With sports, the media heed your demands

I considered the logic in Vanessa Strobbe's column Tuesday about why the media fail to provide adequate coverage of "secondary" sports. I allowed it to stew, and I came to a conclusion: This isn't a chicken-or-egg question. When it boils down to it, it is a question of dollars and cents.

Voting for lesser of two evils won't change U.S. politics

Editor, This letter is in response to Kyle Farris' letter in Tuesday's edition of the Daily Lobo. The problem with young voters, and voters in general, is not everyone who is eligible to vote does, and voters accept the two-party system by voting for the lesser of the two evils.

Don't let November's election turn into a beauty pageant

Editor, I would like to draw attention to the latest media frenzy of Sarah Palin. Why on earth are we letting the presidential campaign become a vice presidential campaign? The latest polls show John McCain has sneaked ahead by four points, and for what reason? Palin.

Palin's mix of politics, religion makes her a dangerous leader

Editor, I appreciate Jacqueline Ritchie's comments about Gov. Sarah Palin, and I wanted to add something she did not mention. Palin supports teaching creationism in schools and is pro drilling for oil in sensitive ecosystems such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Single-issue voting for abortion means compromising on all else

Editor, As a graduate of UNM, I often like to revisit the opinion pages of the Daily Lobo Web site to get a sense of the politics on campus. I did so today, and the irony of the running discussion is inescapable. The prevailing topic in a string of letters to the editor is abortion, closely seconded by Sen.

Two-party system forces voters to choose lesser evil

Editor, This letter is in response to Michelle Obama's letter printed in the Sept. 6 edition of the Daily Lobo. I'll preface this by saying I am a registered Democrat and a sophomore here at UNM who fully intends to vote in the upcoming election. I found many of the things Obama said to be moving and something of an eye opener for me.

Open any sports section of the Albuquerque Journal, and on that front page, almost always, you will find a headline on Lobo football or basketball. Turn a few more pages, and you will find a "quick hit" on UNM volleyball, skiing, softball, tennis or a rare track blurb.

Food Not Bombs embodies peace through having fun

Editor, As a member of Albuquerque's Food Not Bombs, I was sad to see an inaccurate article about us on the day we were sharing our healthy, fresh and hearty free meal near campus. I'd like to invite students to come check out our work and attitudes for themselves.

Palin scours for Hillary's table scraps

Ding, ding, ding. In this corner, we have the junior Sen. Barack "I'll take the high road" Obama and Joe "everyone needs an attack dog" Biden. In the other corner, we have senior senator and, lest we forget, former prisoner of war John "grampy" McCain and Alaskan Governor, moose-hunter and mother of five, Sarah Louise Palin.

Obama unqualified for office; McCain lesser of two evils

Editor, I will admit my Aug. 18 anti-Obama letter to the Daily Lobo was superficially worded, and I've reconsidered my political stance a few times since reading the aggressive responses I've received from it. During the initial stages of this presidential race, Obama appealed to me much more than John McCain because his motto is "Change we can believe in.

Media corrupt minds capable of committing violence, murder

Editor, One of my most painful, hazy early childhood memories makes me especially aware of how violent I, or anyone else, can be. I was about 5 years old and in the midst of a temper tantrum when I went to the pantry in our Illinois farm home, and I got a large butcher's knife to frighten, threaten or harm my mother.

Reporters, protesters stripped of their rights at convention

Editor, A protester was arrested Monday heading from the Republican National Convention to the protest outside of the convention center. Her crime? Entering a restricted area between the convention center and the protest area. Why should this action offend citizens of the U.

Column: Vote for the world you want to see

When I was a kid, my father volunteered as a precinct captain for the Democratic Party in our neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago.ˇSome of my earliest memories are of tagging along as he went from door to door.ˇHe registered people to vote.ˇIf our neighbors needed absentee ballots, he arranged it.

Abortion may be immoral, but it's a woman's right to choose

Editor, I am writing in response to Benjamin Sanchez's letter on Friday. It seems he is very confused with Sen. Barack Obama's stance on abortion. Fortunately, since I seem to share the same stance, I can shed some light on it. We should all know the old argument that states a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body.

Palin represents same misogyny McCain's campaign espouses

Editor, It's nice to see the Republican Party finally discovered that 51 percent of this country is made up of women, 88 years after women were given the right to vote. I think we all know why it is only now that they have joined the 21st century. It's clear the primary reason the Republican Party chose a woman is because they believe they can pick up all of those disgruntled Hillary Clinton voters we keep hearing about.

Supporting abortion rights not same as being pro-abortion

Editor, I am writing in response to Benjamin Sanchez's letter on Friday about Barack Obama, in which he suggested the senator's position on abortion is "not clear or consistent." The heart of Sanchez's argument relies on the flawed assumption that "pro-choice" is the same as being "pro-abortion.
