Dr. Peg's Prescription: Mindful approach to pain

Whoever you are, whatever you have been through, you have had pain. From a stubbed toe or razor burn to broken bones and surgery, all of us have been hurt or experienced pain of one kind or another. Aching, stabbing, heavy, sharp, throbbing, pounding; our language is filled with colorful descriptors of pain, and most of us wince just thinking about it.

Net neutrality threatened by FCC, again

The guiding principles behind ‘Net Neutrality’ are under attack. Last Wednesday, hundreds of major tech firms and Internet advocacy groups staged an online protest of the Federal Communication Commission’s recent proposals, which will allow Internet service providers to charge customers more money for faster online service. These rules run contrary to the concept of a free and open “marketplace of ideas.”

Students suffer and coaches reap rewards

Editor, Open letter to the UNM Board of Regents: Outraged. That is our response to the front page Albuquerque Journal article on Sept. 9: “Lobo basketball coach Craig Neal just got a pay raise to $950,000 per year: IS HE WORTH IT?”

Marijuana prohibition will go up in smoke

Editor, One of the human rights guaranteed to American citizens under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution is “prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.” Even though we live in a republic, and we don’t have democracy by ballot, the right to petition the government is fundamental as a means of protecting public participation in government, especially in this age of apathy.

Hamas to blame for Gaza civilian deaths, not Israel

Editor, Jason Darrensburg’s Sept. 5 column, “U.S. needs to stem violence, not support it,” paints a very distorted view of the Israel-Hamas conflict. J.D. accuses Israel of “purposely targeting” U.N. schools and shelters without realizing that Hamas bases its military operations in urban areas, purposely allowing its citizens to be injured and killed in order to score a propaganda victory.

American media denies a Christian religious war

Editor, Why don’t we just say aloud a big reason we started air strikes against ISIS in Iraq? It was to save the Christians. No, not the Yazidis; our media were likely obeying government warnings to downplay the fact that it was the Iraqi Christians our increasingly Christo-fascist nation was really concerned about.

Pay hike shows faith in coach

Apparently one successful year is enough to give a pay raise to a coach who completed his rookie campaign. The Athletics Department announced Monday that coach Craig Neal will enter his second season at the Lobos’ helm netting a $950,000-per-year base salary, plus incentives, becoming the highest-paid coach in the conference.

Thoughtful writing on Middle East refreshing

Editor, I would like to compliment Jason Darensburg on his insightful article in the Daily Lobo of Friday, Sept. 5, 2014. It is a very brave thing to deliver such a clear and insightful argument confronting today’s biased and willingly dishonest American media outlets. As an exchange student from Amsterdam I was delighted reading such a profound peace of journalism in a university newspaper.

Opinion column inspires thought, appreciation

Dept. of Art, Art History building inadequate

Editor, Thank you for the great article “Fine Arts lacking vital money for upgrades” in Wednesday’s paper. I would like to make a correction. The department in the article is the Department of Art and Art History, which is a part of the College of Fine Arts, but there is no Fine Arts Department at UNM. Although we are working constantly to keep the building looking good and working well, it is too old and too small for such a large number of faculty and students.

The police really fit the description

The killing of an unarmed young black man in Ferguson, Missouri and the brutal response of police forces there to protesters brought down much needed media examination of the practices of police forces in the US. Several interviews reveal stories of constant police harassment, showing the singling out of minorities by law enforcement to be a common thing. It’s a sadly familiar occurrence. Yet, sometimes particular cases shine a magnifying glass on the overall injustice by way of driving home the central absurdity in it. On Aug. 22, around 5 p.m. local time, a black man walking down LaCienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California, was surrounded by police, cuffed, searched for weapons and detained on a six-figure bail demand.

Column: Questions to keep in mind as sports kick off

I’m not gonna lie: taking this Daily Lobo managing editor gig after having the state’s top sports beat – New Mexico men’s basketball – was a challenging choice for me. But you know what? I can’t completely separate myself from the sports coverage arena. Although I won’t be a primary sports reporter anymore, I’m staying on board as a regular sports columnist here at the DL. My goal is to bring you a column at least every two weeks, but weekly when possible. I’ll give my thoughts across the UNM sports landscape, the Mountain West and college athletics in general. Pro stuff? You can get that elsewhere.
