Fishbein nets coach award

Staff Report After a 17-1-2 record and third round NCAA tournament appearance, Soccer America named UNM men's soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein 2004 Coach of the Year. The third round appearance was the first ever for the Lobos, who have been in the tournament three times.

Lobos to bat against Isotopes

UNM baseball's toughest game this season may come halfway through the team's schedule, when the Lobos take on the Albuquerque Isotopes in an exhibition game at Isotopes Park. "This is a game (Isotopes President) Ken Young and I talked about two or three years ago," said UNM Athletic Director Rudy Davalos during a press conference on Tuesday.

Swimming UNM's swimming and diving team saw highs and lows at its Friday and Saturday meet. The Lobos lost to the Utah Utes 167-128 at the Seidler Natatorium. But senior diver Becca Barras took home two awards on the one-meter and three-meter board events.

Column: Flanagan favors players who follow the rules

Shocked? A bit. Fine with it? Definitely. That should sum up women's basketball head coach Don Flanagan's attitude toward Fatima Maddox's decision to quit the team. "It really was a surprise to me," Flanagan said. "Individually, she had good speed and good quickness.

Star's injury tests teamwork

by Matt Kuzila Daily Lobo The Lobos suffered a major loss in their convincing 89-75 win over the Wyoming Cowboys during the Mountain West Conference opener. With six minutes left in the first half, fans and teammates watched as UNM's most heralded player limped off Bob King Court and headed to the locker room.

Moore tears ACL in bowl loss

DonTrell Moore's bad bowl luck continued in San Francisco this year during UNM's 34-19 loss to Navy. On the Lobo's second drive of the Emerald Bowl, Moore suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and didn't return for the rest of the game. "He will need surgery, but he hasn't decided to announce when yet," assistant director of media relations Alfredo Moreno said.

Up-and-down season ends strong for QB

With the early departure of DonTrell Moore in the Emerald Bowl, the Lobos' game plan changed. The new strategy called for a heavy dose of quarterback Kole McKamey. Although Navy quarterback Aaron Polanco stole all the glory by running for three touchdowns and throwing for another, McKamey put up some remarkable numbers.

Rowland named first-team All-American

Junior forward Jeff Rowland etched his name into the annals of UNM men's soccer history this year, breaking the Lobos' single-season scoring record. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recognized Rowland's performance with a first team All-American award Friday.

Lobos expecting fierce competition

The Emerald Bowl will be a battle of strengths as the strikingly similar Naval Academy and UNM Lobos meet for the first time on Dec. 30. The Lobos finished the season 7-4, earning second place in the Mountain West Conference. Navy, which has no conference affiliation, ended its season 9-2.

Lobo men clobber Pine Bluff

Staff Report The Lobos held Akansas-Pine Bluff to just 18 first-half points on their way to a 77-53 win Sunday at The Pit. Danny Granger had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead UNM. Arkansas-Pine Bluff jumped out to an early 7-2 lead then fell behind for good when UNM went on a 16-0 run.

Ice Wolves celebrate first victories

The UNM Ice Wolves ended the fall with their first two wins against the visiting Northern Arizona Ice Jacks. Friday night's game was a 6-4 nail-biter at Outpost Ice Arena. Saturday, UNM's blowout win against the Jacks 7-0 at Blades Ice Arena was the complete reverse.

Fourth-quarter run seals Emerald Bowl loss for Lobos

The Lobos couldn't overcome a late Navy drive that lasted almost an entire quarter's worth of play in their 34-19 loss at the Emerald Bowl on Thursday. Navy (10-2) brought not only their "A" game but what seemed like the entire Naval Academy. Of the 30,563 people at SBC Park, fans decked in cherry and silver were vastly outnumbered by those wearing navy and gold.

Former UNM basketball coach dies at 81

Former Lobo Bob King died last week at the age of 81. In the 1960s, King brought unprecedented success to the Lobo basketball program. He won two Western Athletic Conference titles, took the team to the National Invitation Tournament three times and the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history in 1968.

Fans get show in comeback win

A game of Secret Santa was the difference for the UNM women's basketball team on Saturday at The Pit. The Lobos (6-1) dispensed of the San Diego Toreros (4-5) 58-50 in a game that included sophomore Fatima Maddox's coming-out party. The 5-foot-6 guard excelled against the man-to-man scheme the Toreros ran, scoring a game-high 17 points.

I'll never forget when Sports Center juxtaposed two photos of Barry Bonds late last season during a piece on steroids. The two pictures will be forever burned into the back of my brain as a true testament to the utter immorality the sports world is now based on.

There had to be a Bob King before there could be a Pit. Mike Roberts, who has announced Lobo games since they first began playing in The Pit, remembers the impact King had on UNM and the Albuquerque community. "He brought Lobo basketball from almost nothing into prominence, and started Lobo mania," Roberts said.

Players invited to MLS tryouts

Two UNM men's soccer players may get the chance to achieve something kids grow up dreaming about. Seniors Hans Bevers and Jeff Krause have been invited to participate in the Major League Soccer Player Combine Jan. 9-11. Sixty-six college seniors were invited to the tryout which gives MLS coaches a chance to view players before the MLS SuperDraft on Jan.
