Women’s Soccer: Lobos lose in semifinals shootout, fall in Mountain West tournament

The University of New Mexico Lobos faced the San José State Spartans in the Mountain West Conference semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The score ended in 0-0 after overtime, with the Lobos eventually losing in a shootout 4-2. The Lobos had been the reigning conference champions for the past two seasons. While losing in a shootout is a disappointing way to end the season, the Lobos did play well in their last game; there were multiple shots where mere inches would have completely changed the outcome of the match.

UNM LEAF member fights for the future with climate justice work

Since her freshman year, University of New Mexico sophomore Feleecia Guillen has fought for climate justice as a member of UNM Leaders for Environmental Action and Foresight. Her unbridled passion for climate action has driven her to advocate for community health and survival on both a university and statewide level. “My passion for climate change and climate action really started when I joined UNM LEAF … I had a general knowledge of everything going on with the climate, but it wasn’t until I joined UNM LEAF that I really started to understand exactly the issues that we are facing,” Guillen said.

5 and Why: 5 fall fashion tips

While we’re well into more than half of this year’s fall season, it’s never too late to learn the best fall fashion tips to be your most stylish self. Fashion stylist and communications and art studio major at the University of New Mexico Natassja Santistevan gave us their best tips for fall looks. Textures Fall is the best time to “flex textures” and play with patterns to create a great outfit, according to Santistevan. Fun patterns and strong colors make for a good combo. Santistevan did warn to combine the right pattern combos or else you could create an outfit that is quite the opposite of what you want.

El Centro de la Raza commemorates Día de los Muertos

El Centro de la Raza at the University of New Mexico went all out for their weeklong Day of the Dead celebrations which began on Friday, Oct. 28 at Mesa Vista Hall. The celebration culminated with the set up of El Centros’ traditional Day of the Dead altar, followed by food and music for all attendees. El Centro de la Raza is a resource center at UNM dedicated to student advocacy, meaningful programs and services, and educating the campus community on the diverse issues that affect Latinx and Hispano students attending or wishing to attend UNM.

Vigil held to honor former GPSA president Muhammad Afzaal Hussain

Mentors, colleagues and friends honored the life of graduate student Muhammad Afzaal Hussain at a vigil on Friday Oct. 28 in Kiva Hall at the University of New Mexico. The vigil comes after Hussain was killed in August of this year. On the night of Aug. 1, 2022, while taking his evening walk, Afzaal Hussain was shot near his apartment in Albuquerque by Cornell and Garfield Avenues. This event happened five days after the passing of Aftab Hussein, 41, by the hand of Muhammed Syed, 51, who the Albuquerque Police Department has since charged for the murder of both men.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos defeat West Texas A&M in exhibition game

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team played the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs in their opening exhibition match, walking away with a 84-75 victory. The Lady Buffs are a Division II athletics university; last season, they finished in the Elite Eight of the Division II women’s basketball tournament. The team had a good showing with four starters scoring 14 or more. LaTascya Duff had 17 points and her twin sister LaTora Duff had a team high nine assists; she also had two steals and a block. Paula Reus had eight rebounds to lead the Lobos.

Men’s Basketball: Men’s team looks promising in exhibition game

The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team defeated the Colorado State University Pueblo Thunderwolves 85-52 in their exhibition match on Saturday, Oct. 29. The team looked strong with their new lineup that looks to fix some of the issues that plagued them last season. Jaelen House led the Lobos in scoring with 20 points; he also had three assists along with a steal and only played for 16 minutes. Jamal Mashburn Jr. got the team off to a hot start and set the tone for the game; he had 11 points.

'Hellraiser' (2022) has such sights to show you

If there’s any time to be a horror fan, it's during October when highly anticipated horror movies dominate theaters. This year saw many well-known horror franchises, such as “Halloween” and “Scream,” continue their legacies on the silver screen. Others, such as “Hellraiser” (2022), released Oct. 7 on Hulu, break expectations and carve out their own spaces within their franchises. The film almost completely abandons the characters from the “Hellraiser” franchise and Clive Barker’s two novels “The Hellbound Heart” and film tie-in “The Scarlet Gospels.” The movie centers on recovering addict Riley McKendry (Odessa A’zion) and her struggle to get her brother back from the forces of hell (the Cenobites).

Go in blind to Zach Cregger’s 'Barbarian'

On top of the classic spooky films, Halloween is the perfect season to catch up on this year’s horror innovators; Jordan Peele, Ti West and now, with the release of his sleeper horror hit “Barbarian,” Zach Cregger. “Barbarian,” which became available on HBO Max on Oct. 25, is a film that knows what its audience is thinking and plays with these expectations to make a truly unpredictable, if somewhat unstable, ride. The film starts with an aspiring documentary filmmaker Tess (Georgina Campbell) checking into an AirBNB double booked with a mysterious stranger (Bill Skarsgård). The film reinvents itself (even within genre) from scene to scene; it is best seen with as few expectations as possible.

