Allowing firearms on campus will do more harm than good

Editor, I was disturbed to read Jean Aragon's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo. I sincerely hope New Mexico's concealed-carry training doesn't include the notion that being licensed includes the right to carry concealed weapons everywhere but UNM, as Aragon says.

Vote for a candidate who will part ways with Bush's policies

Editor, This is in response to the Aug. 17 letter written by UNM student Andres Saenz on the election. I urge all Americans to see beyond what the mass media and political ads say of either candidate. Instead, take a deeper look into what each candidate has to offer.

Take time to fact-check before spreading lies about Obama

Editor, It's a shame we have to read nonsense in the Daily Lobo letters like "Even for faithful Democrats, Obama is the wrong choice" on Monday. That is as silly as the lies being spread in e-mails written by right-wing smear merchants about Sen. Barack Obama.

View from the bottom

Having already spent almost $1 million in the past year, President Schmidly intends to spend another $4 million this year on improving the University's image. How perfectly American: Image triumphs over substance again. Rather than focusing resources on making UNM a better institution, the plan is to make it appear to be a better institution.

UNM chant is ridiculous; Lobos don't bark, they howl

Editor, I just moved here and am becoming familiar with the local teams. I have looked into the Lobos, and I am disgusted with a certain slogan. What is the deal with "Everyone's a Lobo! Woof! Woof! Woof!"? Last I recall, Lobos howl. They don't bark like our pet dogs.

Criticism of Obama makes untrue, unsupported claims

Editor, I'm writing in response to Daniel Martinez's bizarre claim that loyal Democrats should not vote for Barack Obama for president because of various assaults on Obama's character and that the Democratic nomination was "stolen" for him by the Democratic National Committee.

Concealed weapons should be allowed on UNM campus

Editor, On the news this morning, I heard another woman was attacked on the UNM campus. This time the attacker was a homeless man, most likely drunk. A shiver went down my spine, because I was approached by three large, seemingly homeless men on Thursday. One said in an aggressive manner, "Hey, how 'bout a little bed and breakfast?" as he lurched toward me.

Re-branding UNM image not a solution to education issues

Editor, It seems out of place for UNM to be spending $4 million on a new set of fancy clothes to create a new image when no one is addressing the real problems that need to be solved. That money could easily raise the salaries of the staff and part-time faculty.

The Setonian
Opinion

Even for faithful Democrats, Obama is the wrong choice

Editor, I am one someone many call "a bitter Hillary Clinton supporter for John McCain." But I'm voting for McCain for the reasons stated below and for no other reason. As a decorated prisoner of war and Vietnam veteran, McCain has earned his stripes, and he is not so far off the "maverick" issues that he won't do everything he can to give the American people the best possible straight face on the issues facing the country.

The Setonian
Opinion

Not voting for Obama increases McCain's odds

Editor, I'm all for the point of view of several Independent groups, including the LP and the Greens, but in the presidential race, if John McCain is not your first choice, then a vote for any candidate other than Barack Obama only increases the odds that McCain will win.

The Setonian
Opinion

Obama not the prototypical messiah America needs

Editor, No politician has a flawless diplomatic record, but I'm inclined to vote for John McCain for several reasons. On May 18, Sen. Barack Obama ignorantly claimed nations such as Iran, Cuba and Venezuela do not pose a threat to America because they are geographically small in comparison to Russia.

The Setonian
Opinion

Democrats, Independents must unite to elect Obama

Editor, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are almost fully aligned on critical issues and are both diametrically opposed to John McCain's views, which mirror those of our current administration. If passionate backers of Clinton stay home on Election Day or, worse yet, vote for McCain, they are endorsing a third term for President Bush.

Shabby Coronado facilities reflect poorly on University

Editor, I am a '93 and '96 UNM graduate who lived in Hokona Hall in 1988 and 1989. I currently work for a company that holds a camp every summer at UNM for junior high and high school students. We have several staff members and participants who travel from out of state to attend.

Committee rules made uranium issue one-sided

Editor, As a member of a community that has been adversely affected by uranium mill tailings and a citizen of New Mexico, I recently attended a meeting of the Legislative Finance Committee on July 10 in Chama, N.M. Along with members of Navajo, Laguna and Acoma communities, Post 71 committee members and others affected by uranium mining in New Mexico, we traveled long distances for a chance to say a few words to the committee.

Schmidly should consult market before raising pay

Editor, Please, President David Schmidly, no more Web conferences and weekly e-mails. They are nice and all, but they don't help me pay the bills. Instead, talk to your good friend, the market, on behalf of the University's staff, and ask him to give us more than a 2 percent raise.
