Letter: Case law cited in suspension unconnected to funding issue

I find the ruling of ASUNM Justice Seth Barany against Sen. Rebecca Hampton, and the Daily Lobo article covering the ruling, disturbing on many levels. First of all, it is irresponsible, dangerous and unacceptable for Justice Barany to incorrectly quote a U.S. Supreme Court case to legitimize a ridiculous decision by ASUNM. Second, the ASUNM law that is cited applies to ASUNM as a whole, not to a single senator.

Editorial: Daily Lobo will now include non-gender-specific pronoun

In a recent edition of the Daily Lobo, the staff was faced with a new issue that is likely to crop up more and more: gender-specific pronouns. A source asked that we not use a gender-specific pronoun and instead asked that we use they/them when referring to this person. In a news story, this is a nearly impossible request to honor — when an article includes quotes and voices from multiple people, using they/them to refer to a single person can make it confusing for a reader to know who is being referred to. We understand there was no simple solution. None of the standard journalistic references offer a guideline on this and conversations on the subject offer widely varied and often conflicting solutions. While the Daily Lobo editors did their best to handle this request immediately, it is obvious that a good long-term solution is needed.

Food column: Uses plentiful for that dusty, ol' waffle iron

It sits on a shelf gathering dust most of the year, only used on the occasional lazy Sunday. It may have been a gift or handed down. Now, instead of being stored away, the waffle iron may become one of the most used appliances in the kitchen. The waffle iron can be an amazingly useful and versatile tool for cooks with a bit of creativity. Since a waffle iron heats from both sides and has a fairly wide range of heat settings, it can be used to make everything from hash browns to grilled cheese.

State lawmaker says dispute over Lottery Scholarship is pure politics

New Mexico Sen. Michael Sanchez is a Democrat representing the 29th District. He has served the Legislature since 1992 and is currently the Senate Majority Leader. Sanchez introduced the original legislation that created the Lottery Scholarship in 1995, and he has been working to keep the scholarship accessible and able to pay 100 percent of tuition ever since. With the Lottery Scholarship facing a major shortfall, it is possible that next year UNM students who receive it may only get 80 percent of their tuition paid for. The Daily Lobo talked to Sanchez about the work he’s done to protect the scholarship, and possible solutions for fixing it.

Red Faction supports Muslims, other groups

Editor, As a co-founder and member, of a politically left student club on campus, I would like the opportunity to speak to some issues that have been raised in the Daily Lobo these past few weeks. I would like to start off by giving some background information on who we are. Red Student Faction is a chartered student club at UNM that has been on campus for one year. Our guiding principles are to critically interrogate systems of oppression and join others in systemically challenging oppression and exploitation.

ISIS panel was an attack on Christians, non-believers

Editor, In defense of Michael Noah Guebara, the ISIS panel did in fact turn the discussion into a personal attack session against Christianity. As the student who sat right behind Guebara, and also engaged the imam throughout the entire discussion session, I can attest to the fact that the imam was presenting a whitewashed version of Islam that does not exist in reality. There are several points that need to be addressed, but before that it must be mentioned that the Muslim Student Association did not upload the entirety of the discussion – there is an important part of the discussion missing, which is about jihad.

Five & Why, what Lobos love to watch: With Robert Burford.

Television shows can be a good form of entertainment, introduce viewers to different cultures and explore social phenomena’s. However, television has its downside. For Robert Burford, student conduct officer for the Dean of Student’s Office, the schedule changes are the worst. Burford said that most of his favorite shows are not running anymore, and he didn’t know what to do with his Thursday nights after one of his favorite shows ended.

Artwork keeps language alive at Linguicide exhibit

In effort to bring awareness to dying and dead languages, one New Mexico artist is looking to her past for inspirations. Last Friday, the Weyrich Gallery opened a new exhibit titled Linguicide from local artist Harriette Tsosie. The inspiration came, she said, from a DNA test she did after rummaging through her grandmother’s belongings. What caught her attention the most was the diary her grandmother kept from 1900 to1968, she said.

Campus briefs for April 7

On March 30, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez signed HB 170, the Higher Education Endowment Act, one of UNM’s priority pieces of legislation, according to a UNM press release. The bill will allow an infusion of $5.5 million to the Higher Education Endowment once Martinez signs the state budget. Universities and colleges can compete within their sectors for funding from the endowment to attract endowed chairs, professorships and research positions in fields like science and engineering, as long as the school provides some private funds, according to the press release.

ISIS discussion was intended to denounce religious violence

Editor, Has the quality of education in America become so empty and meaningless that a UNM student would actually post an online video claiming the Muslim Student Association was holding a pro-ISIS rally at UNM? I am seriously concerned for the future of my country if a man can actually earn a high school diploma and be accepted at a university while being so woefully inadequate on such a basic level of critical thinking. Let me attempt to disabuse some of my fellow human beings at UNM about the MSA’s alleged support of ISIS.

New Mexico’s inability to find the strike zone late in the game hindered the Lobos’ chances of sweeping Nevada. In the top of the sixth with the game tied at 4, junior pitcher Lauren Soles was all over the zone in her short relief attempt. Nevada took advantage of the righty’s wild outing, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth eventually leading to the Wolf Pack’s 7-4 victory at Lobo Field on Saturday.
