Student Jahmelia Lindsay went to Coyolillo, Mexico, for a class during the summer. "It was a transcendental experience," Lindsay said. "We wanted to get back." Lindsay is the president of Tercera Raiz, or Third Root, a student group dedicated to helping the international black community.
This year's Come Out show was more than just a masquerade. "We try to educate people," said P.J. Sedillo, MC of the show and a UNM student. "We all have masks that we need to take off and reveal. That's what the performers do. They are who they are."
Evelyn Walker History Junior What year are you? It is my second degree. I am retired. I got my first degree in business, and I worked in banking, in finance. I have another two years, another four-year degree. I transferred some (credits), about 30 hours. When did you graduate? I graduated in 1976 ...
After a forum Monday at African-American Student Services, President David Harris said there needs to be more meetings held to address the return of the Sigma Chi fraternity to UNM. "I'm willing to commit to some due process here," he said. "I don't have any problem with that."

Editor, In response to the question of the week about smoking in Friday's issue of the Daily Lobo, I wonder if anyone asked Alex Hansell what she thought of African-Americans, gay people, Jews, skateboarders, cyclists and people who don't speak English. I just want to know if her bigotry is limited to people who smoke, or if it's a general hatred of traits that are different from her own.
Editor, This is in response to the letter by Rachel Shreve about abortion in the Oct. 2 Daily Lobo. Speaking as a female scientist, I would like to agree that generally there is no debate that biological life begins at conception. Yet, life in the biological sense just means that a cell is able to metabolize nutrients, produce energy to grow and reproduce.

UNM and Albuquerque Police departments put the southwest corner of campus on lockdown Friday from about 5:30 to 9 p.m. while searching for a suspected gunman. Editor, I am a citizen of New Mexico, so UNM is my University. I am appalled that the war planners are using my University in my state to promote genocide. I come from a long line of military people. My father was a B-17 pilot and firebombed Germany, and he came home and killed himself because he had participated in that horror.
Student Alan Takach said the balloon fiesta is more like a party than a competition for serious balloonists. "We go out to fly for fun on our own and do competitions," he said. The UNM men's soccer team took less than 10 minutes to score the game-winning goal Friday against San Jose State. Sunday against Sacramento State, it took more than 96 minutes for the Lobos to get on the board, in what was an intense 1-0, overtime victory.
