Column: Democratic win will hurt economy

This summer, an enormous quantity of unmarketable mortgage?backed securities precipitated bank failures, a stock market collapse and "required" a gigantic government rescue. The Democratic Party largely caused this financial crisis. Should the Democratic Party prove ascendant on Election Day, the damage it has done to the economy could well be replicated in energy supply, health care, civil liberties and national security.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, a Republican, is running against City Council President Martin Heinrich, a Democrat, for New Mexico's First Congressional District. The seat has been occupied by a Republican since it was created in 1969. Energy Heinrich: Would start an "Apollo project" to reduce our dependency on foreign oil, create 3 million high-paying, "green-collar" jobs and lead the way in exports of green technology.

Third-party players look to shake up two-party system

A third-party candidate hasn't won the presidency since 1860, when Abraham Lincoln came into office. But third parties serve an important function in the democratic process, despite their low election rate, said Michael Rocca, assistant professor of political science.

Passing Mil Levy will provide funds to UNMH

The 6.4 Mil Levy has been in place since 1954 and is up for reauthorization every eight years. The levy provided about $75 million from property taxes to UNM Hospital last year. Billy Sparks, executive director of communications and marketing for the Health Sciences Center, said the levy helps pay for crucial equipment at the hospital.

McCain's experience, character exactly what country needs

Editor, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made a very candid point at a John McCain rally in Ohio. He said McCain spent more time as a prisoner of war than Barack Obama has spent in the U.S. Senate. Schwarzenegger made this point to highlight McCain's unique experiences and long preparation to be president of the U.


Catcher Rafael Neda earned four All-American honors last season. Head coach Ray Birmingham said there wasn't a learning curve for Neda, and he expects the sophomore to improve on last year's success.

Rafael Neda is the future of the UNM baseball team. The sophomore is a native of Obregon, Mexico, where he grew up playing baseball. "I had great coaches when I was younger," he said. "And I think that helped for my love of baseball." Neda, the right-handed catcher for the Lobos, played high-school ball at Amphitheater High in Tucson, Ariz.

The truth is we are already a fair ways down that road. About 11.8 million illegal immigrants are estimated to live in the United States, an increase from the 8.5 million estimated in 2000, according to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have said the country's immigration system needs to be improved.



Defensive tackle Wesley Beck got emotional in the locker room after UNM lost 13-10 to No. 9 Utah. Wesley, a senior, has compiled 97 career tackles after walking on in 2006.

Senior tackle looks back on his years at the line

Since walking on, senior nose tackle Wesley Beck has been noted for his gridiron smarts. After all, football runs in his family - Beck's father, Curlin, played tailback at West Virginia from 1979-82. Senior defensive tackle Jeremiah Lovato, who has been Beck's roommate for three years, said he will remember Beck's intelligence.

Utah keeps UNM from victory in close game

All the sideline towel-twirling ended up being nothing more than a formality, as the UNM football team was gut-checked 13-10 by the No. 9 Utah Utes on Saturday in its home finale. On a night where upset brewed like a cup of coffee, the difference was a blocked field goal.

Professor awarded for helping abuse victims

UNM professor Renee Ornelas will receive a Distinguished Public Service Award for her work with victims of sexual abuse. Ornelas, who teaches at the UNM Health Sciences Center, is the director of Para Los Niños. The program provides medical care for children who have been sexually abused and follows up with teenagers who have been sexually assaulted.

Bond C gives $28M to UNM health facilities

Voters have to weed through the major-party candidates and nonpartisan judges before they get to the general obligation bonds on the ballot. Bond C will distribute more than $57 million to health-related facilities for construction and expansion. About $28 million of the bond funds would benefit UNM.
