Spirit Program: A glimpse into life as Lobo Louie

The University of New Mexico's Spirit Program members log countless hours practicing cheers and routines to meet the physical demands of performing tumbles, flips and other feats on game day. Now imagine doing all of those things while having limited vision and mobility and being weighed down by a heavy, bulky suit. That is the case for those who transform into the Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy mascots that fans see at so many sporting events.

Women’s Basketball: N’Dea Flye becomes second Lobo to transfer after the 2017-18 season

It appears the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will be losing another player following the conclusion of the 2017-18 season due to a transfer. N’Dea Flye, a freshman guard for the Lobos last season, announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon her decision to leave the university. Flye would become the second player to transfer out of the program — Mykiel Burleson, a sophomore guard for the Lobos last season, decided to leave UNM too, likely hoping for more playing time elsewhere.

Softball: Rocky start too much to overcome, Lobos lose 12-4 to Rams

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Lobos were able to get the best of Colorado State ace Bridgette Hutton. In Sunday’s series finale, Hutton returned the favor in a 12-4, five inning run rule win. The Rams wasted no time getting scoring started, recording a four run, four hit first inning that was highlighted by a 2 run Haley Donaldson home run that opened the scoring. In the second, the Rams were able to add five more runs to their tally, driving in their fifth run after Jensen Main issued a bases loaded walk to Amber Nelson. The sixth run came across on a fielder's choice hit to shortstop Cameron O'Grady that she was unable to handle while attempting to get the lead runner, resulting in an error and a run scoring. A ground out from Danni Klein brought another run in before Hannah McCorkhill hit a single to center field that brought the other two runs in the inning across, giving Colorado State a 9-0 lead heading into the third inning.

Finance and Facilities Committee to determine fate of athletics, in light of $7.5 million deficit

The Board of Regents Finance and Facilities Committee meeting is on Tuesday — and all eyes are on the Department of Athletics’ accumulated $7.5 million deficit and what the University of New Mexico is going to do with it. If there’s no plan by May 1, the state’s Higher Education Department is threatening to step in. In a letter to new President Garnett Stokes sent in March, HED Cabinet Secretary Barbara Damron reiterated the decision to place the University under financial supervision, warning that deadlines for a plan had passed, and HED would be prepared to enforce sanctions against UNM.

Fiestas brings annual fun to Johnson Field

As college students grow more and more stressed throughout the semester, Fiestas at the University of New Mexico comes around for an opportunity to blow off steam and dress up, according to UNM freshman Rachel Shiver. Fiestas started as a rodeo, said Chance Hoover, the Students Special Events Executive director. “When the University was founded, a couple years after that, the festival was a three-day rodeo, and it did include live music,” he said.

Album Review: The Weeknd tightens up and changes tone on "My Dear Melancholy,"

Just over a year ago Able Tesfaye, known more widely by his super star persona The Weeknd, released his overly flashy album “Starboy,” the follow up to his Grammy winning “The Beauty, Behind the Madness” (TBBTM). With Able teasing on Instagram that he was back in the studio working on new music, the world waited in anticipation for him to release the first single. On March 29, Able posted artwork for what many thought might be his new single, called “My Dear Melancholy,”. But fans in London noticed a suspicious billboard that stated “New album from The Weeknd out now.” Accidentally put up a day early and tweeted by fans, the world was now just hours away from another full album by The Weeknd.

Letter: Libertarian and Republican politics are socially harmful

Editor, It is common to hear Republicans and Libertarians say that less government is the solution to people's problems. This idea is not new and it has it's genesis in the writings of Thomas Robert Malthus. According to their Malthusian logic programs like food stamps, medicaid, social security and affirmative action should be eliminated, because government should not interfere with the wild west capitalism. Malthus argued that human population growth would eventually exceed the amount of food that was being produced; therefore he concluded that war, disease and famine were necessary in order to not exhaust the planet's limited resources.

International Issue: Column — Esperanto : The universal international language / Kolumno — Esperanto: la universala internacia lingvo

Esperanto is sometimes referred to as “the International Language,” according to esperanto.net. Unlike traditional languages, such as English, Spanish or Chinese, which have naturally emerged over many hundreds or even thousands of years, Esperanto was intentionally invented by one person. Esperanto estas foje nomata "Internacia Lingvo" laŭ esperanto.net. Kontraste al tradiciaj lingvoj, kiel ekzemple la angla, hispana aŭ ĉina, kiuj nature evoluis dum multaj centoj aŭ eĉ miloj da jaroj, Esperanton intence inventis unu persono.

International Issue — Column: Xenophobia must be recognized and fought/Columna: La xenofobia debe ser reconocida y combatida

It is easy to claim — on behalf of a nation, on behalf of a generation, on behalf of yourself as an individual — a progressive attitude much too advanced for destructive, discriminatory ideologies. It is easy to believe and maintain that you see beyond borders, that a common identity as humans makes differences in nationalities or cultures immaterial and arbitrary. Baseball: UNM swept by Fresno State at home

It likely wasn’t the series the University of New Mexico baseball team had hoped for as the Lobos dropped their fifth straight game — and third in a row to Fresno State — falling by a score of 11-6 on Sunday at Santa Ana Star Field. Game three of series began much the same way as the opening game against the Bulldogs (20-11, 7-8 MW) as the Lobos (12-17-1, 6-9 MW) surrendered a multi-run inning in the top of the first, falling behind 3-0. Freshman Robert Gasser, UNM’s starting pitcher, was able to induce Fresno State center fielder Zach Ashford into a groundout to start the game, but subsequently walked two straight batters before giving up a three-run homer to sophomore Carter Bins to give the Bulldogs the early advantage.
