Letter: Arafat's peace-keeping endeavors overlooked

Editor, I chose this topic to mark the remembrance of a great man that we lost a year ago this month: Yasser Arafat. Yasser Arafat was simply a man who fought for freedom of his people. He was a freedom fighter, a liberator, a peacemaker and a man of integrity.

Letter: Unlike student groups, zealots get free security

Editor, Several weeks ago and again on Wednesday, "religious Christians" - zealots - came to campus and harassed UNM students by calling us sinners and telling us we are all going to hell. Questions regarding freedom of speech and the legitimacy of the event itself aside, I believe this event demonstrates one serious flaw in UNM policy that both insults the hard work of UNM student organizations and provides unfair support from the UNM Police Department to zealous religious groups that come to visit campus.

Letter: Want true Christianity? Talk to the man in red

Editor, I have been keeping up with the articles and editorials about the radical preachers around campus. I sat down in the Student Union Building to read the editorial page as usual, when I came across Joseph Basso's letter. He said he is willing to answer any questions people have about Christianity without assaulting them.

Column: Greed will be oil's demise

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist Why should we be surprised to learn about the oil shortage that is starting to hit this generation? If we combine our over-consumptive lifestyles with the fact that we have cut down entire landscapes of forests to suit our needs and wants, then why can't we also achieve in depleting oil? Don't we use our waterways to carry away our trash, causing people downstream to get sick and the fish to disappear or act abnormal? What makes us think we would treat the oil supply any differently? Running out of oil is just another example of how our lifestyles are catching up to us.

Letter: Clashes with preachers show need for open forum

Editor, I was there Wednesday when the preachers took the pulpit and began their preaching - again. I am a Christian and am open about my faith, but what I heard coming from the mouth of one of the preachers saddened and angered me. I, first of all, wish to tell the student body and faculty that this is not the correct representation of the Jesus of the Bible.

Column: Immaculate contraception

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist So much for being a little pregnant, as if that was ever possible anyway - now there's such a thing as being a lot pregnant. I was perusing the Health Channel when I stumbled upon the story of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, proudly pregnant with their 15th - you read it right, their 15th - child.

Letter: Troops shouldn't pull out until Iraq is secure, free

Editor, With the U.S. military's death toll in Iraq rising to more than 2,000, I find myself reading articles stating we need to pull out and bring our troops home. We need to remember these people out there have never known freedom - they have had a dictator running their government for years and years.

Letter: Convenience is the key to effective recycling program

Editor, I write in hopes of alerting people to the current state of recycling on campus. Traveling from class to class, it's hard not to notice how few options there are on what to do with garbage. Although our campus is in most places fairly clean, there's a constant problem of litter around bus stations and newspaper kiosks.

Letter: An unhealthy lifestyle isn't always a choice

Editor, Mark Erasmus erroneously believes if people are denied universal health care, they will probably adhere to healthy lifestyles. Right-wing politicians in other countries echoed this attitude before those states initiated universal health care. The New York City Public Health Association coordinated a study a few years ago focusing on other countries' universal health care systems and discovered poor people heavily utilized the free health services at first, but the numbers decreased as their health status improved, indicating they probably had been following wise health behaviors before these services were available and their wellness depended on more than just healthy behavior.

Letter: Actions of WWII cannot be compared to Iraq war

Editor, I am writing in response to Darren Wood's letter that appeared in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, "Sometimes conquest is the only way to freedom." He compared America's actions in World War II to the preventive war strategy of the Bush administration. His analogy is incorrect.

Letter: Free health care system promotes responsibility

Editor, I would like to clear up several damaging misconceptions reported in Wednesday's letter to the editor by Mark Erasmus titled "Universal health care plan supports unhealthy habits." I strongly suggest that one does some research before writing a letter to the editor so that objective data is used, as opposed to biased opinion claiming to represent the consensus of the American people.

Letter: Honor Veterans' courage to defend U.S. freedoms

Editor, I ask my fellow students and Americans that we all take the time to thank those who have served in the nation's military this Veterans Day. Walk up to a veteran and say thank you. By saying thank you, we acknowledge that this life we lead and the freedoms we enjoy did not come cheaply or easily.

Letter: Lobo football team must tackle problems to win

Editor, This year, the UNM football team has failed to live up to its fans and its own preseason expectations. The Lobos, who are 5-4 and 3-3 in the Mountain West Conference - and tied for fourth place in the MWC, go to Salt Lake City this weekend to face the other fourth-place team in the conference, the Utah Utes, in a game that could decide the postseason fates of both teams.

Letter: Senate budget must not resort to drilling in Alaska

Editor, Thursday, the Senate declined a budget reconciliation amendment that would stop the prospect of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil companies are now one step closer to turning the last pristine coastline of Alaska into just another oil field.

Letter: Universal health care plan supports unhealthy habits

Editor, In response to the Progressive Solutions opinion column "Ensuring the uninsured" in Monday's Daily Lobo, Colin Donoghue describes in his first paragraph how he should give up drinking and smoking because he does not have health insurance. This is the exact reason why we need to stay away from his progressive solutions.

Letter: Discussion of faith should consider humanist view

Editor, I agree with many of Bhavana Upadhyaya's sentiments in the letter from Tuesday's Daily Lobo, "Civilized forum needed to discuss religion at UNM." However, the author seems to focus on discussions between people of different faiths, implying that the differences between religions are the main issue.

Letter: Sometimes conquest is the only way to freedom

Editor, I wish to respond to Cynthia Winland's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about this nation's history of bungling the idea of spreading freedom and democracy. My heart fell to the floor when she stated, "Military conquest has never spread the seeds of freedom.

Column: Building blocks of obesity

by Samara Alpern Daily lobo columnist We are fat - and we are getting fatter. Taking a quick glance around Tingley Coliseum at the Def Leppard concert last week, it was hard to believe New Mexico is one of the 15 trimmest states in the country - take that, sixth-fattest Texas.
