The violin is a piece of New Mexican history brought to the state by Franciscan priests. And for years, the art of violin making and playing flourished in the state. "In New Mexico, we used to have a tremendous tradition of violin making," said Peter White, professor of American Studies at UNM.

Clinton leads Obama by 117 votes in NM

As New Mexico's polling results dwindled in early Wednesday, there was still no clear winner for the state's Democratic caucus. Sen. Hillary Clinton led Sen. Barack Obama by just 117 votes with 98 percent of precincts reporting by 1 a.m. Clinton had 65,845 of the votes, while Obama had 65,728.

House creates Health Care Authority SANTA FE (AP) - The state House passed a bill that supporters say is the framework for reforming New Mexico's health care system. The legislation created an 11-member Health Care Authority. Lobo 3-pointers decimate Rams

The UNM men's basketball team caught fire from 3-point range as the Lobos cruised to their biggest conference win in 11 years. UNM bounced back from a two-game losing streak, crushing the Rams 91-51 Tuesday at The Pit. Lobo forward J.R. Giddens said the game was a must-win.

Rio Arriba county declared disaster area SANTA FE - Gov. Bill Richardson has declared Rio Arriba County a disaster area due to heavy snow that has blocked roads and left residents stranded in their homes. The battle for Super Tuesday is in full swing at UNM, and students are playing a major role in the fight for New Mexico's Democratic caucus. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York was in Albuquerque on Saturday to campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. She spoke to a crowd of about 2,800 people at Highland High School for about 30 minutes. "I said at the last debate it took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush," she said.

Fair aims to suit up students for jobs

Career Services will host a job fair in the SUB on Tuesday. This year's job fair will be the largest UNM has hosted, said Jenna Crabb, director of Career Services. More than 120 employers are attending, she said. "It's awesome. I mean, this is our largest event," Crabb said.

Mike Chavez has owned a janitorial service in Albuquerque for more than three decades. "I've been in business for 35 years," he said, "and the last eight years have been terrible." Chavez said that if the down cycle in the economy continues, he will have to go out of business.
