the plaza more accessible, easier access for emergency vehicles and four plateau areas for socialization.

Study shows UNM greatly affects state economy

The University of New Mexico is one of the biggest institutions in the entire state — its full impact was revealed on Monday. During a press conference at Lobo Rainforest, UNM President Garnett Stokes revealed the results of a study titled “The Statewide Economic Impact of the University of New Mexico.” In the study’s executive summary, UNM’s economic impact includes 24,985 jobs and an economic output of $3.1 billion.

New Mexico to enact straight-party voting next election

The Secretary of State (SOS) Maggie Toulouse Oliver announced Wednesday that straight-party voting will be an option on the 2018 election ballot, a decision that has already received backlash from both sides. Toulouse Oliver said she promised to implement straight-party, also called straight ticket, voting during her run for Secretary of State, and being on the verge of ballot printing deadline, she said there was no other time to announce the decision, because the office needed time to test sample ballots.

It’s the end of the summer, meaning it’s time for New Mexico’s own “burning man” tradition, this Friday, Aug. 31 at Marcy Park in Santa Fe. For anyone from out of state — the burning of Zozobra (the 50-foot tall figure is affectionately named “Old Man Gloom”) is a Santa Fe tradition, stretching back for 94 years.

ASUNM grants $14,000 to Women's Rugby

The Associated Students at the University of New Mexico voted to appropriate just over $14,000 to Women’s Rugby on Wednesday night on its first full-senate meeting of the semester. With 19 votes for and 1 absentee-abstention, ASUNM voted to continue funding the team for the duration of the fall semester. Women’s rugby is currently a club sport and does not fall under the athletics department. The women’s rugby team competed in the elite eight round of the National Championship last spring.

Movie Review: "Crazy Rich Asians" offers new perspective on relationships

The seemingly happy, romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” proves to be a two hour realistic drama of what “meeting the parents” actually entails. The movie follows Rachel Chu and Nick Young, a seemingly normal couple currently living in New York. When Nick asks if Rachel will accompany him to his best friend’s wedding in his home country of Singapore, she comes to find out that Nick and his family are extremely wealthy.

UNM anime club offers fans a place to socialize

For the past 12 years, the University of New Mexico’s Anime Club has been inviting students to celebrate anime and the culture surrounding it, as an official club on campus. “It’s just a place where if you are a nerd or a geek you can come in, hang out and make friends,” said Alejandro Reyes, the current president of the anime club.

UNM Press gift hundreds of books to tribal libraries

The Center for Regional Studies (CRS) and UNM Press at the University of New Mexico have gifted 850 books to 25 underfunded public and tribal libraries in New Mexico, with each library receiving 34 books. The books focus on the history, landscape and the communities of the region. This collaborative project began in 2009 in an effort to promote the relationship between the community and UNM.

Honors College teaches class on archaeology of trails

The University of New Mexico Honors College reintroduced Archeology of Trails and Anthropology of Place this semester. According to Troy Lovata, the chair of the Honors College and professor of the class, he has taught this class off and on since it was introduced in 2015. With a background in archeology that is grounded in anthropology, Lovata has extensive knowledge in human history. He has taught courses on landscape, culture and place for more than a dozen years.

UNMH offers world's smallest pacemaker

The University of New Mexico Hospital is now offering the world’s smallest pacemaker. This new pacemaker, called the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS), is about the size of a vitamin pill and uses single chamber technology to treat patients with bradycardia.

Volleyball: UNM set to host Lobo Classic in home opener

The University of New Mexico volleyball team will be looking to carry some momentum from its last match back to Albuquerque as the team hosts the annual Lobo Classic Tournament, where it will face three opponents — culminating in a matchup with the in-state rival Aggies. New Mexico (1-2) had a rough start on the road, dropping its first two matches of the season at the Idaho Volleyball Classic — but grinded out a five-set victory over host school Idaho to salvage the weekend. UNM assistant head coach Pauline Manser said the team has a very different look this year and there were a lot of adjustments made over what was a very competitive weekend.

