Ethnic centers provide help for first-generation students

Editor, I am writing as a very concerned student regarding some of the proposed Legislative budget cuts being proposed for the upcoming fiscal year. Some of the programs slated to have their budgets slashed have been ones that have supported and enabled me to continue my education at UNM, and others have done the same for countless other students.

Students of color will suffer from proposed budget cuts

Editor, On Friday, I learned that many of the campus programs serving students of color have been recommended for cuts or elimination by the state's Legislative Finance Committee. Last year, more than 100 UNM "special projects" received more than $18 million directly from the Legislature.

The burning question at the Smoke Free Environment Committee's open forums this week was whether designated smoking corridors will be set up across campus. Pug Burge, co-chairwoman of the committee, said she has received positive feedback from the UNM community on the corridor proposition.

Groups jockey for share of funds

Many campus groups fearing a loss of state funding redoubled their efforts to claim part of the estimated $8 million the Student Fee Review Board can distribute as it sees fit. At forums Monday and Tuesday in the SUB, representatives from African-American Student Services, American Indian Student Services, El Centro de la Raza, the Office of International Program Support, PIRG, the Student Health and Counseling Center, and the UNM Children's Campus argued about why they deserved a part of the more than $500 each UNM student pays in student fees.

'Deferred compensation' makes president's promises worthless

Editor, Did everyone read President David Schmidly's e-mail that was sent Monday? No? Well, I don't blame you. It's hard to take anything he says seriously, especially if you witnessed his red-faced antics at the economic forum he hosted for students, staff and faculty last month.

Lobos overwhelm CSU despite strong Ram effort

Colorado State was like glass at The Pit - Plexiglas. The Rams didn't bend or break easily, even though the UNM men's basketball team (13-8 overall, 4-2 in the MWC) ultimately earned a 68-50 victory. The key word here would be earned. Rams head coach Tim Miles made sure of it.

Atrocious claims about voters don't hold up against the facts

Editor, I'm responding to the letter written by Marie Therese Hall in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday concerning the state of elections in this country and to the other claims made in her article. As someone who voted for Barack Obama for president and Tom Udall for Senate as well as being an undergraduate studying political science, I'm quite insulted by Hall's apparent assertion that the only reason that former Rep.

Abortion in the United States, by definition, is not murder

Editor, I fully support UNM student Andres Saenz's assertions about the Bible in his Jan. 23 letter in the Daily Lobo. The Bible is reliable in every particular way and is the best-authenticated book from antiquity. Saenz errs in saying that any abortion performed after the fifth week of pregnancy is "definitely murder.

Steve Alford's Lobos will face Colorado State at The Pit on Wednesday. Alford said the Lobos can't underestimate the Rams, even though CSU went 0-16 in conference play last season.

Rams to bring revamped team to Pit

Colorado State's men's basketball team, at 7-25 overall and 0-16 in the Mountain West Conference, was the laughingstock of the MWC last season. "It was a relief it was over," CSU's head coach Tim Miles said. "It was a perfect storm of things going wrong when I took the job.

Column: Introducing the all-pro, All-Tomari Team

The end of the NFL season is always a depressing time for football fans, especially me, considering I gave myself a Christmas gift in the form of DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket in September. You know, that program that allows you to watch every NFL game on every Sunday during the season.
