Brother converts golfer into Lobo

Transfer Mark Anderson said he will do anything to help the UNM golf team win the national title this season. "I want to do whatever it takes for the team to win this year, whether that means shooting a 55 or calling my teammates to encourage them while they travel," Anderson said.

Softball gets fresh faces

This is a big transition year for the Lobo softball team, with just one pitcher back from last year's rotation. Leading the hurlers will be senior Ashley Perkins, the lone returnee. "I want to be a leader on this team and pitch well," Perkins said. "But in order to do so, I have to stay consistent.

Duo mixes well on doubles court

by Jack Jackson Daily Lobo Men's tennis coach Alan Dils could come back to school for a degree in chemistry. It's not the best individual players that make a solid doubles team, Dils said. "It's personalities," he said. "The doubles team is like a marriage, with two players who can exist together and get along together.

MWC champs face first test in tourney

The women's tennis team starts its season with the highest national ranking in its history. The team is No. 24 in the country and the defending Mountain West Conference champion. It also has the 24th-ranked player in the nation. Team members will have little time to enjoy the sensation, however.

Lobos scrape past Rebels

The Lobos showed they could gut out a win against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels on Saturday night. UNM was abysmal from the three-point line - 6-for-28 - and not much better from anywhere else. The Lobos made 35 percent of their field goal attempts but still managed to out-play UNLV in the 62-58 win.

Column: Boxing-inspired films knock out actual sport

Sport is so much more than games or matches. The stories behind the athletes can be infinitely more compelling that what happens on the playing field. Or in the ring. Boxing has become less than an afterthought in America. No casual fan can name the contenders in each weight class, and those who are willing to plunk down $50 for a heavyweight championship are inevitably disappointed.

Women's Basketball After only the third loss of the season Thursday against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels, the UNM women's basketball team wasn't giving up first place in the Mountain West Conference that easily. The Lobos drubbed the San Diego State Aztecs 71-52 in San Diego Saturday with the help of senior forward Lindsey Arndt.

Swim coach closes career with victory

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM swimming and diving team defeated New Mexico State 164-114 at Seidler Natatorium on Saturday. It was the final home meet this season and the last in the career of long-time head coach Bill Spahn. It was also the last time three senior swimmers will compete in Seidler.

6 point guards better than 1

Head coach Ritchie McKay could have put an ad in local papers last week for a point guard after losing his regular man for the job. Kris Collins went down for six to eight weeks with a broken right foot Wednesday. On the other hand, that might have eliminated the number of guys who applied for the position on the UNM men's basketball team.

From Norway to 'Burque

UNM's national champion ski team will not settle for the top skiers in America - they recruit the best around in the world. Seven of the nine male skiers at UNM are from other countries, including five from Norway. Sophomore alpine skiers Lars Loeseth and Peter Roering attended NTG Ski Academy in Geilo, Norway, and chose UNM for college.

Maddox to play for Temple

A glimpse into the future is exactly what Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley is getting right now. There's a new member on the scout team for the Owls, and, according to Staley, ex-UNM women's basketball player Fatima Maddox is going to be Temple's ticket to going deep in the NCAA tournament come January 2006.

Lobos lose another key player to injury

Scratch another starter from the Lobos' lineup. Point guard Kris Collins, who has started 18 of the team's 19 games this season, broke his foot in practice Wednesday and will be out six to eight weeks. The 6-foot-2-inch junior's season is essentially over.

Staff Report The UNM men's and women's track and field teams churned out gold medals at the 15th annual Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday and Sunday. When the dust settled, the UNM men's team had itself a fifth-place finish with 59.

Arndt holds Utes' prospective player of the year to 12 points by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Lindsey Arndt showed preseason hype is just that as she overwhelmed the projected 2005 Mountain West Conference player of the year on Saturday. Arndt gracefully tamed Utah leader Kim Smith in the Lobos' victory over the Utes.

Lobo defense falls to Utes' star player

Staff Report Andrew Bogut had his way with the Lobos' defense in Utah's 69-58 home win over UNM Saturday. The Ute big man notched 18 of his team's first 19 points, seeming to score at will in the paint. He finished with 24 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, both game highs.

Staff Report Some conference kudos were handed out to members of the Lobo swim team and ski team after strong performances last weekend. Senior Becca Barras was named Mountain West Conference Women's Diver of the Week after coming up big for the Lobos in a losing effort against Utah last weekend.

With her team muddling through an ugly first quarter of basketball, when they didn't score their third point until nearly 10 minutes had gone by, Mandi Moore decided it was time to start shooting. "I thought we were awful nervous, and we questioned our confidence a little bit," Flanagan said of the game's slow start.

Young squad cheers to finals

When UNM fans attend Lobo men's basketball games this season, they can get a courtside glimpse of the No. 12 team in the country. The Universal Cheerleading Association named the UNM co-ed cheerleading team the 12th best in the nation on Sunday. UNM finished above large, reputable teams such as Texas and Central Florida.
