Editorial: America: keeping nothing safe at all

I feel safe. I feel really, really safe. In fact, I feel so safe that the thought of walking down the street at night makes me shudder because I'm leaving myself open to attack or rape. I feel so safe that every time I open the newspaper, I'm reading about children killing adults.

COLUMN: U.S., U.N. should join forces

Anecdotes about pride are plentiful. In the Book of Proverbs, the Bible tells us that, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." Founding forefather Thomas Jefferson said, "Pride costs more than hunger, thirst and cold." And, perhaps most pertinent, American Clergyman Fulton John Sheen said, "Pride is an admission of weakness; it secretly fears all competition and dreads all rivals.

COLUMN: Staff salaries not high UNM priority

by Harry P. Norton Daily Lobo Guest Columnist In the early part of April 2003, UNM Department of Human Resources posted on its Web site the "2003 Staff Salary Structure" table and "Job Title Upgrades." This is the result of a market study conducted by HR to place UNM staff salaries in a "more competitive market position," starting July 1, 2003.

COLUMN: Students can access e-books

by Linda Lewis Daily Lobo Guest Columnist The first electronic resources the library offered were indexes, followed by databases that included complete periodical articles. Finally electronic cover-to-cover journals became available. Now we have electronic books (e-books) that can be read on any computer and do not require special equipment.

LETTER: Unleashed canines hazardous to campus

Editor, I'd like to comment on the situation of the UNM student "losing" his puppy at the Duck Pond (Monday, April 4). We have had several complaints from people regarding loose dogs on campus and around the Duck Pond. While the campus police officer's attitude and approach may not have been the best, I must say I'm glad to learn they are taking stray (off-leash) dogs seriously.

COLUMN: Corporate sponsorship is the American way

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist The truth shall set you free. Well, perhaps if you are living in some unpleasant place under a seriously repressive government. For most Americans who live in a very pleasant place under an increasingly repressive government, a far more likely proposition is that the trth shall make you uncomfortable.

Letter: Tree poetry successful

Editor, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone involved in the haiku-a-tree project, which ran last week, April 14-18, in celebration of National Poetry Month. Susan Corban of the Student Activities Center; Gary Smith, Environmental Services and Carol Vollbrecht, PPD Special Activities.

Editorial: Political system not

Former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart's visit goes to the heart, pardon the pun, of the Democratic Party's continued lack of power and the entire political system in general. The Democrats lack a strong figure to lead it back into either a majority or into the White House.

Letter: Film review inadequate

Editor, I just wanted to voice my opinion concerning your review of Rob Zombie's, "House of 1000 Corpses." I was outraged by your 1.5-star rating. What the hell did you expect - a freaking chick flick? Seriously, Zombie followed the film noir style of all classic horror flicks.

Column: Professor deep in epidemic

by Richard Schaefer UNM Communication and Journalism Associate Professor BEIJING, China - Beijing is waiting for the other shoe to drop. One student on our campus was diagnosed with SARS this afternoon. Everyone knows he won't be the last. So, at times, the fear is palpable.

COLUM: Dogfighting really a form of animal abuse

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Dogfighting is alive and well in New Mexico. Most fights are staged in the South Valley and in some of our smaller communities. I have received letters from people in Los Lunas and Belen who have told me dog fighting goes on in their neighborhoods.

EDITORIAL: Prohibiting pot use makes little sense

As yet another celebration of 4-20 passes by (colliding with Easter, as an amusing side note), the question that most youth culture asks itself once again is: Why the heck is marijuana illegal? We all know the arguments - marijuana is a gateway drug, it can cause impaired decision making, etc.

COLUNM: PETA campaigns lack originality

by Erik Bussa The Lantern (Ohio State U.) (U-WIRE) COLUMBUS, Ohio - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is a group that is becoming more and more visible in our society. Clever marketing campaigns have helped the group to succeed in spreading their message across the country.

LETTER: Albuquerque police criticism unwarranted

Editor, I am extremely dismayed by the April 17 letter to the editor and its uneducated bashing of Albuquerque Police Officer Tom Sholtis. The claims made are incorrect and unjust. First, if APD was to "clean house" of all officers who have ever been sued or cost the city money, half of the city's police force would be out of a job and the streets of Albuquerque would be without police.

COLUMN: Title IX creates opportunity

by Ashley Pierson Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa - I didn't want it to come out. It was better left hidden deep inside, but like a ticking time bomb, it was waiting for something, or someone to set it off. I am talking about my feminist nature, which stays fairly dormant until aggravated by ignorance and misinformation.

EDITORIAL: APS ignores civil rights boundaries

On the topic of violating free speech, which seems to be an oft-occurring event these days, four teachers are suing Albuquerque Public Schools for First Amendment infringement. These teachers, from Rio Grande High School, Highland High School and Albuquerque High School, were all suspended, according to the Albuquerque Tribune, "for refusing to remove antiwar signs from their classrooms.
