We’ve all heard about endangered species that exist globally. Majestic creatures like the humpback whale, Bengal tiger, and Mexican wolf are all species that represent pure wildness for many, and galvanize public support and money for their survival.

Students incensed by parking lot security

There have been 28 auto thefts and 97 auto burglaries on campus since January, and some students are beginning to wonder if UNM and the UNM Police Department are doing enough to protect their belongings.

Thundering Herd tramples Lobos

It was a stunning loss for the New Mexico men’s soccer team. With 31 shots on goal and 15 corner kicks, the Lobos statistically proved better than Marshall University, who only recorded seven shots and no corner kicks. But Marshall proved better where it really counted. The Thundering Herd defeated the Lobos 2-1 on Saturday night. The loss brought an end to the Lobos’ five-game home winning streak.

Sarah Belle Brown award winners honored

The office of the UNM President Bob Frank has announced the 2014 winners of the Sarah Belle Brown Community Service Awards. This year’s awardees include student winner Priscila Poliana, a graduate student in urban and regional planning; faculty award winner Dr. Arti Prasad, division chief for the Department of Internal Medicine and executive medical director of Center for Life; and staff award winner Ashley Taylor, senior academic advisor at Anderson School of Management.

Sixth sweep running for UNM cross country

The New Mexico men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their run of dominance by sweeping the Mountain West Cross Country Championships for the sixth consecutive year on Friday. For the women, it was their seventh straight MW title, while the men won their sixth successive championship.

Sports briefs for Nov. 3

The New Mexico women’s soccer team clinched the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West Tournament with a 2-1 win over regular-season champion San Diego State 2-1 Friday. UNM has won three straight games and will take on sixth-seed Boise State on Tuesday.

APD, DOJ come to agreement

The Albuquerque Police Department and the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday they had reached a settlement agreement that will require the APD to implement sweeping changes in their policies regarding use of force and the handling of suspects with mental health concerns. The agreement states it is “designed to ensure police integrity, protect officer safety, and prevent use of excessive force, including unreasonable use of deadly force, by APD.”

Campus cars out of service

UNM Police Department received a report on Saturday of multiple campus service vehicles with flat tires. In a statement, UNMPD said that 57 service vehicles across campus were vandalized in what may be a Halloween prank.

Lobos tip off with strong start in exhibition

The New Mexico men’s basketball team took the court for the first time this season in front of 13,131 fans at home, defeating West New Mexico 89-45 in the team’s first exhibition. Senior guard Hugh Greenwood and sophomore guard Cullen Neal combined to score the team’s first 23 points, nine of which came off of three straight 3-pointers by Greenwood.

Lobos look forward to exhibition test

In an offseason full of Lobos getting drafted to play professionally, coaching staff changes and nine new recruits, the New Mexico men’s basketball programs gets to showcase the new talent Saturday night at The Pit. The Lobos host Western New Mexico in the first exhibition game of the 2014-15 season, and second-year head coach Craig Neal said the team is coming together well and is finally finding their rhythm, even with the nine new faces on the roster.

The world is not a welcoming place for kids

My wife and I recently celebrated our 31st anniversary. With each passing year we’re more convinced we made the right decision by not having kids. We decided long ago that we didn’t want to bring children into this world because we could see a looming disaster on the horizon. The future looked pretty bleak at the time, and things have only gotten worse since we tied the knot back in 1983: overpopulation, pollution, economic meltdown, disease, endless war, religious strife — how can anyone turn a blind eye to it?

Ending homeless cycle begins with aid

Jason Westman has been homeless in Albuquerque for nearly 20 years. He has been diagnosed with PTSD and has a history of alcohol abuse, and though he’s tried to get treatment, he never stays on it for long. During the warm months he sleeps on the streets, begging for change and occasionally staying at a shelter. But every winter, Westman said he usually commits a low-level crime like breaking a window so he can go to county jail, get out of the cold and get three meals a day for a few months.

MW games a tough task for Lobos

The Mountain West has proven to be a tough run for New Mexico during Bob Davie’s tenure. In 19 games against the conference, UNM is 2-17 (.105 winning percentage), including 0-3 this season, and has been outscored by an average of eight points per game. UNM has been outscored by 169 points in its 17 losses.