Volleyball: UNM wins 3-0 against Nevada during Pink Game

The University of New Mexico volleyball team won 3-0 against the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack on Thursday, Oct. 27. The match was also their “Pink Game” of the season for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The match marked the Lobo’s third win in a row after three tough losses. They also took revenge against Nevada after losing 3-2 in an away game on Oct. 15. “Our goal is to be better…. We're going to be better the second time that we play a team,” head coach Jon Newman-Gonchar said. “And so that's just where we're at right now.”

ASUNM senate honors retiring professor, approves new senator

The Associated Students at the University of New Mexico commended retiring professor Peter Kierst during their full senate meeting on Wednesday, Oct 26. The senate also filled a vacant seat, approving Kareem Al Bayraqdar as the newest senator. The senate unanimously passed a commendation officially honoring Kierst, a political science professor, for his accomplishments at UNM and in New Mexico. Kierst will retire at the end of this semester after 17 years of being a full-time faculty member, according to the commendation. Kierst is known on campus for his law-focused political science courses and known statewide as the lead counsel in the litigation that saw same-sex marriage legalized in New Mexico, according to senator Jesus Sanchez.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks on reproductive health and justice at UNM

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke in Keller Hall at the University of New Mexico about protecting reproductive rights. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and chair of UNM’s department of obstetrics & gynecology, Dr. Eve Espey, also participated in the conversation. The talk at UNM comes as part of a series Harris has given around the United States about reproductive justice as the Biden-Harris administration began to speak out more heavily on reproductive rights after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case was decided on June 24.

UNM artist subverts the sacred and explores queerness through photography

On Friday, Oct. 21, University of New Mexico senior Lucien Sebastian completed his first solo exhibition, “Arsenal,” at the John Sommers Gallery. He used the exhibition as a means to find catharsis and come to terms with public and interpersonal responses to his identity as a transgender man. In the exhibition, Sebastian combined photography with a collection of quotes from others in regard to his identity since coming out as transgender and his responses to them. The exhibition ends on a print with the words “never again” etched into it: Sebastian’s personal reckoning and decision to take his identity off the table as a topic of open discussion or debate. The idea for the exhibition’s name came to him after a debate over his identity in which he was criticized for coming into every argument with an “arsenal” behind him.

Local artist flirts with youth, violence and life in the Southwest through cartoon

The violence of local artist Beedallo’s work is often offset by her charming illustrative style. In her art, adolescents and animals bleed from wounds both seen and unseen: knives, whips, fire and worms. Her work, with its clean primary colors and sharp geometric style, adorns the walls of the Lapis Room art gallery in Old Town, establishing it as part of the contemporary Southwestern movement, yet bold and original of its own. Beedallo grew up surrounded by art with numerous Southwestern-style artisans on her mother’s side. She inherited a love for illustration from her mother, an illustrator herself, who taught her about art from a young age. Her primary interest, though, was cartoons.

2022 Ballot Breakdown: bond measures and amendments

Early voting in the state of New Mexico is now in full swing ahead of Election Day on Nov. 8. This year, the ballot includes three state bonds and three constitutional amendments that voters will decide whether to approve or not approve.

REVIEW: Cate Blanchett is ‘Tár’-iffic in ‘Tár’

It wouldn’t be a true awards season without talking about the latest film starring Cate Blanchett. In the case of 2022, this happens to be writer-director Todd Field’s “Tár.” After receiving a strong critical reaction at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, “Tár” finally saw release here in Albuquerque on Friday, Oct. 21, allowing us non-Venice attending folk to dig in to the masterpiece that Field has crafted. This is a film best approached with as little information as possible, so I will keep my summary extremely broad: it centers on world-renowned composer Lydia Tár (Blanchett) who slowly becomes embroiled in controversy during final preparations for a career-setting performance. This summary is extraordinarily reductive, but part of what made “Tár” most striking is how shocking it is, due in large part to how little I knew about it going in.

Protesters injured after riot police arrive at nonviolent protest

On Thursday, Oct. 20th, non-violent protesters gathered outside the Student Union Building at The University of New Mexico to protest the Turning Point USA-sponsored speaking event “How Men Can Fight Fight For Life.” Riot police affiliated with the New Mexico State Police were eventually called in despite the gathering remaining nonviolent. Protesters faced physical force from police that resulted in bruising for some. Julie Bettencourt said she was bruised in the eye by the riot police while protesting that night. Anthony Wallace, acting president of Affordable Student Housing UNM, also told the Daily Lobo that multiple students present that night reported bruising to him and shared an image of bruising on the Instagram account he runs for ASHUNM.

Football: UNM dominated by Fresno State 41-9 in homecoming game

The University of New Mexico’s football team played the California State University, Fresno Bulldogs for their homecoming game and lost 41-9. The Lobos are now on a five-game losing streak with a 2-6 overall record and have yet to win a conference game. A win would have kept the dream of a bowl game alive for at least three more weeks, but now UNM will have to win their last four games in a row to end with a 6-6 record. With the win, Fresno State now has a 2-1 record in conference play. They are tied for first in their division and will be competing for a spot at the Mountain West championship game.
