After a close loss to LSU last week, the No. 49 UNM women's tennis team rebounded to defeat No. 43 South Florida 4-3 on Saturday at the UNM Tennis Complex. "We knew coming in that this was an important match for us," head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. "We had the home-field advantage because of our high altitude and really believed that we could capitalize on the opportunity.

UNMPD should keep students safe, not violate their rights

Editor, I would like to comment on the article in Thursday's Daily Lobo concerning the Kevin Boyar case. The reason the UNM Police Department is disappointed with the rulings of various motions in this case is because it makes the department look bad. UNMPD screwed up, and now it wants to justify its sloppy actions in the name of student safety.

Locksley rounds out coaching staff with mix of young, old

Change hit the UNM football team like a tidal wave in the form of a new coach after the Lobos went 4-8. Now, head coach Mike Locksley has finalized his coaching staff. And, including Locksley, "Ocean's Eleven" it is. Locksley announced his 10 hires in a news conference Friday at the Tow Diehm Athletics Center - and much like the cast of the movie, there is a collection of youth meshed with a pedigree of experience.

Column: View from the bottom

The following is a more honest rendition of President David Schmidly's Monday Morning Message. Good morning. I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend and is as excited as I am about the new semester. In these hard economic times, all of us will have to tighten our belts, but remember, we are a family at UNM, and when sacrifices need to be made, we in the administration will take the lead in making them.

UNM guard boxes out the critics

Scouting reports were rendered useless on Sunday at The Pit when the UNM women's basketball team beat TCU 75-63. Georonika Jackson appeared to be a weak link, according to TCU head coach Jeff Mittie. But Jackson made the Horned Frogs look foolish. On Sunday, she dictated the game.

Wednesday was an unusual day for Newsland Bookstore. It was busy. In the early hours, people swept in and out of the newsstand at 2112 Central Ave. Some bought six or seven copies of the New York Times. Others grabbed a Wall Street Journal and a USA Today.

Archaeological evidence proves the Bible is a reliable source

Editor, I was outraged and offended to read that Brandon Curtis referred to the Holy Bible as a mere book of mythology in an attempt to single-handedly dismiss the arguments against abortion and gay marriage. It reflects a total disrespect toward anyone who disagrees with his ill-conceived notions about abortion or marriage.

UNM faculty, staff work hard while VPs get the bonuses

Editor, Thanks to the Jan. 14 edition of the Albuquerque Journal regarding David Harris' "bonus" and deferred compensation payments, now it's all very clear where the money is going that has been "harvested" from the departments. Faculty and staff don't get bonuses, and we don't get car allowances.

New Mexico Tech lost more than $200,000 to cyber-theft, the school discovered over the holiday break. In the spring semester last year, thieves hacked into banking accounts at Tech and routed $204,000 to a private account before it was automatically bounced to an offshore account.

Students deserve a functioning, productive financial aid office

Editor, It is time UNM students stand up, unite and demand that the University do better. We pay good money for second-rate services, and it is time that we say, "No more." UNM could do better in many areas, but the one we need to address today is the Student Financial Aid Office.

Amy Beggin navigates out of a trap by San Diego State on Wednesday at The Pit. Beggin logged her fifth 40-minute game of the season. Head coach Don Flanagan said the Lobos need somebody to "step up" and take some pressure off the point guard

Beggin works overtime to keep Lobos in game

Nobody likes to audition to have their damning ghosts exposed in the public sphere any day - let alone every day. But every game the UNM women's basketball team plays is an audition. And here's what the Lobos put on exhibition on Wednesday against San Diego State: With the Lobos down 56-52, Amy Beggin whittled her way into the lane and drew a foul.

Lobos look to leadership, fresh talent

The UNM men's tennis team has big shoes to fill in 2009. Last year, the Lobos finished with a spring record of 20-9 - the most wins for the program in 20 years - and a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season title. Entering this season, the Lobos are ranked 42nd in preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls.

Divers aim for mind- over-water mentality

Swimming and diving is much like mythology. Half the events that comprise the sport - especially diving - seem unimaginably impossible, almost dream-like. Seeing them executed to precision is even more baffling. Divers must be as eloquent as a swan but have the grit and fearlessness of a great white shark.
