Students welcomed to campus

UNM will sponsor a record number of new international students this fall semester. And, in an attempt to make those new students feel welcome, University President F. Chris Garcia played host during an ice cream social at University House. "It makes me feel special," said Loreto Catoira, a first-year doctoral student from Spain.

LETTER: Reality is not pristine, why should the student newspaper be any different

Editor, To all those whining about the TD's ads in the Lobo, I have to be blunt and say grow up. There is such a thing as free speech in America. Is that freedom to advertise limited to the ads these complainers like or approve of? Please tell me that the First Amendment got modified to shelter us college kids from the evils of strip club ads.

UNM recruit comes up short; denied admission

Days before the fall semester was to begin, the UNM men's basketball team announced Thursday that junior college transfer Shelton Colwell has been denied admission to the University. Colwell, a 6-foot-7-inch, 215 pound forward who signed a letter of intent in the spring to play with the Lobos, failed to meet the admission standards set by UNM.

A former UNM professor has filed a lawsuit against the University and three medical school employees alleging discrimination and harassment, as well as being retaliated against for failing students whom she caught cheating on a final examination. Cynthia Lopez, who taught courses in the Master of Health program, filed the lawsuit Thursday in Bernalillo County District Court.

Kelly hopes to reverse trend

by Kenn Rodriguez Daily Lobo If you saw UNM quarterback Casey Kelly on the street, you might not even guess he's a football player. The 6-foot-3-inch, 193-pound junior is way too laid back. He's rangy enough to be taken for an athlete, but his demeanor is about as far from the hyped-up jock stereotype as you can get.

UNM's final budget reaches $1.3 billion

Two weeks after UNM's new fiscal year began, the Board of Regents approved final details of the University's budget. The figures were stuck in legislative limbo until a special session was called this summer to settle a statewide budget standoff. The final tally left UNM with $1.

LETTER: Readers should rely on own thoughts and ideas

Editor, I, as a woman and a senior - that's as in 62 years old - new to the job force after being retired and a student, agree with you that people should decide for themselves what they shall or shall not wear, eat, think, etc. I love the Daily Lobo. The letters, editorials, ads, classifieds and all.

COLUMN: Tips for parking at the University

by Josh Kavanagh Guest Columnist On behalf of the staff of Parking and Transportation Services, I would like to welcome all new students, faculty, and staff to the University of New Mexico. Parking at a University is a very different experience from parking at any other facility.

LETTER: Full-page ads need discretion

Editor, I agree with others who have written in to let you know that your advertising policy needs to be addressed. The mail-out summer issue has welcome back on the front page and an offensive advertisement on the back. You reserve the right to edit letters to the editor and other content, why not advertisements? You are the gatekeeper for all content.

LETTER: Strip club ads not free speech

Editor, I would like to respond to the silly editorial by Angela Williams defending the running of ads for TD's Showclub and Fantasy World in the Lobo. First of all, this is not a First Amendment issue. Williams seems to think that by allowing TD's and Fantasy World to publish their ads in the Lobo she is courageously defending their right to free speech.

LETTER: Pledge not a violation of freedom of religion

Editor, The Constitution was written to offer freedom to the people as well as protection from hurtful and harmful acts by people with the power to do so, whether elected or not. The Constitution protects free speech - including the expression of the belief or the disbelief in God.

COLUMN: 21st century began Sept. 11

by Robert Batterson Knight Ridder-Tribune Back at the end of the 20th century - in December 1999 (or was that December 2000?) - there was a lot of confusion and debate over when the 21st century actually began; was it Jan. 1, 2000 or Jan. 1, 2001? It was neither.

LETTER: Lack of local doctors shortcoming of program

Your July 3 article on the 'Access Expo' by Doctors Without Borders on campus did not cover the panel discussion that Friday evening, which in turn did not cover an equally vital lack of accessibility and affordability of local doctors in the countries they serve.

COLUMN: Designer logos lose attraction

Oh, alligator, where art thou? Surely you remember the snooty little snapper. Perched on the pecs of preppies in the '80s, the Lacoste alligator - and the Polo pony and Yves Saint Laurent's italicized initials - turned the humble T-shirt into the corporate billboard of the late 20th century. For a while there, no one looked prouder than the logo-laden peacocks who overpaid for the privilege of boosting some designer's stock price.
