Column: The fall of man was caused by men

In the beginning, a woman supposedly cast humanity out of Paradise because of her disobedience to God. The misogynistic distortion and sexist slant that permeates our history in religion, politics and society still define our culture to this day. Another religious example of this would be the story of Mary Magdalene, who was actually the "Apostle of the Apostles" - a founder of the Christian religion, yet many today still believe she was a prostitute, a story created by Pope Gregory in 591.

Letter: People forget that sex and procreation are connected

The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court stated that under the principle of the right to privacy, a woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy. With this decision, a woman who is pregnant has three options: keep the child, give the child up for adoption or have an abortion.

Letter: Traffic signs to Popejoy confusing, ineffective

Never having seen or read your paper, I have no way of knowing whether you have any concern in printing this type of public interest letter. I am sending you this letter in the hope that you can publish it and help your readers get an idea of what some people think about the conduct of UNM's campus, and some of the slip-shod ways public events are being handled.

Letter: Right not to be offended compromises all rights

Of all the rights that we as citizens of the United States have, the right not to be offended is not among them. This is for good reason - just about everything offends someone in some fashion. Such a right would restrict every other right we have.

Letter: Oberst just as guilty of double standards as paper

I would like to enlighten Joachim Oberst on the principles of free speech as well as the idea of a privately owned and operated media outlet. It seems like he favors state-sanctioned media that reports the party line, or only speech that has been sterilized to nothing.

Letter: Misused buzzwords not enlightening anybody

Joachim Oberst should be ashamed at his attempt to "enlighten" us regarding freedom of speech with obscure references to pornography critics and tossing around overused and often misunderstood buzzwords such as fascism and anti-Semitism.

Letter: Body image articles should focus on managing vanity

I am writing regarding Jessica Del Curto's series of articles on body image in the Daily Lobo the week before Spring Break. It would seem that the theme she's advocating was one of stasis - each installment continuously cast a bad light on anyone who went out and changed the way they looked.

Letter: Patrick Henry fought for liberty, not for empire

It was 231 years ago today that Patrick Henry said, "Give me liberty, or give me death." Most Americans know him as a passionate defender of liberty, but did you know he was anti-empire? The title of his speech, "Should Empire or Liberty Be Sought?" gives you a clue.

Letter: U.S. should be objective with policies toward Israel

It is beginning to seem that Israel does not want to make peace with the volatile Hamas leadership, based on the assault on a prison in Jericho by Israeli forces last week and other recent events. It is interesting that few Americans know Israel once actively promoted the formation of Hamas to counter the secular Fatah party.

Letter: City councilors shouldn't ignore public comments

I attended my first City Council meeting on March 6. I was eager to see government in action and all those other naive ideas. While I'm sure that the City Council is responsible for many good things, I was appalled to witness firsthand evidence of the chief complaint of most people regarding government - namely, that it is completely out of touch with the people that it is supposed to represent.

Column: Fart, cry for your health

Come with me to the dark side of the garden. Vegetables have a dark side. Most people don't eat enough vegetables, and perhaps there are some good reasons why. These nutritious foods can have unpleasant side effects - tears, stinky urine and flatulence, just to name a few.
