Foreign countries can get by without U.S. help

Editor, I'm looking forward to President Bush's war with Iran. I'm looking forward to paying $5 a gallon for gas. I'm looking forward to generation 9/11 being drafted. If Iran is meddling in Iraq, then what do you call what the U.S. is doing in Iraq? Maybe the best way to stop the blowback of terrorist tactics would be to stop meddling in other countries.

Take time to consider the result of your actions

Editor, The morning-after pill proves we live in a society that attempts to avoid the consequences of its mistakes. Can we avoid the consequences of living for the moment? Can one night of passion be wiped away with a single pill? It is sad to think that we can justify the frivolity of our lives by simply erasing the consequences of our actions.

Encouraging graduation

Hiring students to work at UNM might help them graduate sooner. "We know that working off campus correlates negatively with graduation rates," Provost Reed Dasenbrock said. "There's a strong push in here to increase the amount of employment opportunities on campus." Dasenbrock started a committee in June to identify the factors affecting graduation rates at UNM. The six-year graduation rate for entering freshmen in fall 2000 is 43.3 percent. He released the Graduation Task Force's report Jan. 25. The report gives eight strategies to improve graduation and retention rates.

The fury of pop culture on canvas

Though most modern technophiles may have forgotten the art form, I still dig paintings. I like seeing the texture of oil paint and hanging something of artistic merit on my wall. This isn't to say I'm buying Rembrandts. Two of my favorite paintings came from alleys, where they'd been forgotten and were thus free for the taking.

UNM to improve employee health

Fifteen people sitting in a room for three days might not seem healthy. But it's the first step in redesigning UNM's program for employee health and wellness, said Carolyn Thompson, vice president of Human Resources.

New Mexico's version of the Loch Ness Monster

When it comes to tales of enormous and legendary amphibians, Scotland boasts its elusive mascot in the waters of Loch Ness, China shares rumors of a gorge-dwelling creature that chases fishermen, and South Africa reports fearfully on a carnivorous half-horse, half-fish.

Strong performances in Shakespeare's classic play

With "Romeo and Juliet" showing at the Albuquerque Little Theatre through Feb. 18, director Peter Kierst has taken on a challenge of immense magnitude - the clichÇ factor. Every American high school graduate has read the play at least once and already sacked it for pickup lines.

UNM needs to become environmentally savvy

Editor, Being a UNM student for a semester, I have been involved with the University by living on campus and participating in the various activities that UNM has to offer. The activities and school involvement that NMPIRG offers have far surpassed any of the other options on campus, including living on campus.

Couples can overcome herpes

by Peggy Spencer Daily Lobo columnist Dear Dr. Peg, Recently, my girlfriend was diagnosed with vaginal herpes type 1 that I've given her orally. We are pretty good kids and haven't kissed too many other people. But my question is, seeing how it can pretty much be assumed I've transmitted the disease ...

Additional tuition increase would be unfair to students

Editor, Feb. 16 is UNM's day to lobby the New Mexico Legislature. This year, we are asking them to not increase the tuition credit, which increases tuition. Tuition was increased by 11 percent last year, so an additional increase would be outrageous. ASUNM and the Progressive Action Coalition are encouraging all UNM students to get involved.

Nuke creation and testing guarantees U.S. freedom

Editor, I am appalled at the ignorance of some people. Don Schrader left some intelligence to be desired in his letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. He claimed, with no proof whatsoever, that the U.S.'s nuclear arsenal terrorizes whole countries. This cannot be the case when thousands of people a year attempt to enter this country.
