Letter: Students should get to use $100 calculators on final

Editor, I am writing with regard to the decision made by the math department mid-semester to disallow calculators for the final exam for Math 162, given that the purchase of a calculator was required. This is a breach of contract. The syllabus for this course, like all syllabuses, is a written contract between students taking the course and the math department, of whom the instructor is a hired representative.

Letter: Assisted-suicide group commits acts of murder

Editor, This is in response to the article "Assisting people in pain" in Thursday's Daily Lobo. I was extremely bothered when reading this article. Are the people who volunteer at the Final Exit Network not aware of the moral dilemma involved in this act called "self-assisted suicide," also known as euthanasia? I believe that this falls under the category of murder.

Letter: Adam-and-Steve story intriguing, professional

Editor, I recently attended my first play that was put on by the UNM theatre department. In order to accurately describe the profound enlightenment I experienced, I feel I must disclose my political affiliation - I am a Republican. The play was titled "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told," and it is best described as a gay interpretation of the Bible.

Column: Vouching for a solution

by Dane Roberts Daily Lobo columnist For its staying power, there are few controversies in America to match the debate pitting evolution against creationism in public schools. From its legendary beginnings in the 1925 Scopes Trial to the current case in York, Penn.

Letter: The solution to traffic is for West Siders to bike to work

Editor, I'm a bicycle commuter who travels from Old Town to Paradise Hills every school day, and would like to share a few opinions and observations about all the traffic. During the time leading up to the last election, it was amusing to observe the supporters of the various mayoral candidates posturing and competing with one another to catch drivers' attention over the deluge of traffic along Coors Boulevard and Monta§o Road with either the promise of solving the traffic deadlock or the blaming of one another for the area's traffic woes.

Letter: Poverty, policy don't cause terrorism, only legitimate it

Editor, In response to W. Christopher Epler's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, in which he writes, "It's time to talk about causes and effects. It is relatively common knowledge among the nonbrain-dead that terrorism is a symptom, not a cause. And it's not even a complicated symptom.

Letter: UNM wasn't candid about costs of health-care switch

Editor, I feel it prudent to comment on how the University of New Mexico has manipulated its employee health care to the point of redundancy. As a cancer patient, I am required to have outpatient hospital tests four times per year. My doctor, who is on the approved provider list, recently referred me for one of my tests.

Letter: Bush, his supporters ignore Jesus' teachings

Editor, I would like to commend Colin Donoghue's article regarding the policies of the Bush administration and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is about time someone recognized that not all people who hold religion and Jesus close to their hearts are always conservative Republicans.

Letter: Call for peace is naive, ignorant of Middle East

Editor, Of course "Muslims and Americans want to live in peace," as W. Christopher Epler's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo claims. Many Americans are Muslim, by the way. It would behoove Epler to read the Francis Church editorial that he so sophomorically abuses with his "Yes, Virginia, terrorism is a symptom" phrase.

Letter: Senators are hypocrites in cutting costs for war

Editor, I understand that a number of United States senators are willing to give up their annual pay raise in order to do their part to save the government some money in light of the Iraqi reconstruction, Hurricane Katrina and the outlandish budget deficit.

Letter: Headline misleads readers about assisted suicide

Editor, My wife suffers from chronic pain, so when I opened the online article "Assisting people in pain" in the Thursday edition of the Daily Lobo with some anticipation of finding something that would help her - I was actually hoping to send her the article.

Column: Jesus was no Republican

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist Last weekend, I visited Goshen College in Indiana for a National Peace and Justice Conference titled "In Solidarity: Engaging Empire." I gave a presentation on the urgent need for election system reforms, independent media and the creation of Centers for Peace and Justice - just like the one here in Albuquerque - throughout the country.

Letter: Muslims and Americans both want to live in peace

Editor, Yes, Virginia, terrorism is a symptom. It's time to talk about causes and effects. It is relatively common knowledge among the non-brain-dead that terrorism is a symptom, not a cause. And it's not even a complicated symptom. It's simple to see that Middle Eastern hot-houses of terrorism are fertilized with hopelessness and fear.

Column: Parenting for the parents

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist There I am - sitting in the dark, laughing through some silly previews, munching on cholesterol-ridden popcorn, happily filling my arteries with fat and sucking down caffeine-laden soda. Mostly just looking forward to two hours of escape from the daily stress called my life.

Letter: Group leader's costume insensitive to minorities

Editor, I recently attended a meeting for a student club that will remain nameless, at which I was shocked and outraged to witness an act of racial discrimination unbefitting for any place, and especially the state in which we live. At this meeting we were planning a Halloween event for small children when one of the leaders of the organization decided to share with the rest of the group what she would be wearing as a costume.

Letter: N.M.'s nuclear weapons discredit Richardson

Editor, Gov. Bill Richardson's trip to North Korea lacks in credibility. Supposedly, Gov. Richardson is there to advance an agenda of global nuclear nonproliferation by asking North Korea for verification of their nuclear weapons program and the dismantling of their weapons of mass destruction.

Letter: United Way urges UNM to continue generosity

Editor, I wish to respond to the letter on the United Way printed in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. "Because of you, my brothers and I ate this weekend." "Because of you, I escaped from a life of domestic violence." "Because of you, I have the chance to see my son become the man I always knew he could be.

Letter: UNM's call for donations irks underpaid employee

Editor, I am a little perturbed that UNM is asking me to contribute to the United Way, when I still have no idea whether I or others represented by our union will be getting a raise. I am glad to contribute to the United Way, but it's a bit of a slap in the face to be asked to contribute when UNM obviously does not value all of its employees.