Men's Soccer: First game as a Lobo yields Player of the Week honors for Matt Puig

Sometimes people just need a change of scenery. can be a good thing. The University of New Mexico men's soccer team picked up a big win in its season opener, taking down No. 22 Seattle by a count of 4-2 at the UNM Soccer Complex. Sophomore New Mexico forward Matt Puig, a sophomore transfer, was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week after . But receiving individual accolades Sophomore transfer Matt Puig tallied five points on a pair of goals and an assist in his first outing as a Lobo.

Football: Davie says season opener will hold the answers to many questions

Many of the questions that Bob Davie has about his University of New Mexico football team will be answered Saturday night at Dreamstyle Stadium as the Lobos kick off their season against the University of the Incarnate Word. “Most of all, I’m just excited,” Davie said. “(I) don’t take this opportunity for granted. I feel very fortunate to be here having the opportunity to do this.” The Lobos, who went 3-9 last season — including losing seven straight to finish the year — will bring a revamped offense to the table under new offensive coordinator Calvin Magee and an excitement level that Davie said is as high as it has been during his tenure. Magee was a part of Rich Rodriguez’ coaching staff at Arizona before being let go along with Rodriguez. At Arizona, he directed a spread option style offense, which he has blended in with the triple option that the Lobos have been known for during the first six years of Davie’s tenure.

Women's Soccer: Newcomer Alesia Garcia gets Player of the Week nod

The University of New Mexico women's soccer team has a lot of new faces on the squad. Several of them have made significant contributions already, but the Mountain West took notice of one young Lobo when doling out selections to honor the conference's top players. UNM freshman forward Alesia Garcia was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for matches played through Aug. 26, a release said. Garcia played a big role in helping New Mexico bounce back after losing its season opener to notch a pair of home wins over the weekend. She netted a score in both games as she and her teammates punished opposing goalkeepers for a combined nine goals.

National Science Foundation Day held today in SUB

The University of New Mexico will be hosting National Science Foundation Day in New Mexico from 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. today in the Student Union Building. According to the NSF Day in NM website, the event is intended to help early career and tenure track faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers learn more about the NSF’s proposal process in order to make themselves more competitive when applying for funding.

Protestors call for abolishment of ICE

A rally organized by Black Live Matter LGBTQAI+ Migrant Project drew a crowd of about 100 to the intersection of Lomas Boulevard and 4th Street on Monday Aug. 28 to call for the end of ICE. The Abolish Ice rally was the groups day of action, and the first project to demonstrate solidarity between diverse groups, said Tiara Gendi, one of the organizers. “We are calling out the inhumane conditions that queer people are being exposed to when they are in detention centers,” Gendi said. “We are standing in memory of queer immigrants that died in the hands of ice.”

J.C. Penney offers discounts on business clothes for students

On Sunday, J.C. Penney partnered up with the University of New Mexico’s Career Services department to host their third communal “Suit Up!” event at Coronado Mall. The event is designed to provide discounts on business and professional attire for UNM’s students, alumni, faculty and staff. The event began in the fall of 2017 with Jenna Crabb, director of career services, who has held the position since 2006. Crabb was approached by executives from the department store with the idea and she agreed to it.

Men’s Soccer: Lobos shut out by No. 24 Washington Huskies

The University of New Mexico’s men’s soccer team was held scoreless on Monday night in its match against No. 24 Washington as the Lobos fell to the Huskies 2-0. New Mexico (1-1) seemed to come out with less energy than it had in Friday's season opener, in which the team dispatched of No. 22 Seattle by a score of 4-2. As the Lobos and Huskies felt each other out, both appeared to be defensive minded.

Football: Lobos name Tuioti as starting quarterback

The New Mexico Lobos have their new starting quarterback. Bob Davie announced on Monday that redshirt sophomore Tevaka Tuioti will be the starting quarterback on Saturday, Sep. 1 at 6 p.m. against Incarnate Word. The decision was between redshirt senior Coltin Gerhart and Tuitoti after a hamstring injury to junior college transfer Sheriron Jones took him out of the running for week one.
