United Nations' diplomacy not effective in Myanmar

Editor, The United Nations has been diplomatically trying to persuade Myanmar leaders for a long time. They tried by sending envoys. They talked with beautiful diplomatic words, but people have already known in advance that they cannot realistically hope for anything before the U.

Protesting gas prices sends urgent message

Editor, Hello, my name is Jeremy. I'm a 23-year-old communication student from Central Connecticut State University. I'm e-mailing students and faculty all across the United States in hopes of setting up a nationwide gas strike June 17 and 18. The gas prices are gouging the pockets of millions of hardworking Americans, worst of which are the middle class and working poor.

Editorial: Clinton's campaign leaves mixed legacy

And it's all over. After a grueling year of the Democratic presidential primary, Sen. Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race June 7, days after Sen. Barack Obama earned enough delegates to become the party's nominee. And now that Clinton's bid has come to an end, we are left to speculate on the legacy of the first female presidential candidate with a chance at winning.

Middle East groups need to find resolution, forgiveness

Editor, This letter is in response to the multitude of columns and letters on the Middle East this semester in the Daily Lobo. I am neither a Jew nor a Muslim by birth, nor do I have much understanding about the issues in the Middle East. Yet, I have fragmentary glimpses of the pain of the people in this area.

Veterans group important in easing college transition

Editor, I'd like to thank the Daily Lobo and reporter Maggie Ybarra for her May 8 story about the creation of a student organization for military veterans. As the president of the Student Veterans of UNM, I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce the organization to the University community.

There is no easy solution to Israel's national woes

Editor, I read Santhosh Chandrashekar's recent column and I'm intrigued to learn more about the origins of his interest in Israel. Why on Israel's Independence Day do you find the issue of Nakba to be salient over other issues? Taking India as an example, do you find Aug.

Israel has the right to exist just like all other countries

Editor, Israel is a legally established nation under international law, established under conditions similar to those of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and several other Middle Eastern nations, whose right to exist are not at all disputed. Israel's right to exist has been disputed since the beginning, and the establishment of Israel was controversial simply because it was a Jewish state.

Gun incident just a way of getting people's attention

Editor, I've known Kevin Boyar for two years. He collects guns like thousands of people - including me - across America do. He was stupid and brought a gun to school and, therefore, should be punished according to the law. What is unacceptable, and there is plenty that is unacceptable, is that now not only does he and his family have to pay in time and money for his mistake but also become the target of the fanaticism of people here.

History proves Muslims, Jews can coexist in peace

Editor, In a recent letter, Mae Eye stated an incorrect quote from Quran: "So, when you clash with the unbelieving infidels in battle, smite their necks until you overpower them, killing and wounding many of them. Thus you are commanded by Allah to continue carrying out Jihad against the unbelieving infidels until they submit to Islam.

Coverage of gun incident lacks relevant information

Editor, I live in the Student Residence Center, and I like to take a nap in the little time I have between studying and having a little fun before finals. I must say I slept through most of the gun incident and its aftermath. I was in that Greek mythology class and wondered why a student would be called out by the police standing just barely out of sight.

Radical Islam a big factor in Arabs' hatred of Jews

Editor, Two thousand years after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the Balfour Declaration of independence for a national home for the Jewish people in 1948 gave back what the Romans had taken away. The only Jewish state in the world became a reality.

It's shameful to celebrate discrimination, segregation

Editor, This is in response to Josh Hasten's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. Since Judaism is generally passed on through the mother, let's consider Judaism, for the most part, to be a biological trait, which people have no control over, similar to race.

Professor's resignation a blight upon University

Editor, Sharon Warner's resignation is a stunning blow not just to the English Department but the entire University. As a former Daily Lobo editor, a graduate of the creative writing program and current MFA student at Sarah Lawrence College, this news disturbs me immensely.

Gaps in U.S.-Mexico fence favor rich, well-connected

Editor, I heard in the news media about the national security fence that will separate the U.S. from Mexico. If this fence is supposed to be for the good of our country, why haven't we started building one across our northern border to separate us from Canada? After all, what's good for the goose should be good for the gander.
