COLUMN: Death not necessarily morbid

So much has happened since I last wrote a column back in April. There's so much to write about and say, but I've decided to write about the dead. Don't consider this a morbid column. After all it is appropriate to write of the dead given the lives lost in the past few weeks, plus it's the season for D°a de los Muertos, a celebration observed by Mexican-Americans and others in Latin America.

COLUMN: Nuclear facilities need more security

Nuclear power plants came on the scene in the post World War II era with lots of official enthusiasm and a shortage of concern about safety. But much of that early excitement about the future of nuclear power faded after the accidents at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986, and the high economic costs of this technology with its deadly wastes.

COLUMN: A lesson in common sense economics

Lately, I've had a number of discussions with people about the nature of money and how wealth is distributed. Something I've noticed is that many people have a fundamental misunderstanding of economics. They believe that economics is a zero-sum game. LETTER: UNM opts for hypocritical, selective faculty discipline

Our President, Dr. Gordon, was quoted in The Albuquerque Tribune on Oct. 25 as saying that a person's First Amendment rights are not to be confused with academic freedom. Regarding Professor Berthold, he suggested that it may be a case where a professor's "First Amendment rights collided with his (or her) professional responsibilities."

COLUMN: Peace movement offers solutions

I was really hoping to avoid yet another column explaining the goals of the current peace movement. Unfortunately, Colby Phillips, published in the Oct. 24 Daily Lobo, has brought to my attention the fact that, in spite of the numerous people who have written about these goals, some people are still under the impression that peace activists have yet to offer any actual solutions. So, I am forced to delve into that subject once again.

COLUMN: Real democracy needed in U.S.

I am amazed at the display of fall colors and these cold winds from the north that cover everything with leaves. While nature changes before our eyes, we still believe that dropping bombs brings peace and freedom or at least fills our empty cups with pride.

LETTER: Media serves us war propaganda

I've been away for almost two months now, and Wednesday was the first time I read the Daily Lobo since my departure. I wanted to say a few things about the perspective that I see on the news from Germany.
