Bitter End

Sometimes a loss might not be all that bad. The 13th-seeded UNM men's soccer team had every right to feel down on its luck following a 6-5 shootout loss to the 4th-seeded Virginia Cavaliers in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. It's a funny thing, though.

Patrick Grange wasn't letting his senior season slip away that easily. The forward played a part in three of the four goals the UNM men's soccer team scored against the Portland Pilots on Tuesday. With a gnawing chill in the air, the 13th-seeded Lobos scored three second-half goals to beat the Portland Pilots 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Cross country finishes in top 10

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Head coach Matt Henry choked up just a bit when he described All-American runner Matt Gonzales's 2nd-place performance at the Cross Country National Championships on Monday. "I don't think people can grasp what he did," Henry said.

Slow start leads to blowout win

The Lobo men's soccer team didn't look like they were doing much to handle Portland in the NCAA tournament game Tuesday night. Then they turned it on like a tornado. In the first half, it took a goal by Portland's Heath Pearce to get them going. The Pilots seemed to own the ball throughout the first 10 minutes.

Furious P

So women's hoops can pack The Pit and bring home conference championships. There's still nothing like the men's game. Men's college basketball is still men's college basketball. Quick question: What's the most exciting national sporting event every single year? It ain't the Super Bowl or the World Series and forget about the NBA playoffs.

QB sprints Lobos to win

No quarterback would want the passing numbers Kole McKamey put up in Saturday's win over Wyoming: 5-for-15 for 40 yards and one interception. But as Rocky Long knows - he was a standout UNM quarterback from 1969-71 and left the program as its all-time leading rusher - the position's not called "throwing back.

Balling till he's falling

Do not fear Lobo fans, I'm here to dispel the myth that women's basketball is just like men's played underwater. Speaking of which, Phil is fresh off a trip to NCAA headquarters to debate Title IX. He was escorted by security off the premises after marching back and forth wearing a snorkel and a pair of, as he calls them, "cute" Speedos while holding a sign that read, "If I wanted synchronized swimming, I'd watch the Olympics.

Lobos secure ticket to tourney
