HSC under lawsuit and subpoena over fetal tissue

The New Mexico Alliance for Life filed a lawsuit, through its attorney, against UNM Health Sciences Center for withholding documents in regards to using fetal tissue for research. Elisa Martinez, Executive Director of the New Mexico Alliance for Life, said that the alliance requested documents from UNMHSC in accordance with the state's open records laws. The documents requested involved biohazard compliance and approval processes for research on human subjects.

Two UNM students win tax law competition

Two UNM Law School students won best overall and best written submission in the J.D. division of the 15th Annual ABA Law Student Tax Challenge held in Los Angeles. The students received first place in the oral arguments for their performance in defending their work product at the competition. They also won for the best written submission, which was decided before attending the meeting.

Redshirt junior Andrea Leblanc returns the ball Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The Lobos men’s tennis team will play this Friday in Albuquerque and the women's team will play in Lawrence, Kansas.

Tennis: Men look to turn things around at home while women take to the road

The New Mexico men’s tennis program finally returns to Albuquerque to make its home spring debut, while the women’s team hits the road for six consecutive road matches. The women’s tennis team, after notching back-to-back upset wins at home, looks to build some confidence on the road as it heads to Kansas to play a pair of matches this weekend.

Track and Field: Lobos look to defend conference titles at home track

New Mexico’s track and field team is ready to defend its conference crowns at the Mountain West Indoor Championships, which start Thursday and conclude on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The men enter the meet as the three-time defending MW champions, while the women have won the last two titles. The women’s squad also earned a new distinction on Monday. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association moved the women’s team into the top 25 national rankings. The team jumped up 10 spots to grab the 23rd position, which is the highest ranking in program history.

A memorial at Rio Grande High School made for Jacob Salazar, a UNM student who died in a vehicular manslaughter case in January.

Drunk driver charged in death of UNM student

An Albuquerque man has been charged with vehicular homicide that resulted in the death of a UNM student. Jacob Salazar, a freshman mechanical engineering major on a full academic scholarship, was killed in January during a car accident while driving on Coors Boulevard and Las Estancias Court.

Mountain Head comes out on top at Fight for Fiestas

The competition for Fight for Fiestas 2016 came to a head Tuesday night when the judges finally announced the winning band. Five groups, each specializing in a different genre, were given 15 minutes on stage to impress the judges and more importantly, the audience for a spot in Fiestas de Albuquerque, a festival held every spring.

Baseball: New Mexico shifts focus from Aloha State to home opener

A short week to get readjusted to Land of Enchantment is in store for New Mexico as the team prepares for its home opener against Wichita State this weekend. The Lobos (3-1) took home its first series in Hawaii since 1985 on Monday, but the players are still reeling from jet lag after arriving back in Albuquerque on Tuesday.

IDI designs software to support students in NM and across the country

The Institute for Design and Innovation recently unveiled some of the cutting edge work being done at UNM to increase student success in the long run. These developments come in the form of analytic tools, developed by IDI, working in conjunction with compiled data to present higher education outcomes. The tools have various functions across higher education and are meant for use by students, faculty, advisers, administrators and decision makers in NM.

Nurses for Bernie visit campus

After rolling into town on the “Bernie Bus” provided to them by the Progressive Democrats of America, members of National Nurses United set up shop outside of the SUB this week. Only they weren’t selling things, they were literally giving them away. From beanies and buttons to bumper stickers endorsing democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, there was no shortage of Bernie-brand goods being distributed by the Nurses 4 Bernie in Cornell Mall on Tuesday.

Women's Basketball: Lobos fall just short in final seconds vs. No. 25 CSU

It came down to the final shot, but New Mexico’s hopes of upsetting No. 25 Colorado State at WisePies Arena on Wednesday night were dashed with senior Khadijah Shumpert’s last second miss. The Lobos outscored the top team in the conference in the first and final quarter of the contest, but the squad’s offensive lull in the middle quarters of the game gave CSU (25-1, 15-0 MW) the advantage it needed in what resulted in a 49-48 thriller.

Column: McMahon is only hurting Reigns

The determination Vince McMahon has to get Roman Reigns over with the crowd is just amazing. No matter how much the WWE fans reject Reigns, it just seems to give McMahon more motivation to try to prove that Reigns is indeed what the fans want. If Monday’s Raw was any indication, Reigns isn’t anywhere close to being the company’s top baby face.

UNM student lends an ear to people in need

The Agora Crisis Center has a hotline that takes calls on issues like domestic violence, LGBT issues, rape and suicide. One of the people working for the crisis center hotline is Julia Garcia, a nursing student who offers time out of her busy schedule to help others who are struggling. "Through Agora, you do a month long training that is really intense, but only one day was focused on suicide," Garcia said. "So I did another set of training regiments to get the Suicide First Aid certification so that I could intervene in suicide cases."

Baseball: Lobos take down Hawai'i in historic fashion

New Mexico hadn’t won a series in Hawai’i in over 20 years. That streak came to a halt during UNM’s 7-1 victory over the Rainbow Warriors on Monday. The victory was the final in a four game stint against Hawai’i as the Lobos improved to 3-1 to begin their season.

Men's basketball: Lobos drop 10th game away from Albuquerque

Another road trip, another two losses for New Mexico. The Lobos’ woes away from WisePies Arena continued Tuesday night in an 86-69 loss at Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colorado. The latest setback marked the 10th loss outside Albuquerque’s city limits, including seven losses in true road games.

Women's Basketball: Lobos face big test against nationally ranked CSU

Saying that Colorado State has not fared well at WisePies Arena would be an understatement. In Albuquerque, the Rams have tallied only a single win at the mile-high venue dating back to 1998. However, this year, CSU (24-1, 14-0 MW) has remained unscathed in conference play and has rallied off 21 consecutive wins. Oh, and the Rams have joined the nation’s top 25 because of it.

UNM professor visits D.C. as part of new cancer treatment consortium

A UNM professor visited the White House to brief Vice President Joe Biden's staff on new developments in cancer research. Cheryl Willman, a distinguished professor of pathology and internal medicine at the UNM School of Medicine, was part of a five member delegation that visited Washington D.C. about the progress of The Total Cancer Care/Oncology Research Information Exchange Network consortium that spoke about advancements in the field of precision medicine, the importance of speeding up development of more effective personalized cancer treatments and the need for sharing scientific data.

Fight for Fiestas is a competition where bands battle for a spot in playing at the annual Fiestas outdoor concert. Albuquerque musicians prepare to battle for Fiestas

A selection of local bands will battle it out for victory at the annual Fight for Fiestas on Tuesday night in the SUB Ballroom for the honor of playing live at Fiestas in April. The battle features bands spanning multiple genres such as rock, hip-hop, metal, electronic dance music, jazz and more. Fight for Fiestas is organized by ASUNM, specifically by Student Special Events and spearheaded by SSE Cultural Director Tatiana Solis. “In preparation for our big music festival, we have a battle of the bands, Fight For Fiestas, where UNM students who play music can audition to compete," she said. “In this competition, the crowd, along with the SSE directors, votes for who they think is the best. The winner gets a slot in playing during Fiestas.”

Award winning supervisor talks managing strategies

The old adage "don’t take it personally" doesn’t resonate with Linda Schenkel, program manager for the Department of Psychiatry at UNM. And since she was recently named a recipient of the UNM’s Staff Council Outstanding Supervisor award, she might be on to something. Schenkel, one of 10 children and a mother of two, said she believes the most important aspect of supervision is the development of fair, personal relationships with each of her staff members. “It’s really important to get to know them,” she said. “Every employee wants to be heard.”
