Column: Davie's contract extension well-deserved

It took Bob Davie four long years to turn the New Mexico football program into a winning one. And less than a month after leading the Lobos to their first bowl appearance in almost a decade, Davie was rewarded with a well-deserved two-year contract extension last week. Davie is now signed up to be the head coach for the Lobos until 2021 and will receive a $50,000 raise. The move is a smart one for New Mexico Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. Since his hire Davie has managed to pull UNM out of the doldrums of college football, reviving a program that many thought couldn’t be saved.

Women's Basketball: Dip in standings sparks need for turnaround

The urgency to get on the winning track for the New Mexico women’s basketball team has begun. Following UNM’s 66-48 loss to Wyoming, the Lobos (9-7, 2-3 MW) fell to the bottom half of the Mountain West standings. Although there is still plenty of conference play left, head coach Yvonne Sanchez said she is still searching for the right pieces to get her team in the winning mindset.

Women's Basketball: Lobos still searching for groove early in MW play

Head coach Yvonne Sanchez said in last week’s press conference she wasn’t sure if her team was prepared to be one of the premiere Mountain West teams. The head coach wasn't worried about lack of talent, but said the team hasn't been in the position of having a target on its back. Saturday’s 66-48 loss to Wyoming marked the third loss in four games for UNM, dropping them to a 2-3 conference record (9-7 overall).

Men's basketball: Lobos fall to Wyoming for second MW loss

In a battle between the top two scorers in the Mountain West, one player set a career high. The other missed the start to disciplinary reasons. Wyoming guard Josh Adams proved to be as good as advertised Saturday in the Cowboys’ 70-68 point victory over New Mexico at WisePies Arena, the Pokes’ first win in Albuquerque since 2003.

Women's basketball: Lobos find offense in big home win

New Mexico finally found its groove on offense Wednesday night in a rugged 67-53 battle against UNLV. Head coach Yvonne Sanchez said she was pleased with her team’s response to bring a halt to UNM’s two-game skid. Sanchez said she has been working on being more patient as a coach to let the team play through its mistakes.

Women's basketball: Sputtering Lobo offense to face tough UNLV defense

Facing off against UNLV’s aggressive style defense is problematic for any team in the Mountain West, let alone New Mexico’s struggling offense. LoboHead coach Yvonne Sanchez said in Tuesday’s press conference that the team has yet to find that go-to player on the offensive side of the ball, despite having two prime candidates -- sophomore guard Cherise Beynon and senior forward Khadijah Shumpert -- with abilities to take over games.

Football: Byrd remembered

New Mexico safety Markel Byrd’s talents will be missed on the football field, but his memory remains a prominent force in the college football community. After redshirting during the 2013 season out of high school, Byrd quickly became an integral part of the New Mexico secondary early in the 2014-2015 campaign. It wasn’t until this past season, Byrd’s redshirt sophomore year where he became a playmaker for the squad, and a major reason New Mexico garnered a bowl appearance.

Football: Bob Davie signs contract extension through 2021

New Mexico has taken notice of Bob Davie’s winning football season and bowl appearance, the first since 2007, and has locked up the head coach through 2021. Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs announced on Monday morning that Davie signed a two-year extension with UNM, the second extension during his tenure as a Lobo.

Tennis: New Mexico to start the Spring season with a challenging tournament, hosted by No. 17 Texas tech

The New Mexico men’s tennis team will begin the spring semester on Friday in Lubbock, Texas as the defending Mountain West champion. Texas Tech will host an invitational featuring UNM along with the University of Arizona and the University of the Pacific. UNM was the first to host the quadrangular event in 2014, followed by Arizona last year. Everyone will compete against each team twice and the tournament will involve both singles and doubles matches.

Skiing: New Mexico looks to finish strong at Utah Invitational

The Lobos Nordic squad prepares for its first taste of season action as they kick off the second half of the Utah Invitational on Jan. 10. The women's Nordic team has some seasoned national champions with the likes of Emilie Cedervärn, who won the title in classical, and Eva Sever Rus, the champion in freestyle in 2014.

Women's basketball: Offense will come, coach says

Lack of talent isn’t New Mexico’s offensive problem head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. As far as solving the issue, the head coach says she is working on it. Following New Mexico’s heartbreaking 69-65 double overtime loss to Fresno State in WisePies Arena on Jan. 2, Sanchez said it wasn’t the team’s defense that was the issue, it was the inability to convert offensively.

Skiing: Myklebust shines as Lobos take fifth in Utah invite

New Mexico got off to less than an ideal start to open up the 2015-2016 season in its three day trip to the Park City Invitational in Utah. UNM finished off the opening competition of the season in fifth place with a final score of 214. The men finished in 6th place as a while the women finished in fourth during the event which lasted from Jan. 4 through Jan. 6.
