A UNM professor has received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Medieval Academy of America Committee on Centers and Regional Associations, according to a UNM press release. Timothy Graham, professor of history and director of the Institute for Medieval Studies, said that he was honored to receive the award, according to the press release.
Scientists at UNM conducted research to better study carbon emissions through fault systems in the East African Rift, according to a UNM press release, part of an effort to understand carbon emissions from the Earth’s interior and how it affects the atmosphere. The research is funded by the NSF Tectonics Program, and is being directed by UNM Professor Tobias Fischer as part of a continued effort to quantify global emissions of CO2 from the Earth’s interior.
UNM’s Continuing Education Conference Center will host VEX Robotics Competition on Jan. 23, according to a UNM press release. According to the statement, middle and high school students from across New Mexico will participate in the competition sponsored by the UNM School of Engineering.

Aaron Herrera finished his first season with the UNM men’s soccer team with a total of 1,332 minutes played after making 15 appearances, including 14 starts. But that is only a small part of the freshman defender’s resume, which he began to build quite early.
UNM administration has a lot on its plate this semester, from renovations and marketing to the University’s budget and the upcoming legislative session. President Bob Frank said one of the big issues facing administration is working on the University’s budget for next year, which determines salary decisions and funding for programs. It took Bob Davie four long years to turn the New Mexico football program into a winning one. And less than a month after leading the Lobos to their first bowl appearance in almost a decade, Davie was rewarded with a well-deserved two-year contract extension last week. Davie is now signed up to be the head coach for the Lobos until 2021 and will receive a $50,000 raise. The move is a smart one for New Mexico Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. Since his hire Davie has managed to pull UNM out of the doldrums of college football, reviving a program that many thought couldn’t be saved.

Editor, The University’s health plans, as well as its prescription plan, are becoming a rip-off as the companies that back them choke us for every cent that we have in the form of high deductibles and co-payments. Furthermore, these co-called health plans won’t let us, their customers, choose the kind of alternative health care or “compound” medications that we want --- even if those treatments end up costing them less money.

New Mexico finally found its groove on offense Wednesday night in a rugged 67-53 battle against UNLV. Head coach Yvonne Sanchez said she was pleased with her team’s response to bring a halt to UNM’s two-game skid. Sanchez said she has been working on being more patient as a coach to let the team play through its mistakes.
