Letter: Wasting money, energy on needless luxuries

Editor, Our president - a former oil company CEO, a man who once said the United States needed an energy bill that encourages consumption, a man whose vice president is also a former CEO of an energy company - is now begging the American public to conserve electricity, carpool, use public transportation and not travel at all.

Letter: Faculty leaves because funds go to administrators

Editor, Regarding the story in Monday's Daily Lobo on the flight of faculty from UNM, Provost Reed Dasenbrock stated that UNM cannot afford to pay upper-level faculty the six-figure salaries that other institutions can. Why, then, are we able to pay six-figure salaries to a growing number of administrators like himself? I guess these people are more important to the University than a top-notch physicist or historian.

Column: A smarter use of money

by Andrew Price Daily Lobo columnist Good news. New Mexico is ranked No. 48 on the smartest states list for 2005 - in 2004 we were dead last - according to the Morgan Quinto Press, which specializes in state and city ranking publications. The New Mexico State Treasurer has just been indicted for extortion.

Column: Effect of Red Bull is bull

by Samara Alpern Daily Lobo columnist Whether you're facing a boatload of homework, a double shift at work or just a plain old boring life, nothing gives you cracked-out vigor like a Red Bull. Sure, it may taste like medicine, but that's how you know it works, right? The Red Bull we are familiar with is an Austrian version of a Thai energy drink.

Letter: Extremists' actions don't represent Islam

Editor, In response to Tom Woodard's letter headlined, "Time has come for Muslims to unite against violence" in Tuesday's Daily Lobo: It is absurd to make the claim that the actions of the lunatic fringe of the Muslim world embody Islamic teachings. Such extremists or radicals are by definition not representative of the totality.

Letter: Interpreting Quran a dangerous step to take

Editor, This letter is in response to Tom Woodard's letter in last Tuesday's Daily Lobo. In his letter, Woodard brought up some of his interpretations of the Quran, the Muslim holy book. One must remember that the misinterpretation of Holy Scriptures has led to the deaths of many in the past and present.

Letter: CIRT concerns unfounded; Facebook protects users

Editor, I read the Daily Lobo's article Wednesday about CIRT blocking access to Facebook.com from the UNM network. I would like to say that CIRT's argument against Facebook has to be the worst argument I've heard in a long while. CIRT worries that students who use Facebook are required to use their UNM net ID to register with Facebook, and additionally they express concern that this could lead to identity theft and stalking.

Letter: Knockoff sites pose risk to security, not Facebook

Editor, The article in Wednesday's Daily Lobo headlined "CIRT blocks access to Facebook.com" reiterates the University's policy of doing whatever it wants and then making up reasons that have no grounding in reality. The reasons given for blocking the site are all founded on a false correlation between the UNM Facebook and the original Facebook or on untruths about unsolicited e-mail.

Letter: CIRT's irrationality shows disrespect for students

Editor, The out-of-the-blue decision to unilaterally block Facebook.com as a first response to concerns about it without an open and transparent process is an inexcusable violation of basic respect for students at UNM. The few cryptic excuses given are illogical and fall apart under minor scrutiny.

Letter: Students should learn to live without Facebook

Editor, Isn't it interesting that the Daily Lobo had to do a cover story on Facebook.com being blocked through UNM connections? The fact that people are seriously complaining about this site being down is, frankly, a little scary. I suppose we will all need to revert to the old ways of communicating with fellow students in class by - oh, my - actually talking with them, getting their numbers, and, God forbid, getting their online messenger screen name.

Letter: Homecoming shouldn't have priority over world disasters

Editor, It was indeed sad for me to come to school on Monday and see what the story on the cover page of the Daily Lobo was. I find it depressing that the priorities of some of the members of the UNM community lay more on the tests and difficulties of the Homecoming events and not in the more than 20,000 people who died in Pakistan this weekend or the hundreds who were buried alive in the mudslide in Guatemala.

Column: Pollution linked to illness

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist Many different cultures have adopted the belief that the environment is an extension of who we are as a people. Never does this type of relationship ring more true than when we compare environmental pollution with the pollution we carry in our bodies - when we pollute the environment we are ultimately polluting ourselves.

Letter: U.S. Constitution doesn't license absolute liberty

Editor, I read an article saying that Southwest Airlines asked a passenger to cover up or turn inside out a shirt with profanities about the president and vice president. Various groups - who obviously have no idea about the meaning of the American Constitution - raised the usual arguments of free speech.

Letter: Forgetting Afghanistan a recipe for disaster

Many political commentators bemoan the lack of coverage of the cost of the war in Iraq, even as the number of American soldiers killed there inexorably approaches 2,000 - one writer this week even compared the level of public awareness of the Iraq war to that of the "forgotten" Korean War.

Letter: CIRT must explain why Facebook.com is banned

Editor, As some students may have figured out, Facebook.com, a commonly used social Web site, has been acting rather flaky as of late to those living in the dorms on the University-provided Internet. About a week ago, I was having trouble connecting to the site - figuring it was server issues on their side, I figured I would try later.

Column: Children defy ideologies

by Dane Roberts Daily Lobo columnist Democrats are committed to using government powers to create both equality of opportunity and to strive for equitable outcomes. In principle - if not necessarily in practice - Republicans think citizens should be responsible for themselves, and regard these government interventions as ineffective and wasteful - an unjust use of hard-earned taxpayer money.

Letter: Crosswalk rules rooted in pedestrian legislation

Editor, Below is a response to the letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, "Students at crosswalks oblivious to lines of cars." Mike Tandysh, the phenomenon you noticed is properly called "crosswalk use," which is in fact a New Mexico Legislature-given right. Behold, New Mexico Statutory Chapter 66, Article 7, Section 334, subdivision A: 66-7-334.

Letter: Time has come for Muslims to unite against violence

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to Ahmad Musleh's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, since I fear many who only listen to the politically correct media fail to grasp the true perniciousness of Muslim terrorism. Sunni Muslims are savagely killing Shiite Muslims.
