Staff Report A $650,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration may prove to be a shot in the arm for the UNM College of Nursing - and for New Mexico's health care system. The funds were granted to the college and will be used to recruit and retain nursing students throughout the state using Web-based courses, according to a Health Sciences Center news release.
Richardson proposal could cut benefits SANTA FE (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson's administration outlined proposals Monday to save more than $40 million on Medicaid next year, mostly by cutting benefits, payments to providers and some eligibility restrictions.
Darlene Lucero, associate registrar, said there has been a significant increase in the amount of courses that charge special fees at UNM over the past few years. Lucero said this semester there are 1,123 University courses that have additional fees students must pay, and it's becoming a trend among University departments to implement fees for all their classes.

Police have arrested two suspects in relation to an attack last month in the University area that left a UNM senior clinging to life. The U.S. Senate approved an amendment 50-45 Wednesday that will keep the Bush administration from altering the federal student financial aid formula. The proposed revisions to the U.S. Department of Education's formula would reduce the amount of money the federal government doles out for college by $270 million next year and could affect up to 100,000 students nationwide.

State Fire, vandalism damage Head Start buildings SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP) - A Navajo Head Start program's administrative office and other facilities were completely gutted in a weekend fire, agency officials said. It was the second time in a week the agency had seen damage to its property.
Although campus police and University security constitutes most of UNM's safety force, there is a small group of students standing ready to do their part to make the community safe. That group is the UNM Student Patrol and this is its eighth year of working to provide late-night escorts and lending a hand to assist UNM police and campus security.

A part-time instructor in the UNM Communication and Journalism department said the National Fire Protection Association is not doing enough to enforce its fire prevention policies, making it possible for fires such as those at nightclubs on the East Coast to happen again.
