After a pickup game of basketball one afternoon, UNM student Marcus Bustos' life was changed forever. He was sore and weak after the game, and the pain didn't fade. He visited a doctor and had blood work done. The spring of his freshman year, Bustos was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

More than 100 T-shirts designed to tell the stories of domestic violence victims were displayed Thursday at North Campus for Sexual Assault Awareness Week. The T-shirts were part of the Clothesline Project, which started in 1990. Margie Lang, deputy director of the Governor's Office of Victim Advocacy, said the project was made so people could see the prevalence of violence against women.
Students from around the world shared their culture, customs and cuisine with the UNM community on Thursday. The Office of International Programs and Studies held its annual International Festival and Study Abroad Fair at Cornell Mall. April 3 A UNM Police officer was dispatched to the Children's Psychiatric Center after a patient's family member threatened a receptionist. The receptionist said she told the patient's family they had an appointment at 8 a.m., and if they were more than 20 minutes late, they would have to reschedule.
The Board of Regents approved a 3 percent increase in faculty pay last week, but the Faculty Senate said that's not enough. The organization asked the regents in February for a 6 percent increase, which would make faculty compensation competitive with peer institutions, said Jacqueline Hood, president of the Faculty Senate.
If Aramark employees want to continue working at UNM, they will need to apply to the new food-service company. About 200 food-service employees can stay and work for Chartwells or relocate to another location served by Aramark. In March, the Board of Regents unanimously voted to give the University's food-service contract to Chartwells, choosing not to renew an eight-year contract with Aramark.
State imposes restrictions in face of high fire danger SANTA FE (AP) - The state is putting restrictions on campfires, open fires, smoking and fireworks in 23 of New Mexico's 33 counties starting Friday. Restrictions are being imposed because of high winds, low humidity and low precipitation that have increased fire danger across the state.
President David Schmidly discussed the future of UNM during a Web cast Tuesday. Students, staff and faculty tuned in and watched the Web cast around campus. About 15 people watched the Web cast in the SUB Theater. Schmidly said UNM must become a role model for higher education.
When Martha Bedard took over as dean of University Libraries a year ago, one of her goals was to extend the hours of UNM's libraries. She's one step closer thanks to a $200,000 allocation in the budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year. Bedard said getting funding is the first step in the process.
