Obviously, the UNM seal has to go. The seal is supposed to be an anodyne bit of branding, totally inoffensive and a brief, pleasant reminder of our fine University. It doesn’t matter if the protesters are right about it being offensive. The fact that people are protesting it means it isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do.
Francisco Cuellar will graduate this spring with a degree in psychology despite insurmountable odds. Born in Albuquerque, the father of three has been hit by a car, served a lengthy stay in prison and been shot in the head.
A UNM student set to graduate this semester is already living out his dream by creating and writing for his own website focused on NASCAR. The nationally accredited website, TheRacingExperts.com, is owned and operated by UNM’s own Dominic Aragon, graduating with a degree in mass communication.
As a first generation college student and the daughter of two factory workers, Taren Smith-Townsend initially struggled to balance the responsibilities of being a single mother and finishing her degree. Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, both of Smith-Townsend’s parents worked for General Motors. Her mother has been in and out of her life due to alcoholism, she said, leaving her father to raise her since the age of three.
The ending to New Mexico’s long road trip did not go as planned as the club has watched its first-place lead shrink to just 0.5 games. For the first time in the 2016 campaign, UNM dropped a Mountain West series after being away from Santa Ana Star Field for seven games, the Lobos’ longest stint away from home.
Sophomore Tyler Stevens righted New Mexico’s ship on Saturday afternoon after Friday night’s difficult outing by the Lobo pitching staff. Stevens threw a gem, working in eight innings of one-run ball. While his performance wasn’t flawless, the righty was able to work through some tough jams to keep UNM in the ballgame.
UNM's pitching was much better than Friday night's 23-4 blowout, but it wasn't enough as the Lobos couldn't get the offense going in its 2-1 loss to SDSU on Saturday afternoon. UNM has now dropped its past four games, along with nine straight at home. The final game is set for Sunday at noon. This is a developing story.
New Mexico maintained its 1.5 game lead in first place on Saturday but not in the way they wanted to after falling to UNLV 11-6 on Friday. The Lobos received some help from San Diego State who beat Fresno State with some late game heroics by a final of 4-2.
New Mexico stumbled out of the gates on Friday night in their series opener against San Diego State. The stumble led to a nightmare game for the Lobos who were blown out 23-4 against the Aztecs.
As the season is winding down, accolades are beginning to come in for first place New Mexico. However, junior DH Chris DeVito and senior pitcher Alex Estrella aren’t just getting noticed for their on-field efforts in a tight Mountain West Conference race. They are also dominating in the classroom.
Since everyone wants to change our school symbols these days, maybe we should get rid of the Lobo mascot. After all, I am sure that members of the cat, bird, fish, frog and insect community feel marginalized and intimidated by depictions of a vicious wolf.
In the name of liberating women from the clutches of Shariah, how many innocent women have we killed from all our bombing for all these years? Is there even a running count, by us? The Middle East probably has this count, however rough, but will our own media so much as breathe a word about it to us here stateside? You think the Arabs don't talk about it? We certainly don't.
The ongoing campaign to abolish the University of New Mexico's official seal accuses it of neglecting indigenous students of New Mexico in the display, but Native Americans students themselves feel neglected as a result of the campaign. Eric DeLorme, a senior majoring in Chicana/ Chicano Studies, said he does not believe every Native American student’s view is represented with the movement, and a majority of the students had no idea it even existed.
It's clear that the UNM seal has got to go. How and when that happens is still uncertain. I hope, however, that it is not too early to suggest a replacement.
The Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) at UNM held an open house Wednesday morning, inviting the UNM community for coffee and breakfast while talking face-to-face with anyone in attendance. After receiving complaints about difficulties locating the office, OEO staff members said they recognized the event as a tremendous opportunity to spread awareness of the its whereabouts.
The ongoing battle between commuter students for parking at UNM has claimed a new victim; nearby businesses. Business owners that used to turn a blind eye to students using their parking lots are finding that policing their grounds may be the only way to keep unlawful motorists from taking parking spaces normally reserved for their customers.
With graduation quickly approaching, some seniors are realizing they have not only met their mark for credit hours, but vastly exceeded it as well. Many students transfer from CNM, a two-year community college located nearby, to UNM in hopes of finishing their degree program.
Mike Bradbury is now ready for the 2016-2017 campaign, as far as his coaching staff goes. This week, the newest head coach at UNM said it feels good to have his staff in order and anticipates good things to come from his group.

A member of the New Mexico track and field team received national athlete of the week honors in her sport after she posted the top time in the world this year in her event. Courtney Frerichs was named Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the NCAA Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week.
