Letter: Public not responsible for elected leaders' actions

Editor, I write to respond to some hasty comments by Tylor Nelson in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. Certainly people blaming "someone else for their actions" is both common and base, yet Nelson immediately contradicts himself and compounds his mistake by making personal attacks in his argument.

Letter: Review shows disconnect from youth, technology

Editor, John Bear comes off like a whining fool in his article on the iPod jacket in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. After wasting the first column of his article talking about how hard it was to get the jacket to work - the only part of the article that was actually relevant, by the way - he proceeds to waste the second column of his article denigrating technology and its rapid advancement.

Letter: Mass media not covering positive changes in Iraq

Editor, This is in response to Colin Donoghue's column in Monday's Daily Lobo, "Mass media fails public," that claims that the media is, for the most part, right wing and biased. I have trouble seeing it that way at all. While there are plenty of right-wing political commentators and conservative-owned media groups, it seems to me that, if anything, the news that seems fit to share with the hungry public is anything but.

Letter: Responsible citizens have right, duty to dissent

Editor, In response to Tylor Nelson's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo: Technically, the framers made sure the people weren't responsible for electing the executive. That's why we have the Electoral College - people like us clearly can't make the right decision.

Column: Thankful for sacred places

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist Thanksgiving should be a celebration we have every day, not just a one-day acknowledgment of our blessings and privileges. This past weekend, hundreds of people marched to pay their homage to Petroglyph National Monument west of Albuquerque.

Letter: Free speech censored by left-biased media

Editor, The column in Monday's Daily Lobo by Colin Donoghue, "Mass media fails public," places accusations of censorship on the right which are not entirely accurate. Anyone who believes the left has no voice need only look at this very paper to realize that this is false.

Letter: Victim's family thanks group for its kind gesture

Editor, I would like to express my family's sincere appreciation to the UNM freshman class called Making a Difference, college dean Peter White, Glenda Balas and others who helped in the planning and planting of the "truth Cedar" for the five victims John Hyde is charged with killing.

Letter: Education system soured after morality removed

Editor, This is in response to the letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo written by Mark Justice Hinton, "Public education crucial to free circulation of ideas." Would you rather go to Smith's Food & Drug, Whole Foods Market, Albertson's, Raley's, or to the Motor Vehicle Department, the Social Security office, or Medicaid office? That would be the difference between government schools - the disaster they are now - and voucher schools.

Letter: English TA angry after class time stolen by PIRG

Editor, I'm a teaching assistant in the English department at UNM. I've been warned about the problems I could encounter while teaching English 101, but I was neither warned of nor had I anticipated an incident that took place in my classroom on the morning of last Friday.

Letter: Calling Bush a terrorist means we're all terrorists

Editor, I read a letter in Friday's Daily Lobo titled "U.S. terrorism not covered by mainstream media" that accused the armed forces of being "a terrorist organization commanded by the world's No. 1 terrorist, George Bush." I am often shocked by a person's willingness to shirk all responsibility and blame someone else for their actions.

Column: Chewing the holiday fat

by Samara Alpern Daily Lobo columnist Like a truck with no brakes barreling down Raton Pass, the holiday season is fast approaching. It's the time of year when dietitians are probably the least popular. Vicky Mares, a dietitian at Sandia Labs, says, "My office is pretty quiet this time of year.

Letter: GOP's attack on war critics suggests a hidden agenda

Editor, I am writing concerning the Republican Party's fantastic effort to make the invasion of Iraq a nonissue. Republican officials are dismissing claims that they misled America before the invasion as unfounded. It seems to me the conservatives are telling us not to question or debate the war in Iraq.

Letter: Nursing school discriminates against out-of-state students

Editor, Discrimination can take many different forms, but there is no question every form is damaging - especially when a public university is perpetrating it. I am amazed at the level of incompetence in the administration of UNM's nursing program and the lack of oversight by UNM's administrators.

Letter: Arafat funded terrorism, thwarted peace process

Editor, I am writing in response to the letter by Shafeek Kubha, "Arafat's peace-keeping endeavors overlooked," in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. It is hard for me to comprehend the use of words such as "freedom fighter, a liberator and a man of integrity" to describe a man such as Yasser Arafat.

Letter: Be careful what you say to those eager to be offended

Editor, Regarding F. Michelle Touson and her comments in Tuesday's Daily Lobo about Air Force Academy football coach Fisher DeBerry's compliments concerning the running abilities of African-Americans: I advise everyone of either gender not to tell her that she is pretty.

Letter: U.S. terrorism not covered by mainstream media

Editor, If 67 percent of Daily Lobo readers believe the commander in chief of the United States armed forces lied to start a war, according to the poll on the Lobo's Web site, I hope they have the courage to stand up and do something about it. For over a week, I have been following the reports that U.

Letter: Politicians, not oil CEOs to blame for gas prices

Editor, Once again, politicians are denouncing oil companies for their record profits and accusing them of gouging consumers. Lost in the general outcry is the fact that oil companies made their profits by productive work. They didn't just happen to be at the right place at the right time.

Letter: Letter on coach's remarks

Editor, The infamous remarks of Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry are obviously stereotypical and not based on fact. However, in her delayed reaction to his comments, F. Michelle Touson revealed some personal stereotypes that are equally unacceptable.
