Letter: CIRT promised to lift ban; still no access to Facebook

Editor, I was just wondering when CIRT was planning on unblocking the Facebook Web site from UNM computers. Facebook connects people through social networks at schools and is a great communication device for college students. When CIRT initially blocked Facebook a few months ago, they said it was temporary.

Letter: It's politically incorrect to keep religious holidays

Editor, Following the rash of recent news reports about zealous actions to completely separate Christmas from anything funded with tax dollars, I think the time has come for us to insist that the people who advocate radically secular positions have the courage of their convictions, and follow them to their logical conclusion.

Letter: Parking services should encourage motorcycle use

Editor, Christina Conticelli is correct about UNM's parking problems in her letter in Monday's Daily Lobo. We all know it would take cars off campus if the use of motorcycles was encouraged. But what does parking services do? It charges us $49, at my last inquiry, to register to park a motorcycle on campus to avoid a ticket.

Letter: Don't let urban sprawl take over Albuquerque

Editor, I am somewhat safe here in the University area, pretty well impervious to the shoddy construction of subdivisions. The houses here are old and beautiful, each one unique. What are we doing here in Albuquerque, turning this place into another Phoenix? Have you seen the sprawl there? The East Coast is pretty much paved over.

Letter: Students should support peers' performances

Editor, I am a visiting scholar to UNM. When I came to the campus at noon last Monday, I was surprised to find that it was the second annual UNM Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium. I happened to watch a few performances, such as "Astor Piazzolla and Le Grand Tango Performance Viola and Piano Duo," and the dancing of "Trio, Jessica Trembly.

Letter: Liberals have fought to end workplace discrimination

Editor, Regarding the lawsuit against KUNM, I will reserve judgment until all the facts are in, but we liberals invented the concept of a hostile work environment. We made a major point out of working for an end to religious and political discrimination, among other sorts of discrimination.

Letter: Flawed parking regulations punish paying students

Editor, I would like to bring up a flaw with our parking regulations. Why is it that we are required to supply information about the make, model, color and license plate of our vehicles to the Parking and Transportation Services Department in order to get a parking permit, but parking services only uses that information to bill us when we are in violation of a rule? Twice this semester, I have forgotten to put my permit for the Zia Lot out on my dashboard, and both times I have been charged the $15 fine.

Letter: Public not responsible for elected leaders' actions

Editor, I write to respond to some hasty comments by Tylor Nelson in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. Certainly people blaming "someone else for their actions" is both common and base, yet Nelson immediately contradicts himself and compounds his mistake by making personal attacks in his argument.

Letter: Review shows disconnect from youth, technology

Editor, John Bear comes off like a whining fool in his article on the iPod jacket in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. After wasting the first column of his article talking about how hard it was to get the jacket to work - the only part of the article that was actually relevant, by the way - he proceeds to waste the second column of his article denigrating technology and its rapid advancement.

Letter: Mass media not covering positive changes in Iraq

Editor, This is in response to Colin Donoghue's column in Monday's Daily Lobo, "Mass media fails public," that claims that the media is, for the most part, right wing and biased. I have trouble seeing it that way at all. While there are plenty of right-wing political commentators and conservative-owned media groups, it seems to me that, if anything, the news that seems fit to share with the hungry public is anything but.

Letter: Responsible citizens have right, duty to dissent

Editor, In response to Tylor Nelson's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo: Technically, the framers made sure the people weren't responsible for electing the executive. That's why we have the Electoral College - people like us clearly can't make the right decision.

Column: Thankful for sacred places

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist Thanksgiving should be a celebration we have every day, not just a one-day acknowledgment of our blessings and privileges. This past weekend, hundreds of people marched to pay their homage to Petroglyph National Monument west of Albuquerque.

Letter: Free speech censored by left-biased media

Editor, The column in Monday's Daily Lobo by Colin Donoghue, "Mass media fails public," places accusations of censorship on the right which are not entirely accurate. Anyone who believes the left has no voice need only look at this very paper to realize that this is false.

Letter: Victim's family thanks group for its kind gesture

Editor, I would like to express my family's sincere appreciation to the UNM freshman class called Making a Difference, college dean Peter White, Glenda Balas and others who helped in the planning and planting of the "truth Cedar" for the five victims John Hyde is charged with killing.

Letter: Education system soured after morality removed

Editor, This is in response to the letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo written by Mark Justice Hinton, "Public education crucial to free circulation of ideas." Would you rather go to Smith's Food & Drug, Whole Foods Market, Albertson's, Raley's, or to the Motor Vehicle Department, the Social Security office, or Medicaid office? That would be the difference between government schools - the disaster they are now - and voucher schools.

Letter: English TA angry after class time stolen by PIRG

Editor, I'm a teaching assistant in the English department at UNM. I've been warned about the problems I could encounter while teaching English 101, but I was neither warned of nor had I anticipated an incident that took place in my classroom on the morning of last Friday.

Letter: Calling Bush a terrorist means we're all terrorists

Editor, I read a letter in Friday's Daily Lobo titled "U.S. terrorism not covered by mainstream media" that accused the armed forces of being "a terrorist organization commanded by the world's No. 1 terrorist, George Bush." I am often shocked by a person's willingness to shirk all responsibility and blame someone else for their actions.

Column: Chewing the holiday fat

by Samara Alpern Daily Lobo columnist Like a truck with no brakes barreling down Raton Pass, the holiday season is fast approaching. It's the time of year when dietitians are probably the least popular. Vicky Mares, a dietitian at Sandia Labs, says, "My office is pretty quiet this time of year.
