Editor, For decades, Sandia and Los Alamos laboratories have prepared to commit mass murders worldwide, thousands of times larger than the atrocities on Sept. 11, 2001. The nuclear weapons designed at Sandia and Los Alamos terrorize many whole nations. U.
Editor, On Tuesday, a resolution was introduced in the New Mexico Legislature calling for the impeachment of both President Bush and Vice President Cheney. I saw no mention of it in the Daily Lobo or elsewhere. I went to the press conference for its introduction at the Capitol in Santa Fe, and there was very strong public support for the resolution.
Editor, We have five finalists for our presidential position. Shortly after Valentine's Day, the regents will decide on who gets the position. This is a huge decision. No one person is pegged for the job. For the next five to 10 years or more, the regents' choice will guide us and represent us not only to the local community, but far beyond.
Editor, Since the U.S. Supreme Court's Kelo v. City of New London decision last year, citizens across the nation have declared, in no uncertain terms, their support for private property rights and opposition to the use of eminent domain for private gain. Eminent domain is the power of the government to take private property against the owner's wishes.
Editor, The candidates have been narrowed down to five, and now it's the students' turn to meet the finalists for UNM president. In the upcoming weeks, each of the five finalists will be visiting the University and meeting with various groups on campus, including students.
While a few fringy folks continue to deny the existence of, or human role in, climate change, the issue has been gradually advancing in public consciousness - no thanks to our media and political apparatus, which continue to grossly misrepresent it.
Editor, State of New Mexico law requires that the UNM regents' final decision concerning the selection of our 20th president take place at least 21 days, but no more than 30 days, after providing public notice of the names of the five finalists who were announced Wednesday.
Editor, After reading the CD reviews in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth. How does a 10-year veteran in the rap game, Styles P, also known as SP the Ghost, get a lower review on his CD than some no-name local artist? Styles P is nationally known in the hip-hop world - who is Jigzaw? The author of these reviews clearly does not know her hip-hop and clearly did not listen to Time Is Money, Styles P's CD.
Editor, Selective perception clouded columnist Scott Darnell's vision when he described Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, as gutsy Wednesday. Gutsy is not a person who walked with President Bush into a disaster; gutsy is not a person who was adamantly against torture but caved when it was politically expedient; gutsy is not a person who hugs a man that spread lies in South Carolina during the 2000 Republican primary; and gutsy is not a man that will do and say anything to gain the Republican presidential nomination.
Editor, I recently came across several articles from various sources decrying this generation's obsession with material wealth, physical looks and having the latest gadgets above all else. New polls show that the obsession with material things among our nation's youth is growing and that being rich is more important to today's young people than it was in the past.
Editor, President Bush used 46 percent of his State of the Union address to explain the epic struggle our nation faces: We are forced to fight Islamic terrorists and their fascist ideology. He tells us they want to destroy Western civilization, and if they are not challenged, he believes they have the potential to succeed.
Editor, In response to the editorial in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, I would like to emphasize a few key issues. It is important to remember that many nonprofit organizations, of which the University is one, run like businesses but with specific civic or philanthropic goals.
Scott Darnell will be writing a series of columns pertaining to the political power players in the world, the United States and New Mexico today. His column will focus on the decisions they make. It's a triple dose in this column, as he tackles the good, the bad and the gutsy moves of Sen. Barack Obama, New Mexico Speaker Ben Lujan and Sen. John McCain.
Editor, I spend a lot of my time in the Lobo Lair of the SUB. The only people that spend more time there than my friends and I are the students working with NMPIRG. Every day, they have meetings with people from all over campus. They carry their table and banner out to go to talk to UNM students about important issues that they are working on, and they don't leave their office until 9 or 10 p.
As the University searches for a president and a replacement for regent Sandra Begay-Campbell, we should be thinking about what is best for the future of UNM and who will take us there. Running the University as if it were a business seems to be the regents' top priority.
Editor, It is becoming increasingly likely that some form of breakup will occur to the nation-state of Iraq. The breakup will reflect the relationships among Iraq's Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish groups, and the relationships of these groups to the central government - which in turn have consequences on the region.
Editor, I'm writing in response to the Daily Lobo article on Monday, "Students aim to start campus PIRG chapter." It seems to me that an organization that registers students to vote, helps inform them and then gets them out to the polls on Election Day is helping UNM students become responsible citizens.
Editor, I am writing in regard to the article about UNM's image on the front page of Friday's Daily Lobo. After several straight years of unruly tuition increases and the loss of printed course catalogs, I learned that the University is spending its money on a brand consulting firm.
