Letter: Students still encouraged to seek mental help

Editor, We are concerned that students reading the headline, "Suicidal thoughts may get students kicked out," in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, will not seek help if they become suicidal. The headline implies that all students with suicidal thoughts are at risk of being kicked out of UNM.

Family values cross cultures

Americans aren't the only ones with dysfunctional families. "My Neighbors the Yamadas" is an animated film that follows the life of one family living in a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. They fight, lose their 6-year-old daughter in a shopping mall, eat their dinner in front of a TV set, ignore each other, have a preteen boy who looks at dirty magazines and a grandma who talks to caterpillars.

Wolves mix rock, electronica in album

Finally, a pretentious art rock band you can sink your teeth into. We Are Wolves sounds like every other garage band to emerge from the woodwork the last few years, at least during a perfunctory first listen. But they manage to pull a few interesting musical tricks out of what are surely very tight sleeves.

Defender scores lone goal

One exhibition game into the season and Matt Wootton's stat sheet reads like a forward's dream - one shot, one goal. It's just that Wootton isn't a forward. He's the left back for the UNM men's soccer team, and he scored the lone goal in a 1-1 tie against No.

High school up, running

High Tech High got off to a smooth start - mostly. Monica Summers, a humanities teacher at the school, said there were some early problems with the software that is supposed to stop students from using classroom computers to visit inappropriate Web sites. She said the software did its job a little too well, even preventing students from visiting the PBS Web site.

Letter: UNM emergency room surpasses reputation

Editor, My husband and I have each had to be admitted to an emergency room during the past summer, and we chose the facility at the University of New Mexico. I know a lot of middle-income people who choose to go to a different hospital because they have heard that the UNM emergency room is inadequate, understaffed or full of detoxing homeless people - not the best place to go.

Letter: Criticizing US military during war is not treason

Editor, Larry Walsh's letter published in Monday's Daily Lobo makes a valid point about reading contracts: oral promises mean nothing, and you should read and understand a contract before signing, especially when you're signing up for the military. However, he loses it in the final sentence, saying that criticism of recruitment tactics is criticism of the military, and that in a time of war, it is treason.

Letter: Bush, oil industry profit from spoils of war in Iraq

Editor, Thank you for the exposÇ on the shameless profiteering by our oil industry in Iraq. Could it be more obvious at this juncture that George Bush and his corporate and neoconservative cronies have won the profit wars? It is disgraceful enough for our nation to have invaded a sovereign nation, killed tens of thousands of innocent people, destroyed their infrastructure, created legions of violent insurgents and brought Iraq to the brink of civil war - but for those closest to George Bush and Dick Cheney to be wallowing in wealth as a result would shame any of the worlds most evil despots, past and present.

Starbucks opens in library

At 3 p.m. Tuesday there were about 10 people waiting in line at Zimmerman Library - and not to check out books. Zimmerman opened a Starbucks coffee shop in its lobby Monday. It's the first Starbucks to open in a university library in the country. Store manager Elizabeth Clark said the store had been busy since it opened.

Letter: Religious beliefs should go under the microscope

Editor, True science is a body of unproven theories. True scientists conduct experiments to determine the validity of a particular theory. As they do that, three things can occur: more evidence is found to support the theory, sufficient evidence is found to discount the theory, or evidence of a totally new theory is found.

According to the police report, the woman who reported the vandalism saw the passenger of a black truck get out and break the window of a car. According to the report, the owner of the car said nothing was missing.

Men's team loses top runner

Just one year after cross country head coach Matt Henry saw his men's team finish in ninth place at the NCAA Championships, the Lobo squad suffered another big loss earlier this summer. After seniors Matt Gonzales, Ben Ortega, Sean Flaherty and Nick Martinez - all key to last year's squad - graduated, Shadrack Biwott packed up his bags and left UNM for The University of Oregon, according to Henry.

Letter: People who have mental illnesses often mistreated

Editor, Many people treat the mentally ill with no respect. They tend to avoid people who suffer from a mental illness and fail to treat them appropriately, forgetting the Golden Rule. The reason I write this letter is to inform new students to treat everybody with some respect.

Letter: Column misses mark on basic facts about Turkey

Editor, I am writing about James Stambaugh's "No gas for Iraq War critics," which appeared in Monday's Daily Lobo. I am not writing about whether I agree with his views; I would just like to point out some mistakes that I would not expect from a columnist.

Shortcuts mean more maintenance

Taking a shortcut to class can create headaches for groundskeepers at UNM. "When one or two people do it it's OK," said Dave Trujillo, supervisor of grounds and landscaping at Physical Plant. "But when 100 to 500 students cut across each day, it compacts the turf and the soil.

Column: Riley's Crew

Look every other Wednesday for two sports reporters and Riley to sound off about a different topic in the sports world. Basically, because we can. First on our hit list: Fantasy Football. You know, all the fun of reality football without 'roid rage. Here's what we think you should do if you want to win your league for once and have something better to talk about than the wicked time you had at the Journey concert.
