UNM tackles statewide childhood well-being problems

New Mexico ranks 49th in childhood well-being, a position that remains unchanged since last year, according to results from the NM Kids are Counting On Us Campaign. The profile is compiled based on the national KIDS COUNT Data Book which organizes data by four domains; Economic Well-Being, Education, Health and Family and Community, which are then broken down into 16 sub-indicators found in local research.

Process allocating student fees begins this week

The Student Fee Review Board has begun its 2016-17 application process, allowing organizations and resources who serve UNM students to apply for a piece of the student activity fee pie.  Delia Brennan, an undergraduate voting member on the SFRB, said the board allocates millions of dollars in student fees to different units on campus.

UNM ranked among top universities worldwide

This year, the University of New Mexico has been ranked among the top 1,000 colleges in the world by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). According to its website, the CWUR considers more than 25,000 institutions of higher learning worldwide in its ranking, “making it the largest academic ranking of global universities.”

Ride and Drive event showcases electric vehicles

UNM made a move towards the future this week as the University hosted its first ever electric and hybrid car show, "Ride and Drive." The event took place last Friday afternoon at the southeast corner of Yale Boulevard and Lomas Boulevard as UNM students, staff, and local citizens took turns test driving the latest electric vehicles provided by Albuquerque dealerships.

Office of Equal Opportunity begins training to combat sexual assault

UNM's Office of Equal Opportunity begins advocacy training this week in order to step up efforts to combat assault on campus, as well as a negative reputation. Training aims to improve sexual assault and discrimination prevention, focusing specifically on advocacy. Advocacy training reminds trainees to respect confidentiality and seeks to make the investigation process clearer for everyone involved.

Albuquerque businesses embracing Pokémon Go craze

Pokémon Go encourages players to visit local landmarks to complete in-game activities like stocking up on pokeballs or battling to claim a gym, and some businesses are using discounts or in-app features to bring the visitors in their parking lot and the building. “It kind of shocked me to see how this blew up overnight. I think it kind of shocked everybody, but we knew we had to capitalize on it right away,” said Colten Hudson, general manager of Gravity Park.

Several University departments and positions are under review as a result of the Board of Regents' decision in March to restructure the Health Sciences Center so that it falls under the control of the University's main campus administration.

UNM honors alumna by breaking new and historic ground

The Hodgin Hall Patio is undergoing its second phase of renovation which, once completed, will honor Karen Abraham, who retired last year after 45 years of service to UNM. The Alumni Association has chosen to commemorate Abraham, who was associate vice president of the Alumni Relations Office as well as executive director of the Alumni Association.

UNM student assists low-income students with Wiki page

Applying to graduate school as a low-income student can be a daunting task, and even once they are there, those from low-income backgrounds often face social-cultural isolation and economic barriers. To educate and assist low-income students, Karra Shimabukuro, a doctoral candidate in the English Department, created a Wiki page where students can learn tips for applying to and enduring graduate school: "How to Prep for Grad School While Poor."
