Students should question pot-smoking classmate

Editor, Last week before class, a classmate approached me smoking marijuana rolled with tobacco in cigarette form. Once in class, the student announced that the Military Commissions Act of 2006 literally removed the Bill of Rights from the U.S. Constitution, with the exception of the Third Amendment.

Slate has unrealistic ideas, gives no credit to ASUNM

Editor, As the national midterm elections are now over, it is time for UNM students to look toward the ASUNM midterm elections, which will have a direct effect on each of us. I have been an ASUNM senator for an entire year now, as I was elected in November 2005.

Voting experience scary after seeing documentary

Editor, Viewing Bev Harris' HBO documentary "Hacking Democracy" recently confirmed my worst fears - that a truly fair election where all votes are counted is not possible in the U.S. We are disenfranchised, and this is a dangerous precedent to set in our country.

Thanks to voters for taking self-interest to the polls

Editor, After this ugly campaign season, I wish to thank all those people who took the time to participate in the democratic process. They realized that besides the choice between Attorney General Patricia Madrid and Rep. Heather Wilson, there were more than 50 other items on the ballot that required public input.

Affirmative action bad way to gain diverse faculty

Editor, This is in response to Caleb Fort's article in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. First, I agree with the statement that white professors outweigh professors of different ethnicities. I do not see this as a positive or negative thing, though - it is just the way things are.

Honor veterans, troops on the upcoming holiday

Editor, This Saturday is Veterans Day. It's our chance to pay tribute to the men and women who served and are serving our country. Take time to remember those who gave up part or all of their lives to serve freedom, whether domestic or abroad, peacetime or wartime.

Lack of religion, morality cause of America's decay

Editor, Has anyone noticed a hasty trend in our downward-spiraling society? Has anyone seen the lustful smirk of noonday thieves as they chisel away the fibers of our freedom? Has anyone wondered why moral decency has been alarmingly eroded from our society's foundation? We are fed up with our nation's favored pillars of avarice, lust and other self-indulgent practices.

Madrid, Wilson are not fit to represent young voters

Editor, Tuesday was Election Day. I considered voting by absentee ballot or driving down to my district so I could vote, but in my view, there is no candidate good enough to choose. I have been following the Wilson and Madrid race going on in this district, and while it would not be affected by my vote, if the choice were given to me, I do not think I would want either of them to represent me.

Since UNM is drug-free, it should be smoke-free

Editor, I was a student at the Gallup branch of UNM. However, I still read the Daily Lobo. I just want to say that I think the Albuquerque campus should be smoke-free. I am not a smoker, and the smell of secondhand smoke is really annoying. UNM should not just be a drug-free campus, but smoke-free as well, for the good of all the students.

Role models are plentiful among diverse teachers

Editor, I completely disagreed with the article in Tuesday's Daily Lobo about minority enrollment and UNM's faculty. Does the UNM Fact Book include the faculty of the mathematics and statistics department? Does it include the faculty of the foreign languages and literatures department? If not, then maybe it needs to be revised and edited to include all these faculty members.

Slate wants to lower tuition if it gets elected to ASUNM

Editor, ASUNM exists to represent the concerns of the people that this University was built to serve - the students. One of ASUNM's promises has always been to lower tuition, yet every year tuition still goes up. The people running ASUNM are not doing nearly enough to stop that from happening, so I've decided to run for ASUNM myself.

Wilson was good for NM, but she's failed us on Iraq

Editor, Republican incumbent Rep. Heather Wilson has served New Mexico well, with a very distinguished career in the U.S. military and U.S. government. Wilson was the first female military veteran to serve in the U.S. Congress. Wilson is smart and hardworking.

Letter: Decision to join military something to be proud of

Editor, I have no issue with the majority of Daniel Martinez's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo. He is free to disagree with the Iraq war and President Bush. However, I have a huge problem with Martinez referring to military personnel as "gullible suckers" who chose to bypass a legitimate education and were baited by ridiculous bonuses.

Letter: Americans must accept how sick the country is

Editor, America is No. 1. Actually, it's No. 48, 72, 44 and 55 in the world in infant mortality rates, overall health, freedom of the press and literacy, respectively. Due to widespread suspicion of voter fraud, more than 7,000 lawyers have been mobilized for the 2006 elections, and our election process is now subject to global scrutiny.

Editorial: Damning evidence screams for change in ballot format

When you go into that little cubicle Tuesday, lick the tip of your Bic pen, and hunker down in one of those yellow or orange plastic chairs to vote, you'll see that Democrats are listed first in every race on the ballot, no matter the precinct. That's not fair, and according to an editorial in Saturday's New York Times by Stanford professor Jon Krosnick, it's a problem that is easily remedied.

Letter: Justice For All relies on support from community

Editor, I am writing to respond to James Burbank's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo. I am interested in knowing the source of his information about Justice For All. An article published in August on the Justice For All Web site appears to contradict some of the key points Burbank put forth.

Wealthy backers fund Justice For All's free speech

Editor, How would a campus organization, Justice For All, have the incredible resources and the megabucks to put up two-story panels full of disinformation in an attempt to persuade us of its point of view? People on campus should know that Justice For All is based in Wichita, Kan.
