Editor, What has the world come to? In looking at the news today I came the conclusion that our world has come to a point in time that we do not deserve God’s continued grace and restraint.

Editor, I drink no booze. Booze causes car crashes which paralyze and kill thousands, including my niece Rachel. Booze causes dreadful family fights and ruined romances. Men wake up in jail cells — not remembering stabbing or shooting their close friend the night before.

Men's Basketball: Conference wins add up

New Mexico’s road warriors return home to The Pit for the next two games, concluding a stretch of 17 days on the road in the last 24. So far the road has not tripped the Lobos up since Mountain West play began earlier this month.

Women's Basketball: Lobos seeking game win

The defensive miscues are finally taking a toll on the New Mexico women’s basketball team. Wednesday night’s 75-69 loss to Utah State pushed UNM’s losing streak to five games, and the Lobos have allowed teams to shoot 43.3 percent from the field during the slide.

Students say it’s ‘Up to Us’

Some UNM students are hoping to get an edge in a national competition that kicked off last week. According to a press release from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation website, five UNM students will compete in Up to Us, a national competition in which 24 university teams will attempt to “educate and engage their peers on the effects of the nation’s rising debt and motivate action in Washington on fiscal issues.”

‘Fire’ was only elevator motor

After inspecting Castetter Hall on Wednesday morning, police and fire personnel found that the incident was a false alarm. UNM Police Department Operations Lieutenant Trace Peck said the department responded to the incident after getting a call about a possible blaze in the building.

Program gives students a chance to teach abroad

Deborah Rifenbary, associate dean at the UNM College of Education Administration, has set up a one-month exchange program with an elementary school teacher in Austria. The program sends UNM students in the education program to teach students in Austria’s elementary and middle schools.

The Rev. Richard Litzau said that a recent decision by the Santa Fe archbishop seeks to improve the parish at his expense. “The challenge is that the archbishop wants to increase the number of diocesan vocations,” he said. “So he decided to assign diocesan priests here. That’s what he’s done, and we have to move.”

A UNM alumnus has led a project to protect American soldiers. MRIGlobal recently announced the end of development for the Individual Protection Ensemble Mannequin System, headed by Mark Abashian, who obtained his M.S. in geochemistry from UNM.

Forward Cameron Bairstow netted a game-high 22 points to lead the New Mexico men’s basketball team to a 78-65 win at Utah State Tuesday night. The Lobos (16-4, 8-1 Mountain West) played their second straight game without starting center Alex Kirk

Opinions are changing when it comes to the subject of marijuana — and New Mexico should join the short list of states that have pioneered the path to pot decriminalization. As New Mexico Sen. Editor, Two weeks ago the UNM community was informed of changes to the Aquinas Newman Center on Las Lomas. Archbishop Sheehan informed the Dominican priests that they must be out of the Newman Center by July 1. Diocesan priests will continue the work at the Newman Center.
