Undergrads at disadvantage without access to cadavers

Editor, Change is coming to UNM. The anatomy and physiology laboratories may no longer have access to human cadavers for the purpose of learning human anatomy. The general assumption is this spring may be the last semester UNM undergraduates will have access to cadavers.

Working hard doesn't always pave the way for success

Editor, When I read Paul Rumrill's analogy of Sen. Barack Obama's economic plan in Monday's Opinion section, I was insulted. Rumrill attempts to compare Obama's plan with students in a school, and he essentially compares the upper monetary class to "very good students" who "go to class every day" and "study every night," earning themselves As.

Column: Obama will bring change, peace

Hurricane Katrina, habeas corpus, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, the Iraq War, the Wall Street fall and the collapse of the real estate market, domestic wiretapping, torture, al-Qaida resurgent in Afghanistan and Pakistan, global warming and the Kyoto Protocol, loss of respect for America worldwide, a widening gap between the rich and the poor - what does the past eight years mean to you? How does it make you feel? These are the questions I asked myself when joining the College Democrats and the campaign to elect Sen.

Column: Democratic win will hurt economy

This summer, an enormous quantity of unmarketable mortgage?backed securities precipitated bank failures, a stock market collapse and "required" a gigantic government rescue. The Democratic Party largely caused this financial crisis. Should the Democratic Party prove ascendant on Election Day, the damage it has done to the economy could well be replicated in energy supply, health care, civil liberties and national security.

Obama will unite Americans, help overcome differences

Editor, There has been a constant stream of letters, comments and editorials about what is wrong with each candidate and why one or the other will lead the country down the road to ruin. The truth is we are already a fair ways down that road. For many years we have been blaming the other guys (Republicans, Democrats, socialists, liberals, capitalists, imperialists, evangelicals, atheists, gays or anyone else not like us) for our problems with the seeming assumption that recognition of that truth will somehow make it better.

McCain's experience, character exactly what country needs

Editor, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made a very candid point at a John McCain rally in Ohio. He said McCain spent more time as a prisoner of war than Barack Obama has spent in the U.S. Senate. Schwarzenegger made this point to highlight McCain's unique experiences and long preparation to be president of the U.

Obama's tax plan will cost middle class no matter what

Editor, Sen. Barack Obama is a very good speaker. He incites the imagination and paints a picture of euphoria. In all fairness, I would like to paint a picture of reality as it relates to Obama's economic plan. I am going to compare his economic plan to school and grades.

McCain's multiple failings make Obama better choice

Editor, These are six reasons why Americans should elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden: 1. It's about the party. Just as a soldier fights for his flag or a sports fan roots for his team, Obama leads the Democratic agenda and McCain leads the Republican agenda.

Race, ethnicity will not stop Obama from warmongering

Editor, When John Edwards, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were asked at the end of the Democratic presidential debate at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina on Jan. 21 (this year's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday) whom King would endorse, Obama had the honesty to admit "I don't think Dr.

Don't let mistakes in election process take away your vote

Editor, You must vote, because my vote will probably not count. Despite having applied for an absentee ballot months in advance, my county clerk made an error, which could very well keep me from returning my ballot on time for tally. My vote will probably not count, so I implore you to not only vote but to make sure your vote counts.

Obama's rallies and rhetoric cloud students' judgment

Editor, The election process in the United States has become nothing more than a popularity contest. Barack Obama's Hollywood personality and rallying speeches seem to be clouding the judgment of many college students at this campus. Even hinting that Obama is qualified and experienced enough is not only wrong; it's ignorant.

Voting out of fear a mistake that shouldn't happen again

Editor, In the fall of 1964, at the age of 24, I voted in my first U.S. presidential election. I voted for Lyndon B. Johnson. It was a mistake. Johnson was an OK president, but he wasn't the president for the times. This was proven by his inability to stand up for the many decisions he made regarding the Southeast Asia war and his inability to stand up as the protector of the U.

Student Services move doesn't support sustainability at UNM

Editor, On July 7, President David Schmidly sent out his "Monday morning message" regarding "some major initiatives" in response to rising energy costs and the potential adverse effects on the students and staff of UNM. He spoke of improving the efficiency of transportation to UNM, specifically "streamlined bus service and expanded use of the Rail Runner.

Schmidly a complete failure in improving UNM's standing

Editor, In the past couple months, we've seen articles in the Daily Lobo outlining reduced faculty numbers in chemistry and mathematics, the administration's reallocation of $50,000 from the Daily Lobo and, several months ago, the outlining of how much administrator salaries have increased in just the past few years, followed by how the budget was mishandled earlier this year, causing money allocated for certain academic department operating funds to be put elsewhere.

Student activism integral to checking cronyism, corruption

Editor, Events in recent weeks underscore how crucial student involvement and activism are in maintaining the integrity of our public University. First, $150,000 went missing from the coffers of student organizations. The money was returned only when administrators got caught with their pants down, and the Daily Lobo admirably reported on the situation.

Palin capable of handling national security matters

Editor, Sen. John McCain is an experienced senator, a maverick who has crossed the aisle to get legislation through, a known opponent of pork-barrel spending, supports campaign finance reform and loves this country and will protect it from hostile forces. Terrorists know better than to test him.
