Congress should tax wealthy to fix Wall Street's mistakes

Editor, Former Republican presidential nominee Mike Huckabee made an interesting analogy about Wall Street: He called it "Las Vegas East" and said the only difference is there's nobody to bail out a Vegas gambler, but the federal government now has to bail out Wall Street gamblers.

Bailout will only postpone real solution to economic crisis

Editor, In previous letters, I've expressed my concern for our highly leveraged economy. The current situation has underscored my reasoning. As I have struggled to understand how things got this way, it makes me simply want to hug my kids and say, "I'm sorry.

Don't judge based on race; vote with an open mind

Editor, I discovered years ago that we all carry some degree of prejudice within us. We all have something inside we don't want to face. Let's consider skin tones. Somewhere along the way, the color of skin became a social construct, and the light-skinned people decided they were somehow better than darker-skinned people.

iTunes cards not meant to be a reward for registering to vote

Editor, In a Daily Lobo article about College Democrats' distribution of iTunes cards published Sept. 29, I was quoted saying "All the student has to do is register to vote to activate the card." This statement was inaccurate. I, in no way, meant to suggest that anyone will be rewarded or given incentive to register to vote as the article seems to suggest and apologize for my misstatement.

Reproductive rights letter full of fictions, hysterical lies

Editor, Lynn R. Chong writes great fantasy in her letter claiming a McCain-Palin administration would end abortion. She said her father attended Columbia University Medical School with Margaret Sanger's son, Grant. The New York Times said Grant graduated from Cornell Medical School in Ithaca, N.

Study groups in libraries should not distract others

Editor, I am sick and tired of people wandering into the main reading room of Zimmerman Library for group study sessions, or worse, sitting and carrying out meaningless banter while I try to study or write. What is the first thing any elementary school student learns when she first enters a library? Libraries are quiet places.

Part-time faculty in math have experience, competence

Editor, In the Sept. 23 article "Faculty losses trouble math department," Jens Lorenz, interim chair of the math department claims, "Graduate students and part-timers know the material, but they don't have the broad experience." I believe if you add the years of teaching experience of the part-time instructors in the math department, they would far outnumber the years of experience of our full-time faculty.

Former Republican chair has distorted view of Hispanics

Editor, With regard to the recent controversy over Fernando C de Baca's racist comments on Hispanics not supporting an African-American person for president, it is obvious that C de Baca considers himself a white Hispanic and appears to be making the assumption that all Hispanics in New Mexico are white as well.

Udall will work for NM, the country

Before I explain why I think you should vote for Rep. Tom Udall for Senate in November, I would like to dispel a couple myths about voting. Myth: It doesn't matter whom you vote for, as long as you vote. Truth: It matters very much whom you vote for. Different candidates will do vastly different things when they are in office, and those things obviously matter.

Palin should clarify stance on abortion for voters' sakes

Editor, As Sen. John McCain and his vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, travel around the country, we're watching as they try to sell the McCain-Palin ticket to moderate, independent-leaning women voters who will determine the outcome of this election.

Correction

In Nick Christian's letter on Sept. 29, "Loyalty, unity necessary for success of UNM sports programs," the first reference to "paid support staff" should say "non-paid support staff."

Pundits should question Palin's strengths, not weaknesses

Editor, I am a Barack Obama supporter. I have read several letters in the Daily Lobo about Sarah Palin and agree with many of the points that have been made. Yet, there are some mistakes pundits and Democrats make when criticizing her. What I believe is a poor argument of criticizing Palin is the issue of foreign policy experience.

Loving 'freedom and family' doesn't mean aborting fetuses

Editor, "Those of us who love freedom and family must continue to fight for reproductive rights." Since when did love of the family include elimination of its youngest member? The opinion that abortion is a woman's right has changed dramatically in recent years since science via ultrasounds has proven what conservatives have known all along.

Palin's experience makes her qualified to be vice president

Editor, I want to give a brief response to Jason Darensburg's outrageously ignorant letter about Sarah Palin. He viciously calls her a woman who hates women and loves war, but how can Palin be a misogynist if she's a member of Feminists for Life of America, which is America's largest pro-life feminist organization? The organization describes itself as shaped by the core feminist values of justice, nondiscrimination and nonviolence.

Biden has the experience, wisdom to lead country

Ever since the decision was made to allow the presidential nominee to pick a running mate, it has been a point of strategy to decide who would best fill out each party's ticket. With the politics of running mates and every other detail of a campaign under great scrutiny, it is more important than ever to make every detail perfect.
