Stem cell research is a hot issue wrapped up in an ethical war. Although ethics play a role in the debate, it is important to consider other dimensions. Stem cell research means so much more to the U.S. than a religious debate - it means economic potential, scientific advancement and, potentially, the end to many serious diseases.

Editor, In 2001, $5.27 billion was paid to defendants in class-action lawsuits. This is only .06 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product. Wal-Mart's profits alone were $11 billion in 2001, and we are supposed to believe class-action lawsuits are killing American business.
Editor, In her column Monday, Daily Lobo columnist Whitney J. Davis attacked lawyers and people engaged in class action litigation by claiming that they are "money-hungry people looking for a quick dollar." One of Davis' main examples was the class action suit filed against tobacco companies for the harmful health effects caused by tobacco.
Editor, I am writing in response to an article about Dionne Marsh, who plays for the Lobo women's basketball team, that appeared in Monday's Daily Lobo. In it, Marsh is not only praised as a member of the team, but also portrayed as though she were the only member.
Editor, I read Whitney J. Davis' column about lawsuits Monday with dismay. Her opinion contains several errors that warrant some clarification. First, class action and product liability doctrines are not the same thing, and they are designed to have different social outcomes.
Editor, Almost all the communities I have learned about through my studies at UNM have a way to honor loved ones who have passed on from this world. On Monday, the Daily Lobo published information about the border consortium based on interviews with key University administrators, such as Associate Vice President for Strategic Projects Frank Gilfeather.
Editor, I find the state of our society not only perturbing, but also disturbing because of ridiculous warning labels. When in order for the manufacturer to avoid lawsuits, a knee guard has the warning, "This device will not protect any part of the body it is not covering," and an iron has the warning, "Never iron clothes while you are wearing them," something is wrong.
There's something neat about streetcars.
I would like to respond to Rhian Hibner's column in the Nov. 2 Daily Lobo regarding gaming. The argument that today's games and game developers are only interested in graphics is completely off base. I don't pretend to know Hibner's credentials as an industry analyst, but as a former employee of NC Soft, I can say with confidence that he is completely out of touch with the industry.
Editor, I agree that drunken driving is a huge problem in New Mexico and that something needs to be done. I do not, however, agree that the ignition interlock system is the best way to solve our drunken driving problems. What's to stop someone from having a friend start a car for him or her? Most drunken drivers don't get caught now, so why would anyone think they would get caught having sober friends start their cars? This leads to an obvious question that I know someone is bound to ask - if the friend is sober, why wouldn't he or she just drive the drunk friend home? The answer is, because people don't think, and sometimes they make very stupid decisions.
