Obama's stimulus plan won't benefit people on Main Street

Editor, After numerous months of attempted interpretation, I finally realized what President Obama meant by his campaign slogans "hope" and "change." I heard a professor on TV on Tuesday talking about how the recent stimulus package is exactly what America needs and that, as a result, change is on the way.

Professors must allow sick days to students with flu symptoms

Editor, Many of us are deeply concerned about the welfare of this country's health - especially with the arrival of the new strain of flu: H1N1 (swine flu). I am very concerned about my fellow students. Professors, please give students the time off and chance to retake exams if students are presenting symptoms or have been exposed to the flu virus without red tape and superfluous hoop jumping.

Daily Lobo continues to publish biased articles against Israel

Editor, Once again, the Daily Lobo gives a stage to an anti-Israeli propagandistic article where journalist Ziad Abbas and his faculty friends in UNM attack and blame Israel for the Palestinian suffering. Like many articles of its kind, it is full with common lies and disguised by comments of professors.

Allowing firearms on campus could lead to confusion, chaos

Editor, This letter is in response to Austin Burke's letter titled "Allowing concealed firearms could thwart school shooting." Let me get to the point: Where is this school shooting? You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than shot on a college campus, so do you recommend no one leaving the house when it is cloudy? Weapons-safety training and being a police officer are not even close.

Men need to let go of power, accept inferiority to women

Editor, In response to Tuesday's article, "Study: Female professors earn less than males," I suggest our phallic powerhouse needs a slice of castration. I was dismayed to find that, according to the most recent information available from Zimmerman Library, the five highest-paid faculty member in the English department are all men, even though more than half the department is female.

Those suffering from depression should seek professional help

Editor, Thank you Daily Lobo for your timely Ask Dr. Peg column on depression. As a person who has suffered from severe depression for many years and has helped several friends and students through these dark periods, I want to add to the information in the article.

Obama must act courageously keep his campaign promises

Editor, It is refreshing to see this country finally - after eight endless catastrophic years - represented by an intelligent face, a face that beams of common sense because it is enlightened by a basic sense of justice. The final vindication came with President Obama's coronation.

Research nuclear energy issue yourself before forming opinion

Editor, I appreciate the Daily Lobo for covering an issue that reflects New Mexico's involvement in alternative energy. I believe everyone should research the issue of nuclear energy independently and draw their own conclusions, but I would like to submit some information for the readers' review.

Daily Lobo should be applauded for covering overlooked issues

Editor, I want to commend you and thank you for putting two very important articles on the front page of the Daily Lobo on Monday. It is extremely important that Darfur stays on our minds and hearts and that it is not forgotten, ignored or downplayed. Page One articles to remind us and update us are a vital service.

Obama needs to focus on US instead of bowing to others

Editor, I have had it with President Obama and the slow decay of the American republic. Obama's conduct on his recent trip overseas has convinced me that he is not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.

Allowing concealed firearms could thwart school shooting

Editor, Using students to assist the UNM Police Department in keeping track of the school is an excellent idea, and the idea raises another idea in my mind - one that may inflame the sentiments of many students on campus. Campus shootings invariably happen in areas that are referred to as gun-free zones.

Student, not Afghan group, deserves criticism for actions

Editor, I wrote the letter published last week on the previous Sunday thinking certain things had happened, and I was harsh with the Afghan student group and OIPS. Monday, I talked to Stephanie at OIPS, and she investigated the matter. I had jumped to a wrong conclusion based on the disturbing things that were said.

Allowing concealed weapons won't make University safer

Editor, In the April 23 letter, Jean Aragon states that UNM Police being issued AR-15s is a step in the right direction, but is merely "a Band-Aid on a bullet wound." Aragon argues further that the real solution to campus violence is that persons with a concealed-carry weapon permit be allowed their arms on campus.

UNM needs bigger rec center with up-to-date equipment

Editor, I am writing this letter in response to numerous published editorials perpetuating the spread of misinformation on campus regarding the building of another recreation center. As it currently stands, Johnson Center is inadequate for just about any form of physical exercise outside of basketball.

Correction

In printing the results of the April 13-20 poll asking if you supported UNM building another recreation center, the results were flipped. The results should have read 71 percent said no and 29 percent said yes. The error was made in layout.

Concealed firearm carriers make for safer environment

Editor, In response to Jean Aragon's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, I could not agree more, and I would like to commend Aragon. The fact of the matter is, if there were an active shooter on campus, it would take precious minutes to notify the police and even more time for them to respond.
