Workers seek radiation compensation

Sammy Hayes could barely hold back tears when she spoke of her late husband, a former employee at Los Alamos National Laboratories. "When you watch somebody you love die, you want to take somebody out and wring their neck because you know in your heart they were exposed to stuff that causes three separate cancers," she said.


SHAC will host a screening today that focuses on body-image problems, which affect college-age students more than other age groups.

Appearance affliction

Student Heath and Counseling will hold a body image screening today as part of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. "Appearance is a big deal, and it is OK to feel good about your appearance and take time to look good and feel good," said Jessica Spurrier, health education manager.

I thought it would interest the rest of you to know what these folks have so you can do your best to avoid it. Hip-hop crew sheds light on dangers of smoking

From Ethiopia to Albuquerque, Mike Ellison is educating college kids about the harmful effects of smoking, and he has gotten lots of support from other artists and fans, he said. Ellison, aka Mike-E, has teamed up with the American Cancer Society and UNM's chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity to continue the AfroFlow tour at 6 p.

Editor, When I immigrated to the U.S. and to New Mexico in 1992, I began to hear the very famous saying that in this country "everything is possible." I was very skeptical about believing in this idea because I grew up in a country where hope had been killed by authoritarianism.

Women are talking about their vaginas, said Esteli Juarez, director of "The Vagina Monologues." Juarez is directing the show for the third year in a row with support from the Women's Law Caucus and other law organizations on campus such as the Native American Law Students Association and the Jewish Law Students Association.

Deficit may put squeeze on UNM research

UNM department chairs are grappling with a large deficit that threatens to reduce the amount of overhead return they receive on grant money for years to come. The $4.4 million deficit was created under the direction of Terry Yates, former vice president for Research and Economic Development.

Editor, As a general principle, I think people ought to hold their governing bodies accountable, whether elected or not. But holding others accountable needn't and shouldn't preclude taking personal responsibility for one's community's welfare. It should be too obvious to be stated, but I'll say it anyway: We're in a recession.

Student rock climber spotlighted on TV series

One of UNM's students is a nationally recognized rock climbing champion. Sophomore Page Brown was featured on the TV series "The Real Winning Edge" on My50-TV on Sunday. She was named national champion for females aged 18 to 19 in rock climbing in the summer of 2007.

Danridge-Martinez duo lock in win

Tony Danridge and Roman Martinez had The Pit rocking early and often Saturday against the San Diego State Aztecs. The duo made a statement in the first half, combining for 30 of the Lobos' 40 first-half points in Saturday's 75-49 win at The Pit. At the 13:21 mark, Danridge threw down a monster dunk, and with 9:10 remaining in the first half, Danridge lit up SDSU with a two-handed alley-oop dunk compliments of Dairese Gary's assist.

Freshmen dive into collegiate competition

On Wednesday, the women's swimming and diving team travels to Oklahoma City to compete in the Mountain West Conference championships. And for a team that is laden with freshmen, these are uncharted waters, head coach Tracy Ljone said. Ljone said she wants to see how her freshmen experience an intense and pressure-filled atmosphere.

Fee board draws up final recommendations

The Student Fee Review Board, which drafted its final recommendations on Friday, is stuck between a rock and a hard place: the depressed economy and shallow pockets of college students. As departments face the possibility of receiving less funding from the State, many have asked for increases in their SFRB funding.

Lobos prove they can dominate at home and on the open road

After a month on the road, the No. 44 UNM men's tennis team returned to Albuquerque in style Sunday. The Lobos swept Montana State 7-0, improving to 7-1 overall on the year. Head coach Alan Dils said he was glad to be back on familiar courts. "It's always nice to play at home," he said.

UNM outshines SDSU, ties for second in MWC

Like clockwork, the pieces fall into place. And it all started on Saturday at The Pit. In order to stay in the hunt for a Mountain West Conference regular-season crown, the UNM men's basketball team needed a win over San Diego State. The Lobos got their win, 75-49.

Slashing ethnic center's funds would create racial tension

Editor, During last year's election, a New Mexican politician made international headlines when he announced that most Latinos would not support an African-American for president. This gentleman, obviously, was not aware of the long history of co-existence and cooperation of Latinos and Africans throughout the United States and Latin America.
